Chapter 2
As the day kept passing by, Rishabh started behaving anxiously because of Kukki’s ill health, he couldn’t see his daughter in pain. Prerna was trying her best to reduce her temperature by putting some wet cloth strips on her forehead and feeding her some homemade kadha but Kukki’s fever was not reducing at all, instead she complained about body aches by evening and couldn’t even sleep because of that
‘Where the hell is this doctor? I called him 30 mins ago and he has not reached yet..’
Rishabh complained as he paced in Kukki’s room
‘Relax Rishabh.. I guess it's viral that's why the fever is not reducing.. And the doctor must be on his way.. Must be stuck in traffic or something..’
‘I can’t relax Prerna.. Look at Kukki she is in pain.. I can’t see my daughter in pain..’
Prerna sighed deeply, she didn’t know how to calm him down. She understood his concern for his daughter because her own father would be on edge whenever she was unwell, and that hasn't changed till date. She glanced at Kukki who whimpered in pain once again and in an instant Rishabh was by her side
‘It’s okay Baby… I am here na..’
Rishabh scooped Kukki in his arms and hugged her small frame close to himself, Prerna shifted closer to them and whispered sweet nothings to Kukki. She looked at Rishabh who had tears in his eyes, she really felt bad for him, she placed her hand on his shoulder gently, which made him look at her
‘Don’t worry so much Rishabh, she will recover soon…’
She whispered softly and tried to assure him, they were both lost in each others but a knock on the door broke their moment, Rishabh’s house help stood there on door with the doctor
‘Finally he has come..’
Rishabh spoke in annoyance as he placed Kukki on the bed again, the doctor who was about to walk inside the room got scared for a minute when he saw the anger on Rishabh’s face but Prerna gave him a soft smile and asked him to go ahead and check Kukki as she stood by Rishbabh’s side with her hand wrapped around his arm, she was trying her best to not let him unleash his wrath on the doctor.
The doctor was done with his check up in a matter of few minutes, he looked at the duo
‘It’s nothing to worry about, bas viral fever hai, she will be fine by tomorrow, I’ll give her an injection for some relief from her body ache!’
He took out a syringe from his kit and filled it with some liquid, as soon as he pricked the needle in Kukki’s hand Prerna clutched Rishabh’s arm tightly and shut her eyes while Rishabh fisted his palm, after finishing his task the doctor looked at Prerna and a small smile crept on his face
‘Don’t worry, your daughter didn’t feel any pain.. See she didn’t even flinch..’
The doctor’s voice had made Rishabh come out of his trance, it was only now that he realized Prerna’s hold on his hand,she slowly opened her eyes to look at Kukki and her eyes were teared up, the doctor prescribed some medicines for Kukki. As soon as he got up Prerna rushed to sit by Kukki’s side while Rishabh escorted the doctor till outside but when he came back, he stood by the door as he heard Prerna and Kukki having a conversation with each other
Kukki was in a semi-drowsy state, she slept with her head in Prerna’s lap as the latter kept patting her head softly
‘Kukki… aap toh bohut brave ho baccha… you know I am still scared of injections..’
‘Saachi??’
‘Haan… even now when the doctor was giving you injection I had shut my eyes tightly in fear… but you didn’t get scared at all!’
‘That’s because Papa says that I am just like him and he is very brave na… so even I don’t get scared..’
Kukki said in half enthusiasm that made both Prerna and Rishabh smile
‘Right… you are just like your Papa..’
Prerna placed a soft kiss on her forehead and patted her to sleep, Rishabh felt his phone vibrate in in pocket and moved away from the room as he answered it, Rajesh had called him to enquire about Kukki’s health
‘She is better now unlce.. Thanks to Prerna.. She is taking good care of Kukki..’
‘I am sure of that… Prerna is very attached to your daughter.. And I know even you must be very worried for her after all you are a father, I can understand your situation… Prerna ko agar aaj bhi halka sa zukham ho jata hai toh main kitna pareshaan hota hun yeh bas main hi janta hun..’
Rishabh smiled at his words, he knew that Rajesh was trying to cheer him up and relax him a bit, they chatted for a few minutes before Rishabh noticed Prerna coming out of Kukki’s room.
‘Don’t worry Uncle.. Main Prerna ko ghar drop kar dunga..’
Saying so he cut the call as Prerna approached him
‘Kise baat kar rahe the?’
‘Your dad, he had called to ask about Kukki’s health.. Anyways… I’ll take you home, or else aapko der ho jayegi..’
‘No it’s okay.. I’ll manage.. You should stay with Kukki..’
Prerna tried to protest but Rishabh was adamant
‘I have promised your father that I will drop you home and I don’t break my promises.. You know that..’
She knew that now there was no point in saying anything else, once Rishabh had made a promise or given his word to someone, he wouldn't leave a stone upturned to fulfill them. Rishabh instructed Chandu to stay with Kukki till he came back as he left with Prerna.

‘Kahan reh gai yeh ladki? Subah se ek phone nahi kiya hai issne…’
Veena complained to Rajesh about their daughter but he was smiling at her
‘Shaant raho.. Rishabh se baat hui hai meri.. Vo khud aa raha hai Prerna ko ghar chodne..’
‘Arey vo kyun takleef kar rahe hain? Prerna khud bhi toh aa sakti thi na..’
‘Maine kaha tha usse.. Lekin tum Rishabh ko itni achi tarah se janti nahi… vo Prerna ko akele ghar aane hi nahi deta… shaam ho chuki hai… usse pata hai ki ghar pe tum tension le rahi hogi issliye khud aa raha hai usse chodne..’
‘Par phir bhi..’
‘Veena.. Tum tension lena chod do…aur..’
