Part 2
Recap: prerna decides to expose masi in front of rishabh while masi simply urges her to get the deed done for all she cares.
Covering the corridor with long strides, as she threw open the doors, empty room winked at her and she let out a shaky breath of disbelief. Slapping her forehead, she slammed the door shut and supported her weight against the wall.
How had she forgotten? Mr. Bajaj was in Mumbai for a meeting and was scheduled to return after three days.
However, she didn't like the sound of allowing maasi's scheming another 3 days of peace. Definitely not. Determined, Prerna twisted around on her feet and throwing the door open, approached the study table and quickly picked up her phone.
However, her fingers that had been quick with their task flinched and hovered uncertainly over the green icon. Was it that urgent?! Especially when he had his hands already full with strenous deals and discussions...
Every attempt made to harm Kuki flashed in front of her eyes as she closed them to congregate her thoughts. Cherry on the top was recollection of the helplessness that had swept over her as he had slept three days straight following the accident, his cerebrum threatening to collapse if his state of stasis continued.
No! This matter was of utmost importance and demanded immediate attention.
As her forefinger shadowed the green icon, she waited with abated breath, her ears ready to pick the awkward silence of his breaths, the exact manner he would respond whenever she called. Instead, the call went on and on before the familiar voice replied on behalf of the supposedly busy customer and the call dropped.
Perplexed, she tried yet again only to knit her brows together as the ringing ceased altogether.
Switched off! It was unlike him to be out of reach even if he was seven seas apart.
As she pondered over her next course of action, her neurons scouted Mehra's name and picking out his number from Rishabh's diary, she called the man.
Mehra had barely parted his lips when Prerna cut him short, "Where is Mr. Bajaj? Why isn't he picking up? Is he....well?"
"Ma'am, sir is rather busy and..his phone is with me", Mehra replied, his tone laced with uncertainty making prerna's heart drop. Strange. But indeed so.
"He is fine, right?" She asked, her voice giving away her fears.
"Ofcourse ma'am!"
Mehra's quick reply however did the trick and prerna heaved in a sigh full of relief. "In that case, inform him when he gets free".
"Yes ma'am"
~*~*~*~
"I waited impatiently, called fervently and yet he never picked up. Never called back"
Anurag scrutinized Prerna as her last three words were drowned in misery and concern. Time hadn't been too generous to him.
"And when he came back--
Prerna paused and pressing her eyes shut, flexed her neck back and recalled how dark that night had been....how unforgiving his eyes had been.
~*~*~*~
"Mr. Bajaj!" Prerna called out shooting up from the sofa in foyer where she had fallen prey to sleep while waiting for him.
He stepped past the door and into the faint glow of chandelier, his face a mask of absolute torment. His usual enigmatic eyes were puffy red as his hair fell around his face in a mess. His perfect gait was displaced by his slumped shoulders, a sign of defeat.
As he approached her, he almost stumbled making her rush to his rescue. But he balanced himself and raised his palm upfront to stop her.
"Mr. Bajaj, are you fine?" Prerna asked drinking in his appearance.
He nodded in response, pressing his fingers against the bridge of his nose.
"Why..aren't you asleep yet?" He asked , his voice merely a decibel above whisper.
"I....aapse baat karni thi", Prerna replied gazing at the man, who was now pinching his eyes between his thumb and finger.
"We'll talk tomorrow", he spoke up dismissively, dumping his overcoat on the sofa as he proceeded to ascend the stairs.
Prerna hadn't missed it that he hadn't looked into her eyes, even once.
"I called", she spoke up as he halted halfway on the stairs.
"I was busy", came his mechanical reply.
"In what?" She asked back.
"Meeting", he breathed out.
"Must've been very important!" She spoke, her tone laced with ghost of sarcasm.
"Tomorrow, Prerna. Please".
She went mum as his fingers choked the life out of railing.
Treating her silence as agreement, he nodded his head thankful and disappeared into the corridor above the staircase.
~*~*~*~
"We have proofs, Prerna!" Anurag interrupted pulling her out of her reverie.
"Not concrete enough to accuse them", she stood up ready to leave.
"He was willing to believe you!" Anurag pointed exasperated.
Even against his better judgement, Bajaj had given prerna the benefit of doubt.
"There are some people you can never doubt".
"You, kept quiet to save him a heartache right?" Anurag smiled as Prerna started playing with her fingers.
