Chapter 38
"Where are you going, all dressed up?" Gaurav arched his brows seeing his young grandson dressed smartly, he'd donned on black jeans with a t-shirt and blazer.
"It's Geet's birthday do, all the staff have been invited to this venue" Kartik answered brushing his fingers through his hair once again checking himself in the mirror.
"Oh, wish her a happy birthday from us" Gaurav responded.
"He's checking himself out as if he he's going to get married" Kirsten commented as she walked through the doors.
"At least I can get married unlike some fatty" Kartik countered.
"You piss ant" Kirsten scowled.
"Enough both of you" Gaurav held his hand up looking between them as they glared at one another. "Enough! Kartik, what are you gifting her?"
"What do I get my boss who's got everything? I don’t even earn a quarter of what she earns" he muttered. "I've got this card and mug" he pulled it out and showed it to his grandfather.
"Oh that's nice, it's not something personal and perfect" he nodded his approval.
"Yeah, she's my boss. I didn’t want to get anything close to personal because its awkward. I've only been with them for just over a month" Kartik agreed. "Anyway I'm going to get going, it starts in about 15 minutes" he excused himself and left the house.
"What brings you here?" Gaurav turned to Kirsten. "Because Maan isn't here".
"Oh, where is he? I've been trying to get through to him all day, but he wasn’t answering".
"He had an appointment with his doctor today, he's been there since lunch. He's seeing his physiotherapist today" he informed.
"Oh okay" Kirsten nodded, "Well can you just get him to call me when he returns? I'll be setting off tomorrow morning with the team" she added.
"I'll get him to give you a call" Gaurav nodded and bid Kirsten bye.
Suneel looked around pleased with the décor of the venue he'd hired for his daughter's birthday. As requested a long table was set up for everyone to sit together on and eat.
"Balloons" Nick yelled excited as he came running in, Suneel rushed over lifting his grandson into his arms knowing full well how Nick loved to pop them. Often popped them with his Gigi at the end of any party.
"Not now, monkey" he shook his head and smiled as he took his grandson dressed in a dress shirt and black pants. "You look very handsome today"
"Like daddy?" Nick questioned.
"More than daddy" Suneel grinned, Nick giggled feeling pleased with the compliment.
"Will Gigi marry me now, Papa Neel?" he asked innocently.
"Well, how about we ask her when she arrives?" Suneel chuckled. "C'mon I've got a chocolate fountain set over there, let's go dig into some marshmallows".
Marissa smiled widely as she watched her daughter climb down the stairs, her daughter looked absolutely stunning, she'd donned on a mermaid silver sequin dress with a nude coloured underlining which made the dress seem transparent, Geet had gotten her hair cut, layered and curled loosely that flowed just past her shoulders, she didn’t miss the red highlights her daughter had gotten done.
Marissa's smiled faltered as she noticed the dress her daughter had donned had a very high slit. "You plant your legs out, will I see you flashing anyone?" she questioned.
"Dear God" Geet rolled her eyes, "Mum! Its fashion and I am classy enough not to flash anyone" she huffed. "Don’t ruin my birthday" she frowned.
Marissa smiled throwing her arms out and enveloped Geet into her arms, "I can't believe you're 32 years old" she squealed.
"Mum, I said don’t mention my age" Geet murmured hugging her mother back tightly. "And I haven’t turned 32 yet, I've still got a couple of days to go".
"Yes, well you've decided to spent it with your friends this time" Marissa sighed pulling back and cradled Geet's cheek. "I love you, baby girl".
It only seemed like yesterday, she'd carried her daughter in her arms and here she was, all grown up into a beautiful amazing young woman.
"I love you too" Geet smiled hugging her mother and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
"You look like a red head" Marissa commented as they walked towards the car.
"Do you think this colour suits me?" she brushed her fingers through her new coloured hair. "The hairdresser said it brings out the blue in my eyes" she fluttered her lashes teasingly. "And this colour is auburn" she added. "Red is more orangish".
"It suits you" Marissa told her unlocking her car door, "Are you staying at ours tonight?" she questioned.
"Nope, I'll be coming back here" she answered, "If you're asking as to why I asked you pick me up, it's because I want to enjoy my birthday without having to worry about driving my baby girl back".
"You're going out for drinks later?"
"Yep. Ashley, Kanchan and Izzie are in town, so they're able to join me" Geet responded, "We'll see who wants to join us from my office" she added.
