Part 1

She smiled warmly in the mirror as she adjusted her orange saree and mangtika. Life had come full circle in these 9 months. She was getting engaged for the second time!

Akshat couldn’t control his lips from turning up as he saw her descend the stairs, with unparalleled poise and grace. They had started off from a rocky patch and now he could see that patch turning green with saplings of love. Yes, he was in love with his unexpected wife. He could’ve never imagined falling in love all over again but here he was, rehearsing up a thousand ways in his heart to convey his feelings to her. He hadn’t confessed yet for he was scared that he will lose the camaraderie they had. He was mustering up that courage though. Maybe he should go down on his knees and pop the question at her?! Or should he go with the initial plan!? It is quite cheesy though…

“Where are you lost?”Guddan asked bringing him out of his thoughts.

Akshat smiled and shook his head in negative. Everyone around them was happy. Bahus had always approved of Guddan for even though their marriage had happened under disagreeable circumstances, her sensibility had won them over. 30 year old Guddan Gupta was the best saas a house could ever get.

“Forward your hand..will you?” Akshat asked as Guddan nodded and extended her hand towards him.

Fishing out the thread from his pocket, Akshat took her ring finger and tied the thread around it. He snuck a glance at her, as she stared amused at the stuff he was doing.

‘I know Guddan that you still haven’t moved on. And I don’t really expect you to. It took me 15 years to find love again and only 3 years have passed since….but I promise to love you and wait till the day, you’ll find in your heart a suitable place to provide me’.

“Pray tell, what are you doing, Akshat Ji?” Guddan asked confused as he took the other end of thread in his hand.

“Trying to be as romantic as possible!”

Guddan chuckled at his line while Akshat extracted the ring from the box and held it into the string of thread in his hand. He looked into her eyes and took a deep breath. Here goes nothing!

“I am the most boring person one would ever come across in their life. I am quiet and a very reserved person. Doing flashy things is troublesome- was my thought process until I met you. I can’t really explain the way my heart pounds in your vicinity or that unpleasant feeling that crushes my sanity when you look at that picture as if…..” Akshat paused and looked at Guddan. She was still smiling.

“The thing is you make me want to do things I would have avoided doing in the past. If it brings you happiness, I won’t mind making a fool out of myself because your smile light up my days. I….Guddan…I..l-lov….lov…” Akshat stammered at the end as the ring shivered at thread’s edge.

“…..”

But before could force the remaining letters out of his mouth, the transformer went out with a boom leaving everyone in the dark whilst the entrance to the mansion was thrown open as a silhouette staggered in accompanied by frenzied gust of wind violent enough to sway the big chandelier hanging from the roof.

Caught by surprise, thread slipped from Akshat’s hand as he as everyone else present shielded their eyes from the surprise dust storm enveloping the living room. As the wind started quieting down and the lights slowly switched on, Guddan blinked her eyes thrice and focused them at the person moving towards them. And the once dark silhouette brightened up to reveal a man of about 5’11 with eyes the colour of chocolate being shadowed by his bangs gingerly falling over the bandage wrapped around his forehead.

Guddan’s eyes widened in disbelief. Bhushan and Kaushalya took a step forward out of sheer shock whilst Revati had to cover her mouth to control the surprised gasp from escaping.

“Vikram!”

As the name echoed in Akshat’s ears, he turned to the man,his eyes aghast with shock. Vikram as in Guddan’s missing husband Vikram Rawat!

“Guddan…” Vikram murmured pulling his feet slowly in her direction. Despite the shabby blue hospital clothes he was dressed in, his physique betrayed his profession- an army personnel, Major general Vikram Rawat of Rajput Rifles.

Guddan couldn’t believe her eyes as she took a careful step towards him. The husband she had considered dead in a militant attack on Jaisalmer border had returned from the grave in one piece. She couldn’t believe it. That bad luck of hers had actually turned around for once!

As the duo reached each other, their steps halted whilst their eyes on the verge of tearing up just continued to look back at each other.

“Guddan…”

“V-Vikram!”Guddan raised a hesitant hand in his direction, her palm almost flinching back as it caressed his unruly prickly beard but then she cupped his cheek as he leaned into her touch and let out a relaxed sigh as his eyes blinked close.

“W-Where have you been?” Guddan asked, her other hand feverishly caressing his chest and arm in an attempt to break her out of her lucid dream, if she was having one.

“That day during the militant attack, in an attempt to save my life against the terrorists I had strayed deep into the Thar desert. Unfortunately I had a face off with the notorious bandits and they tried to shoot me down. Whilst I ran for my life, a bullet got lodged in my cranium and I fell down a sand dune, and into the party of nomads. They saved me and brought me to the hospital. I had been in coma since the past three years. Two days back, as soon as I came to…I hurried back to Indore to see you. The house was locked when the neighbors told me that I’ll find you guys here…”

As Vikram finished with his story, tears trickled down Guddan’s eyes as she caressed his forehead,“It m-must hurt..na?!” She asked.

Vikram nodded his head in negative, “ Ab tumhe dekh liya na toh dard gayab ho gaya…” He smiled and wiped her tears with the back of his hand. Guddan smiled back.

Akshat felt like a third wheel staring at the duo engrossed in each other. He had never seen Guddan so emotional. She had always been very controlled. Was this the end of his love story that had barely sprouted its wings?! As he stared at Guddan, he realized that their alliance 9 months back owing to Parv’s cheap tricks had been somewhat in favour of his agenda-of fulfilling Antara’s last wish but for her, it had been circumstantial as she had cleared when he had confronted heron first night.

“Who do you think you are, Mr. Jindal?! Agreed, that I married you by deceit but I had my reasons for doing so otherwise that kidnapper could have killed my chutki! You are not the only one who loved someone! Jaise aapki AntraJi main jaan basti hai, meri jaan bhi apne Vikram se alag nhi hai! Arre, you atleast reached your goal via this marriage. You had to get married nonetheless but I never wanted to! I have my Vikram. I have faith that he’ll come back tome one day and that day I don’t want to disappoint our love by showing him someone else’s mangalsutra on my neck. Never!”

Following the outburst, they had mutually decided to get divorced after serving one month notice period. However his mother fell ill and owing to her poor health, Guddan decided to stay to look after her. One month turned to three and they overturned their decision for divorce because they both felt that his family needed her. Three months turned to six and the initial hatred transformed into companionship and friendship. And two months later, her close brush up with death due to snake bite made him realize the depth of his feelings. But what about her? It was a given that she didn’t love him. Was it pity that forced her to stay?! And now the man she loved was back…was she going to desert him?! She won’t! Will she?!

Amidst Akshat’s monologue, Vikram fainted into Guddan’s arms from overexertion as Kishore and Vardaan helped to carry him to the guestroom.

“It’s nothing but overexertion. His brain is still coping with the time lapse so I’d suggest keeping him away from stressful things”, Doctor suggested as Guddan nodded and turned to her father, “I think we should take Vikram back to home”.

While Akshat could only look on. His future was looking bleak…

SO HOW WAS IT?

Alright, so in casesome people couldn’t understand, in this story Guddan has a past too. Just like Akshat, she had someone whom she loved and now he’s back! The idea for this culminated from my sheer curiosity of seeing Akshat reeling under the same painwhich Guddan will soon be undergoing in the serial! And yes, I do like Vikram alot! Guddan Akshat ki kahani mein he is the third most imp character. Love hima lot!