The doorbell had interrupted their conversation, Veena rushed to the door assuming that it was her daughter but when she opened the door she was surprised to see the people who stood at her doorstep.

‘I know that you will be mad at me for saying this… but I really want to thank you for being there for Kukki today..’
Prerna glared at Rishabh as he spoke
‘When you know that I’ll be mad that then why are you thanking me?’
‘Because I want to.. Seriously Prerna.. Aaj jo aapne kiya hai.. No one has ever done this for me or Kukki before… You spent the entire day just taking care of my daughter…’
‘Rishabh.. Please… I know that Kukki is your daughter but she means something to me as well, I love her a lot and you know that.. Usska khayal rakhne ke liye mujhe thanks bolne ki koi zaroorat nahi hai…’
As she spoke Prerna didn't even try to hide her anger in her voice, she was upset that Rishabh was trying to be formal with her.
‘I didn’t mean to upset you Prerna.. It’s just that.. I am still having a hard time trying to believe that you were there for us today!!’
‘And I am always going to be there for you and Kukki…so just get used to it! Next time se I don’t want you to be formal with me at all..’
Prerna was kind of scolding Rishabh now, but he was smiling while listening to her, he felt happy that she could behave with him like this, she was always frank with him, their age difference didn’t bother her at all and she wasn’t intimidated by him like the others
‘Why are you smiling now?’
She questioned him when Prerna noticed his expressions
‘Because I like it when you scold me..’
‘Waah… you are such a weirdo Rishabh, who smiles when they get scolded?’
‘Because the way you are scolding me, so rightfully… It’s making me feel happy ki aap mujhpe itna haq samajhti hain… also mera mana hai ki hum naraz sirf usse hote hain jise hume pyaar hota hai, jo humara apna hota hai… ‘
‘Ek taraf aap khud keh rahe hain ki aap mere apne hain aur dusri taraf mere saath formal ho rahe hain?’
‘Prerna… I don’t know how to express what I am feeling right now.. Mere liye yeh bohut badi baat hai ki aaj aap mere aur Kukki ke saath thi… jab hume .. Kukki ko aapki zaroorat thi ..’
Rishabh tried his best to frame his thoughts properly, he was still having trouble in conveying his feelings to her. He was always attracted to Prerna but he never thought that she could be a mother to Kukki, that idea had never come in his mind, and why would it? After all she was just 23, she was too young to be a mother, especially to a 5 year old kid, but today when he saw the way she cared for Kukki, he felt it in his heart that she would be the perfect mother to her. His chain of thoughts broke when he heard Prerna’s phone ring
‘Maa bas 10 minute main aa jaungi..’
Prerna started speaking even before her mother had said anything
‘Vo toh theek hai Priyu… lekin tu Mr. Bajaj ko ghar nahi la sakti…’
‘Kyun?? Kya hogaya Aur aap itni dheemi awaz main kyun baat kar rahe ho?’
Rishabh looked at her with concern as she spoke to her mother
‘Vo… Basu’s ghar aaye hain…’
‘Kya??’
‘Haan.. issliye hum dheemi awaz main baat kar rahe hain… aur kyunki vo yahan hai Mr. Bajaj yahan nahi aa sakte..’
‘Accha theek hai… aap jo unke paas main aati hun 5-10 minute main..’
She cut the call and looked dejectedly at Rishabh who was still concerned about the conversation she had with her mother
‘Basu’s have come home, so aap ghar nahi aa sakte..’
Rishabh rolled his eyes in annoyance at the mention of that family
‘Why have they come to your place at this time?’
He asked her and Prerna shot a glare at him in return
‘Baba and Moloy Kaka are good friends, you know that right? Aise hi aa gaye honge… but since they are already at home you can’t even drop me till the door, just drop me near the turn and I’ll walk from there…’
As much as Rishabh didn’t want to leave her like this in the middle of the road, he knew that Prerna had a valid point so he agreed to her
‘But as soon as you get off the car, I’ll call you so that I know that you have reached safely..’
‘Rishabh my house is just 2 minutes from where you will drop me..’
‘Still.. If I can’t drop you till your doorstep I can at least be on call… aur waise bhi aaj kal do minute main bhi bohut kuch ho jata hai…’
He spoke in a stern voice, and Prerna knew that no matter what she said, he wouldn’t change his mind so she just agreed with him. As soon as Rishabh halted the car and Prerna stepped out he dialed her number on his phone, she shook her head at him and saw him shrug through the window. She turned the other way and started walking in the direction of her house
‘You can start driving you know..’
‘Yes, but I want to wait till you go inside the house..’
‘I really don’t know what to say to you… I mean.. Mujhe ghar tak drop nahi kar paye toh do minute ke raste ke liye bhi call pe baat kar rahe ho aur uske baad bhi mere ghar main enter karne tak wait karne ke liye taiyaar ho… why?’
Prerna asked him and waited for him to reply but Rishabh had fallen short of words after her question, he himself didn’t know what was making him feel so paranoid right now, as soon as he had come to know that Basu’s were at Prerna’s place he had started feeling uneasy, something wrong might happen, he feared, and he didn’t know how to explain it to Prerna right now, when he didn’t reply to her Prerna got a little worried and called him out
‘Rishabh.. What happened?’
‘Uh… nothing.. Have you reached already?’
He asked impatiently
‘Haan.. I am just waiting for Maa to open the door.. Now you go back too, Kukki would wake up in a while and you should be with her ..’
‘Yeah.. call me later?’
‘Of course..’
‘Drive safe, and text me when you reach home…’
‘Yep!’
Both Prerna and Rishabh had huge smiles plastered to their faces as they disconnected the call but at the same time, something was worrying Rishabh,as he drove back to his place he silently prayed to God to prove him wrong and also give him the courage to confess his actual feelings to Prerna.
