No dear i m talking about north india & hindu rituals , kesari sindoor( my side its called kesari) which is applied first time 2 bride , it has it own meaning ,

My own MIL filled my maang in my engagement

If i m right then black is considered inauspicious in hindu rituals thats why yellow thread is tied .

(I m not claiming everywhere but only telling my side )

Deepika you know we can write a whole Research paper on this.Even within the same language speaking people there is a hell lot of difference.Me and my friends have this kinds of decisions despite all of us being Marathi speaking. So I don't think there is a point of us going in depth of this now.

true! north india (mostly UP, Bihar and neighboring states have this custom) i have seen in movies, shows and my friends wedding pics. Every state is different and so are customs. India is so diverse and each state has its own wedding. Infact the state i come from there is no sindoor only mangalsutra (black) also there are no 7 pheras only 4 or 3.5 or something like that. Some pandits ask to fill sindoor some dont. In my wedding there was no sindoor filling rasam. But for us sindoor=red like how north indians (UP, Bihar and surrounding states) go for yellow. for south indians atleast for tamilans mangalsutra=gold chain with a very specific pendent. Sikhs have none. In Tv shows they show general wedding- red lehenga, sindoor 7 phere, and black mangalsutra. Some tv shows which show very peculiar family based out of that state bengali, marathi, up, bihar show very traditional wedding.
