People at the top of their game are the loneliest. He's an Introvert - there is a mask for the outside world where he is daring and ruthless, another for his daughter who he shows his best side and the inner most RB is where his demons rage.

Characters like this only allow the closest people to know only 30% about themselves (case in point mausi). Very private. The only way to truly chip away their armor is by actions not words. Loyalty, especially the unconditional kind wins their hearts. Intelligence and humour wins their mind. you have to literally wrap yourself around them but give them breathing space and then they open themselves up to you.