A miracle is what I'm looking for.
Just one miracle
Give me a reason to continue on
"I'm just going outside for a run" Rajeev told his wife, he'd returned from his office early, due to leaving early this morning he hadn't been able to get in a jog before going to work so before dinner he'd wanted to go for a run out in their garden.
Rhea nodded offering him a water bottle to take with him as he often tired out more as he'd worked all day.
Rajeev started on jogging at a light pace, before picking up the pace. He slowed down as he noticed his son sat on the bench outside, his cane carelessly on the floor and his son's attention elsewhere, he was unaware of his presence as he walked over.
"Maan" Rajeev placed a hand on his son's shoulder.
"Dad..." Maan dragged himself away from his memories glancing around then looked at his dad. "Were you out for a run?" he asked.
"Mind if join you?" Rajeev asked sitting down on the bench.
"No, of course not" Maan shook his head.
"How were your appointments?" he questioned.
Maan thought back to his appointments earlier, "It was okay…"
"Just okay?" he inquired curiously.
"Dr Malhotra told me today I was progressing but the limp… the strain will lessen and it would seem like I'm not limping but.."
"You'll always be limping?" Rajeev understood.
Maan nodded clenching his jaw, "I won't need my cane soon as I progressed quite a lot apparently, but the limp… it's going to remain" he murmured.
"Oh, son…" Rajeev sighed heavily placing his arm around Maan's shoulder. He recalled the days he'd used to watch Maan run and working out in the blazing sun during the summers with himself and his father. Maan used to enjoy joining them, he opted to spend time with himself and his father during his free time whereas Kartik opted to play video games at the same age.
Maan smiled dejectedly brushing his hands over his face and shook his head, "I'm okay" he offered a smile for Rajeev. "I'm okay" he repeated, he didn’t know whether it was to convince himself or his father.
Rajeev pulled Maan into his arms and hugged him, Maan burrowed his face into his father's neck and clutched on to him unable to voice out his feelings.
"What the…" Geet looked horrified as she opened her new present, she narrowed her eyes and darted a glare towards her father. "You did NOT just buy me a blow up sex doll" she hissed.
"You said to surprise you with a date" Suneel laughed looking around, glad that his grandson wasn’t anywhere near them. Tara wouldn’t be pleased nor will Geet if he taught their innocent little Nick a new word.
"So you decided to get me this icky plastic doll?" she scowled shoving the head back inside the box. "Get rid of it or I'm telling mum where you're taking her for your anniversary" she threatened.
"You're f*cking evil" Suneel groaned.
"Obviously, I'm your daughter" she snapped. "I cannot believe you!" she hissed.
Suneel chuckled as he lifted the box and walked out to chuck it in the bin, as he was returning inside he smiled seeing more of Geet's colleagues entering.
"Hi Mr Shergill"
"Hi son, you look familiar?" Suneel looked confused unable to figure out why the young man looked familiar.
"Its me, Kartik. Gaurav Khurana's grandson" Kartik reminded.
"Oh yes… Sorry its probably my old age" he chuckled. "How are you?"
"I'm good, the venue is decorated nicely" Kartik pointed, "How is Mrs Shergill?"
"Marissa is good, did Geet invite you?" Suneel questioned, he hadn't invited any family friends as he recalled, this party is usually just for close family and Geet's friends and colleagues.
"Mrs Shergill did, she invited everyone at the office" he answered.
"Office?"
"Yeah, I intern at Geet's office" Kartik replied.
"Oh, okay" Suneel nodded smiling, "How are you finding it?"
"I'm enjoying it, the experience is good" Kartik responded.
"Suneel if you're discussing work here, you're in trouble" Marissa walked over, "Hi Kartik"
"Hi, Mrs Shergill" Kartik greeted.
"Kartik, call me Marissa" she laughed.
"Its either aunty or Mrs Shergill" Kartik responded, "If my grandfather or worse my grandmother hears me say that she'd run me over using my father's car" he laughed. "She doesn’t believe that I should call elders by their name".
"If only I had your grandmother in my life" Suneel commented dramatically.
Marissa smacked her husband on the shoulder scowling.
"I'm guessing your dadaji isn't hit by your dadima" he looked at Kartik who looked amused by their banter between husband and wife.
"Kaash meri biwi or bacche ko tumhare dadima…"
"Speak in English" Marissa pinched his shoulder cutting him off. "C'mon Kartik, starter is going to be served soon" she gestured to the large table.
