Rituals and ceremonies differ in every region. You have to perform proper rituals of the type of wedding you're having.

Maharashtrians and South Indians don't have that ritual.

For us pheras are very important along with the havan. If sindoor is not applied or mangal sutra not put it's frowned upon but the marriage is not adhura or illegal. As we also do registry.

If only sindoor is applied without any other ritual or no one around - it's invalid as there is no proof or witness and none of the gods have been called to lay witness
