Nope. I love Madhuri but can't imagine her in this role. She has done similar role in movies like prem granth & lajja and did good job. But she doesn't have that innocent look. Madhuri's plus points were her expressive eyes, her boldness because of which she would even outshine her co-stars.

Damini is one of my favourite movies, I have seen it multiple times & it makes me miss Meenakshi. That movie was way ahead of its time. She was very underrated. She was also a classically trained dancer. Sunny's dialogues became very famous but when you watch the full movie it's meenakshi with whom you connect and feel for.

Is it true that Madhuri was SLB's inspiration for most of his female characters? Remember reading it somewhere!

Not really. Barring a couple of films, Madhuri was hardly an actress. She was more a dancer and was known for her sex appeal, and she often mixed both to create an impact.

I think it's wrong that Sunny got majority of the praise for the movie and Meenakshi got sidelined. Her role was much more complex and tough role to act with a range of emotions, Sunnys role was more filmy dramatic. I know Madhuri is considered the best dancers of the 90's, but if Meenakshi was given more films I think she would have tough competition for that title. Just look at her dance in the song Bin Sajan Jhoola Jhulu, super complex moves in each frame. Not only that, but she gave one the best Tandav in Bollywood in this movie.

I used to love Meenakshi Sheshadri back then and found her so beautiful 😍 And she definitely did an amazing job in Daamini. However, honestly speaking another actress like a Madhuri or a Sridevi would have knocked it out of the park! Meenakshi was a decent actress but she wasn’t the best.

As far as I remember, Damini had already being conceptualized and scripted when spat between Minakshi Sheshadri and and RajKumar Santoshi happened . Madhuri Dixit had read the script and approved of it. Menakshi Shesahadri approached an artist body, I think Cine Artist Association or something and complained that RajKumar Santoshi was letting personal things meddle with their professional things. That Association agreed with Minakshi Sheshadri . Minakshi Sheshadri did a wonderful job in Damini in her own way.

Madhuri Dixit would have turned this role into one of the best performances in Bollywood ever.

Premgranth and Damini are quite different roles. Lajja was not a very big role and perhaps Santoshi offered it to Madhuri Dixit as some sort of compensation or our of guilt but even in that short role we see Madhuri's brilliance. Infact Lajja is one of those films where performances by most of the actors are fantastic. I really hope Santoshi and Madhuri Dixit do more films together.
