I don't agree that it was ahead of it's time? It's one of my favourite movies. And Karisma Kapoor's performance in the film is definitely in my all-time Top 10! Top 3 of that decade too, I think. I agree the soundtrack is one of Rahman's best ever, shame it was ignored at the awards. Technically it ticked all boxes: cinematography, costumes, make-up. And it was all done in sync-sound which was new at the time, Lolo credited that to her giving an even more earnest performance. The divorce scene when she cries with baby in her arms is my favourite. Always makes me cry.

I do love this film. I remember reading that Rishi Kapoor made some dumb comment that Manoj cannot play any Prince or King because he is dark. Ugh duh, how many Indian rulers do you think were darker than you? Anyway, I thought it was a good film but I haven't seen it in so long. Guess I need to catch up and rewatch.

I thought about this too, if it was because of Zubeidaa's brother in law or if it was Z herself, or if Zubeidaa and the husband who probably had a huuuuuge fight in the plane or if it simply happened by chance.. but it's hard to arrive at a conclusion.. bas, it had to happen perhaps, irrespective of the reason? what do you think? :p

Manoj was really charming during those courtship scenes, a beautiful actor. :)

Might be because it didn't get the praise that it deserve just like Dil Se.

Such films would have a bigger audience now as people are more open for such stories. They would get praised to the sky ans fetch all awards if they were to release today. Just like the Haiders ans Dirty Pictures...

And let's add to that being a female-centric movie is now a plus for a movie.

I don't think she's referring to the technicalities. I think she meant to say that the movie would have had more recognition had it been released now.

People whom watch films to see good, thought provoking stories, will appreciate the film and those whom watch for entertainment, will trash it. Not to say, the film wouldn't be entertaining... I watched it many years ago... When I was a kid.
