Yes. Massive cringe vibes. But in this case, I think it could work. I think most narratives around prostitution should give us cringe vibes.

Even in cases where prostitutes have love stories that may appear happy and fulfilling, there is an uneven power dynamic. Gangubhai is able to rise in the ranks and become a powerful madam due to her gangster lover. But the question is - would she have chosen this lover or needed to rise to power?

I remember when Dear Zindagi was first announced, and before any of us knew the concept of the movie, there was a discussion about what exactly was the relationship between a middle aged SRK and a very young looking Alia. One of the speculations was (and for the life of me I don’t remember how we came up with that scenario) if SRK is playing a predator. We were wondering if a mainstream Bollywood movie was willing to go there? Would SRK? And if they did would it be played as real and raw as the reality of predator and victim is or would it somehow become romanticized because it’s Bollywood. Of course once more information became known about the movie it all became a moot point.


Now the story of prostitution isn’t the same as that of a victim of sexual abuse. But sometimes circumstance might overlap. So yes, I totally agree with your point about the dynamics between Ajay’s character and Alia’s. And also as you mentioned Alia’s introduction and rise in the world of prostitution and exploitation. Do I think it will be a nuanced and real? Honestly, I don’t. I think Ajay will be the typical Bollywood gangster with a heart of gold who will rescue Alia.

That’s not true. Padmavati was supposed to be a female led movie. SLB has the habit to write script on the go, but when he pitched the story to her it was supposed to be female led always. He added more khilji scenes. Ask anyone they will tell you Ranveer had to do extra shooting which he wasn’t supposed to. Finally many Deepika and Shahid scenes have been chopped off. Deepika filmed almost a year which was on par with Ranveer but only got 50% of his screen time but whatever floats your boat I guess. Even Shahid had complained on KWK that he was promised more than whatever he got.

PS: don’t want to debate SLB’s way today. Everyone knows how he works. I am glad DP is going her own way, that’s it.

Why Are people complaining about the pairing. The film is about a prostitute, obviously there are gonna be pairings that would make us uncomfortable. 😕

After BM SLB's team announced his next as Khilji there were many articles n news about it n later DP madam herself said in an iv that she demanded slb to give her titular role, or she wouldn't do the movie... U can search it in IF itself..

Movie was always about khilji... N Shahid n DP scenes were edited out I'm sure bcoz of their boring chemistry n snooze fest acting... Nainowake is biggest example..

i never thought of alia and devgan pairing. maybe turn out to be deadly combo. finally SLB comes with a cast to look forward to.

this becomes one of the most awaited movie of 2020!
