Part 1 :
( Not proof-read )
"Welcome to the wonderful world of jealousy, he thought. For the price of admission, you get a splitting headache, a nearly irresistable urge to commit murder, and an inferiority complex."
― J.R. Ward.
"Come on, Drishti bhabhi. Think about something else."
Drishti was in her room folding her clothes and her brother in law was pestering her. Again. She smiled to herself.
" Shikhar. I told you not to call me bhabhi. You can call be Drishti only. It is fine."
Even before both their respective weddings, she had felt at ease with him, and before being her husband's brother and her sister's husband, he was her friend.
"Okay fine. I will call you Drishti. Happy? Anyway you leave all this. Help me! How do I make her talk to me again? She barely looks at me now, and when she does, it is clearly visible she wants to murder me." Shikhar said in a sad tone.
Drishti turned around to look at him and could tell, with a look at his face, that he was in a miserable state. She thought about how they had gotten married and why they were in this situation. She had wanted her sister to be safe and had gotten in the scheme of swapping the brides and since then everything had been wrong in their life. The only positive side she found in this situation was that she was finally reunited with her long lost sister.
"Shikhar, just give her time and she will come around. You know how she is. Her anger will come to subdue. And also, her anger is totally justified. You've not been honest with us. Until recently, you've been against us. You even put our lives in danger!"
"I said I am sorry for it. I was helpless too." Shikhar replied guiltily.
"I am not saying this to make you feel bad. I just want you to realize why she is angry and why it is justified. Right now, she will doubt everything you do or say, and it is totally normal. The way we got married, has been wrong to start with and we will never be able to change that. Divi understood my position because she came to know I am her sister and she now knows why I did so. But your brother? He is also angry with me na? He is always asking why I married him instead of you. Everytime he catches us together, his insecurities will kick in. Mahima ma'am you know how angry she is with me, just by her way of talking or not talking to me. Sometimes just saying sorry is not enough. We need to give them time to process everything. And you, you were involved with our worst enemy. So she must be asking herself if you have really changed or it is just a drama from you. I will talk with her again to tell her I trust you now. And I hope you won't make it regret this."
"I know you are right Drishti. But this is unbearable. I just want things to be somehow normal between us again. She was angry before also, but she'd atleast be civilised with me. But yes I will give her the time and space she needs. As for bhai, he may have been angry with you at one point but I am sure he's glad he married you. He will not acknowledge it for sure but I know him. Seriously yaar ! Have you seen the glares he gives me everytime he catches us together? It is like he wants to kill me with his bare hands for talking to his dear wife!" Shikhar said with a laugh.
"Shut up!" Drishti said, smacking him playfully on his arm. "This is only because he is mistrustful because we were supposed to get married and he thinks there was something between us." she said more sadly.
"I am so sorry Drishti." Shikhar tried to comfort her, placing his hands on her shoulders, leaning over to look into her eyes. "This is all my fault because this swap was my idea but everything is being put on your back. Anyway! I will try talk to him too and I will even try with badi mom too! After all, if my bhabhi can talk to her sister for me, then this devar can face his lion like brother for you!"
Drishti laughed out loud and pinched his nose, like she does sometimes with Divya.
"Oh ho! My dear Shikhar. What would I do without you in this life?!"
"I hope I am not disturbing you."
They sprang apart on hearing the voice, and turned towards it. They both were shocked to see Rakshit standing in the room, looking at them, not so pleased.
" Mr Shergill. What are you doing here?" Drishti asked nervously.
"Why? Do I have to take your permission to come to my room now?"
"That is not what I meant. I mean you are home early today."
Shikhar, who knew why Drishti was feeling nervous, decided to peep in.
"Bhai, I came to see Drishti because I had to ask her something about Divya. I mean she is a woman too so I wanted to have her opinion on a ..."
He started giving an explanation but he was cut by Rakshit.
"Shikhar, Divya was looking for you downstairs. I don't think you should make her wait." He replied, making it clear, he wanted him out of his room.
"But bhai, let me explain first."
"Shikhar, it is okay. You go and see what Divya needs." Drishti said looking at Shikhar. She didn't want the matter to get worst than it already was.
Shikhar had no choice but to leave. He gave Drishti a helpless look before closing the door behind him.
Rakshit was furious. He again walked in on his wife having a great time with his brother and it made him burn. Everytime he'd catch them together, he'd feel angry because he wanted to be the one to make her laugh. He walked toward his wardrobe to change because he wanted to cool down instead telling her something he'd regret later.
"Mr Shergill. I can explain."
"Damn this woman." He thought.
Drishti knew very well how he was feeling in this moment and decided to make things clear immediately instead of turning around the bush.
"Mrs Shergill. I didn't ask for any explanations so leave it."
"But still I want to explain."
He turned around to face her and decided to pour out all of his anger.
"Oh really Mrs Shergill?! But why?! Who am I to you, for you to explain? Didn't you say last time, there is no relationship between us? If there is no relationship, then there shouldn't be any explanations! So save your time and strength. Anyway I also remember you said Shikhar was a better listener than I was and he was gentle with you. So why? Why did you even marry me and not him when you were supposed to? Why marry me if you knew you turned to him every single time after our marriage?" he spit at her.
