WHY ? (few answers from google users at Quora)

Because he wanted to invest most of his movie earnings from Indian audience in some upcoming malls of Canada(and not India), and there are high surcharges for foreigners to invest (~15–40%) in property in a lot of developed countries.

And when you are going to invest millions of dollars, even 15–40% translates to another millions of dollars. For that money saved, all your “Patriotism”, “Indian-ness” and “Social responsibility” for India that you show in award shows and movies like Padman, Jolly LLB 2, Rustom, Baby, Airlift, Namaste London etc, goes down the drain and you sell your Indian citizenship and take up the Canadian citizenship for your personal benefits.

Of course, it is a personal choice and I am no one to criticize that decision of Akshay Kumar. The only problem I have is that he lies upfront about it in his media interviews that he has a “dual citizenship”.

Ok I read this shorter comment of yours.

So there was a need to accept canadian citizenship.

The idea of investing money in malls there must have been lucrative.

He wanted to avoid high surcharge and save some money. And he is also using his money to support causes in India. Even for the purpose of image building, parting with a huge amount of money is not easy unless the cause is close to your heart.

About need to do those movies, they r earning him big bucks. So why not. Even manoj kumar didn't mind being Bharat kumar. SRK has made a career out of romantic movies..And salman out of masala movies

and on top if it, he is shoving these films right after "that decision" thats why I stated the word pattern here.

The one who didnt thought for a second to throw his Indian passport is trying to be holier than thou.

I resent and reject the notion that someone who gave up Indian citizenship has willfully given up their Indianness.

Most countries in the world allow their citizens to have dual/multiple citizenships. India is one of the few countries that forces people to renounce citizenship when they get naturalized in another country. There are valid reasons behind India's decision, but India literally forces a Sophie's choice on people.

I was born and raised in India. I immigrated because my parents and family did. I became a US citizen as an adult out of my own volition. I chose US citizenship because 1) entering and exiting the USA is easier as a citizen 2) renewal of green cards is a cumbersome process with chances of being denied 3) I love to travel and immigration/visas are easier on US passport 4) I wanted a say in the politics and leadership of where I lived and worked.

I did not give up Indian citizenship on my own volition. I did so because the law forced me to. But when I was forced to renounce my Indian passport it did not 1) change the fact that I was born and raised Indian 2) that I have social and emotional ties to India 3) that India and its well being is important to me 4) my intrinsic identity as an Indian. It changed my legal status - not my emotional one.

I have no clue why Akshay makes patriotic movies. I don't read his mind. I have no doubts money is a factor. Patriotism sells. The fact that people register film titles in light of tragedy shows that even Indian citizens are willing to milk patriotism. So as an actor he I guess he is being shrewd and picking films that may succeed.

But I don't think acquiring foreign citizenship can ever sever someone's ties with India, especially if they were born/raised there. Level of patriotism varies by person to person - citizenship is not the only determining factor.

He's doing what works, that's all. India is going through a freakish nationalism phase and he's making hay while the sun shines. Mission Mangal was such a poor, low IQ movie that made scientists look like morons but the bhakti was enough and people still ran to watch it.

He'll keep on using it while it works. He knows he would look like a faker and hypocrite for making those movies so he lied about being Canadian.

Nobody cares though if he keeps his wallet open and makes big public advertisements of his donations. The begging bowl is always out so it works for him. Make 100 crores himself from fake desh bhakti and give away a tiny 1 crore donation and advertise it and make everyone happy.

I’ve in India all his entire life apart 6 years he spent at Bangkok. He is an Indian, and can make patriotic films. I’m from bangladesh, but I was raised in U.K.,, just because I have U.K. citizenship doesn’t make me a non Bangladeshi.

Under Canadian law, a person can be both a Canadian citizen and a citizen of another country. However, some countries won't let you keep their citizenship if you become a Canadian citizen, and India is among those countries. Therefore Akshay is not an Indian by citizenship anymore.

Ranbir thing is a PERSONAL thing, which cannot be compared with Akshay's.

Salman did NOT PLANNED that unfortunate incident, but Akshay DID PLANNED on giving up being an Indian.

Sanjay dutt's DRUGS thing is again a PERSONAL one which cannot be compared with Akshay's situation, and Sunjay's name has been CLEARED OFFICIALLY for being a terrorist.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are you talking about? Akshay giving up his Indian status is also a PERSONAL CHOICE.

How is philandering and drugs a "personal choice" but your nationality isn't? That is his PERSONAL CHOICE. And Let's separate Akshay's PRPFESSIONAL choices with his PERSONAL ones. I am no fan of his barring some of his comedy films but this is a weak defense.

Because that is Akshay, he does a genre/idea until he burns himself out, and than goes on to rediscover himself with something else.