"Gigi, we going to pop all the balloons after?" Nick questioned as he settled comfortably on her lap as they waited for their starters to be served.
"Yeah, we're going to stay for an extra half an hour and pop all of them" Geet nodded smiling mischievously.
"Yayy" he giggled as she tickled his sides.
"Happy early birthday" Sean walked over lowering his head and pressed a kiss to Geet's cheek followed by Tara and Theresa.
"There's my sweet girl" Geet cooed pinching Theresa's cheeks.
"I'm your sweet boy Gigi" Nick cupped her cheeks making her look at him.
"You're my perfect boy" Geet laughed hugging him and peppering his face with kisses. "Now its your turn" she turned her cheek. Nick gladly peppered kisses all over her face. "I wike your hair" he commented twirling her loose curl.
"Hey birthday girl" Ashley waved walking over, Geet stood placing Nick on her chair and greeted her friends.
"Where's your date?" Kanchan questioned. "Did you get the hunk from last year?" she asked.
"Kanchan only came to see your hunk" Izzie laughed. "Happy birthday" she wished.
"Thanks to Suneel Shergill" she called out loud enough for her father to hear, "I don’t have a date this year"
"I did get her a date" Suneel walked over. "She rejected him"
"It was plastic and BLOWN up" Geet responded emphasising on the word.
"You didn’t?" Ashley looked at Suneel in amused surprise.
"He did" Geet scowled crossing her arms.
"Papa Neel, what did you do?" Nick stood on the chair frowning. "My Gigi isn't happy now".
"You remember how I told you, girls are always moody for a couple of days and they get angry for no reason?" Suneel lifted Nick into his arms.
"Yeah?" Nick nodded.
"Well, this is one of those days. Your Gigi is being a little loopy"
"And Papa Neel is a looney bin" Geet scowled. "Mum" she called out.
"Great, why don’t you call your mother?" Suneel rolled his eyes. "Mummy's cry baby" he huffed.
"Suneel, leave her alone" Marissa walked over. "Sit down everybody, starters are coming out" she looked around.
Suneel mockingly rubbed his eyes, Geet flipped him her middle finger and sat down, Nick climbed down from his Papa Neel's arms and went running to his Gigi's lap and settled there.
"What did you get Geet?" Kartik asked Shaira as they sat together on the other side of the table.
"Oh we'd done an office collection and done this hamper thing" Shaira answered.
"Thanks for letting me know" Kartik frowned wondering whether the cup he'd bought was good enough.
"You hadn't joined us then, you came late" Shaira reminded. "Also, it doesn’t matter. She won't snuff it and snap at you" she rolled her eyes. "She isn't expecting you to get something she'd love"
"Well…" Kartik looked at the gift bag that he'd placed on the table unsurely.
"She isn't judgemental, she isn't going to judge you for what present you got her. Plus you're a kid in her eyes" she informed.
He rolled his eyes pouring himself some water and drank.
After they'd eaten their starter and main, a cake was brought out with sparklers. Geet cut the cake with an enthusiastic Nick assisting her excitedly. After they shared out slices of cake, everyone made their way to the dance floor to dance for a while with their friends.
Geet laughed as Tara twirled her and pulled her back into her arms, both sisters rested their hands on each other's hips and danced.
"Happy birthday little sis" Tara cupped her cheek smiling widely.
"Thanks, baby momma" Geet giggled placing her hand on the barely noticeable bump.
"May I dance with the pretty girl?" Suneel asked holding out his hand.
Geet tapped her chin thoughtfully, Suneel didn’t wait instead he pulled his daughter into his arms pressing a kiss to her temple.
"Happy birthday, love".
Geet smiled sliding her arms around his middle and hugged her father tightly, "Thanks, dad" she placed her cheek to his chest and together they danced like that.
As Geet promised, she sat on the chair with Nick popping most of the balloons.
Once Nick had been satisfied he was carried out by Sean and they were headed home as Tara had gotten tired and Theresa had dozed off.
Suneel and Marissa excused themselves feeling knackered, they'd loaded up their trunk with all of Geet's presents and left.
Geet's friends and colleagues agreed to visit the new nightclub that had opened, Izzie was apparently already on the VIP list and she could get them in quicker so they wouldn’t have to wait in line.