"I am leaving"
And with that, she waved her arm to stop an auto and soon was speeding away from him. From Truth. From Rishabh Bajaj.
~*~*~*~
"Why? Why masi, why? Why am I so affected by her? Why can't I move on? Why does it hurt so much to see her happy while me and Kuki wallow in grip of despair? Chhod kyun nahi deti wo humein akela!!
Prerna's eyes snapped open as she looked around to realize that she'd fallen asleep while reading a book.
It was a first for her, seeing him so vulnerable. So fragile. His tears had pierced her deeply, did something that she could feel the intensity of damage done to his heart.
He hadn't picked up once but Mehra had. And Prerna had compelled mehra to divulge the oddity with her husband. It had been Menka, his ex-wife, his first love. She had been the one signing the deal in place of her husband, Gautam Singhal. Mr. Bajaj had been oblivious and the damage had been brutal. She knew it. She had lived through it everyday until she became unresponsive.
Yes. Mr. Bajaj would have believed her. At what cost though? He was broken enough. She didn't want to shatter him. Snatch from him that one place where he found solace, masi's lap. She couldn't. She couldn't just let him die.
~*~*~*~
"You wanted to tell me something?" Rishabh reminded Prerna, wearing his blazer.
"It..That was...I..." Prerna fumbled for words caught between rock and boulders. She wanted to tell him but couldn't force the words out. She couldn't bear the though of seeing him shed tears all over again. It cut her.
Rishabh was waiting patiently for her to organise her thoughts when a sharp cry of kuki's name pierced the air and the duo rushed towards Kuki's room in haste.
Their heart dropped as they saw foam coming out of kuki's mouth. Quickly she was carried to hospital and treated upon.
"It is a classic case of medicine overdose", Doctor clarified, " The medicines administered to Kuki are very heavy and have to be fed accurately. Even a missed dosage can incite side effects and here, she had been fed almost twice the dosage. There is no need to worry though, we have flushed out the drugs and she'll come to in 2-3 days".
She was enraged would be a mockery of the blood curdling anger that was seeping through her veins. They had taken it too far.
"How dare you?!" Prerna roared stepping outside ICU while Rishabh was still inside accompanying Kuki.
"It would do you good to keep your voice low, Prerna", Masi hissed.
"Let's see if you can still say it after Mr. Bajaj realizes that you are responsible for Kuki's situation", prerna glowered.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you" Masi smirked.
"What?!" Prerna bit back as Tanvi chuckled.
"Yes. If you don't want Rishabh to fall off his perch this very instant, you'd seal your lips shut, take the blame for this mishap and walk out of our lives for good".
"What nonsense?!" Prerna scoffed, not believing a word.
Tanvi just shrugged, "Fir ye mat kehna ki maine tumhe warn nhi kiya tha. Rishabh has been injected with a slow poison, he will die a painful death if you expose us. Because only we have the antidote".
Prerna's temper flared. The mother daughter duo were absolute monstrosity in the flesh of human beings. And so raising her hands, she wrapped her fingers around Tanvi's dainty neck and pressed hard.
However Rishabh came to her rescue as he pulled Prerna away and started dragging her out of the hospital, his fingers digging into her wrists.
"Mr. Bajaj, chodiye mujhe! Leave me!" Prerna threatened but to no avail. His hold on her only tightened further as he pulled her into an alley and jerked her towards the wall. Her back slammed against the wall and she groaned out in pain.
"Double dosage! How can you be so careless?" He shouted turning to face her.
"Or you did it intentionally?" Rishabh accused, venomously, as he pinned her to the wall.
"I didn't do it, Okay! I didn't!" Prerna shouted pushing him away as she jabbed a finger at him, "That was what I wanted to talk to you about! I called and I called but you couldn't care less. Even last night you were far too deep, wallowing for your ex that you had no time to lend me an ear!"
Her outburst flummoxed him. Made him realize that he had no right to blame her.
"Did someone else do it?" He asked alarmed.
Prerna had opened her mouth to disclose the truth when she recalled Tanvi's warning and clamped her mouth shut.
"Tell me, Prerna! Who is it? What do you know?!" He asked.
"I don't know. It's not like you will believe me!" Prerna lashed out and left from the scene.
~*~*~*~
At that instance, Prerna's phone beeped and reading the message she let out a sigh of relief.
You made a clever call, Prerna. Now, all you have to do is maintain your distance from Rishabh and everything will go back to the way it was. You stay away and Rishabh &Kuki stay alive.
