Rishta started filming on feb 1996 (see the mahurat clap' slate), it was the PEAK of Madhuri's prime time as been the new undisputed number one after HAHK and Raja.

I read multiple reasoning of shelving (THEY EVEN SHOT THE MOVIE like 10-15% and had schedule of FEW WEEKS) that included Aamir's issues with the script and date problems of the main cast.