"Thanks for coming" Geet hugged Shibhani and saw to that she was climbing into her car and driving safely.
"Seeing as everyone is gone, how about we get ourselves a ride to the nightclub?" Zarina asked.
"How are you getting home, kid?" Geet turned to Kartik.
"I'm coming with you" Kartik responded smiling
"No, you're…" Geet paused. "Have you been drinking?" she questioned noticing the way he was smiling.
"Maybe a little"
"Which idiot served this kid?" Geet looked around annoyed. "F*ck's sakes" she huffed when no one answered. "I'll meet you in the club" she told them and pulled on Kartik's hand. "I cannot believe you" she scowled.
She hailed a taxi and pulled him inside telling the driver of Kartik's address. She couldn’t ask anyone else to make sure he'd gotten home safely as it was her party that he'd drank at and she was responsible as he was her employee even if this wasn’t a work event.
"You're never going to be invited to another party of mine, you know" Geet told him as she scrolled through her phone responding to friends who'd passed on their apologies for missing the party.
"But it was so good, I loved it" Kartik whined.
"Can you drive faster please" she asked the driver.
"Ma'am zyada traffic hai, Saturday haina" the driver answered.
"I don’t speak indian, what did you say?" Geet responded.
Kartik laughed, "Its Hindi and how don’t you know it? You live here, don’t you?"
"I've only lived here for a handful of years" Geet rolled her eyes, "It doesn’t mean you can expect me to know it, a lot of people like in the UK and USA yet they go their whole life living over there without learning English".
"You've got a point" he nodded animatedly. "But still, you got to know your mother's language right?"
"Which is English" Geet smirked. "And you're home" she informed handing the driver some cash asking him to wait whilst she helps Kartik out the car.
"You're really really pretty, you know" Kartik murmured.
"I'm very sexy and I know it" Geet responded finding slightly tipsy Kartik amusing.
"Correct" Kartik clicked his fingers and laughed throwing his arm around her shoulder.
"You're going to regret drinking, little kid" she informed.
"I wouldn’t because I touched you" Kartik placed his finger on her cheek.
"I'm going to make sure you regret this" Geet muttered smiling sweetly.
"Kartik…" Maan looked confused, he'd stepped out of his home office hearing noises. He was sure everyone had excused themselves after dinner and retired to bed. He'd halted at the top of the stairs seeing a very gorgeously dressed Geet Pearson stood in the hall with his brother at her side.
He climbed the steps cursing his pace, he looked at his brother concerned as he neared them. "Kartik".
"He drank alcohol" Geet informed, "We didn’t realise it until as everyone was leaving" she added.
"Kartik" Maan shook his head in disapproval and held onto his brother's hand pulling him away from leaning on Geet with his full weight though Geet Pearson held onto him as if he barely weighed anything. With Geet's constant training at the gym and her healthy eating, she was toned and strong enough to support Kartik without feeling like his weight on her was burdening.
"She looks really pretty, don’t she?" Kartik smiled lazily.
"I apologise for his behaviour" Maan looked at Geet embarrassed.
"It's okay, we're to blame. We should've made sure he wasn’t served any alcohol. He's still underage" Geet responded offering a smile. "I can explain to your parents" she added.
"It'd be best if they didn’t know" Maan responded, "Some things are better off as secrets, I'm sure Kartik won't drink after tonight again".
"Anyway, I'm going to get going. The taxi is waiting outside".
Maan nodded, "Thank you bringing him home safely".
"You're welcome" she smiled and walked out of the front door climbing into the tax giving the address of the night club where her friends were waiting.
"She's pretty" Kartik mumbled giggling. "You should date her, she's perfect" he continued rambling as Maan helped him up the steps, his brother was damn heavy for an 18 year old. Maan had lost his balance a couple of times as his injured knee almost gave in, without any incident Maan finally managed to get Kartik to his bedroom. "That dress was so so beautiful" he looked up at Maan as he was helped into his bed. Maan sat on the edge of the bed pulling his brother's shoes off.
"Bhai" Kartik sat upright wrapping his arms around Maan's neck. "You have to agree to seeing her again. Tell dadaji you want to see her again and say yes this time"
"Kartik, go to sleep" Maan pulled his brother's arms off. "You're drunk"
"How can I be drunk? I only had two… no two and a half, maybe a bit more…" he rambled. "She's perfect…"
I'm not Maan thought as he recalled Dr Malhotra's words about his limp.
