How did you interpret Begum Paara and Munniya's relationship in the movie? Explain your rationale.
I'm trying to gauge how different people perceive their interaction in the movie. The first time I saw the movie, I was in two minds. There is a scene where Munniya comforts Begum after a panic attack. It seemed too intimate to be friendship. It had to be a romantic spark. But I second guessed myself considering it was a Hindi movie. Also, Babban seemed so convinced that Munniya was into him - till the very end.

Then someone (on this forum I believe) pointed out that their relationship is inspired by Ismat Chugtai's 'Lihaaf' which is about a lesbian relationship between a queen and her handmaiden. Also, Khalujaan has a cheeky reference to 'lihaaf' when he and Babban are tied up.

Upon a second viewing recently, I am convinced that the movie portrays them as lovers - but its very subtle and not obvious. There are no professions of love, love songs or the usual grand gestures we expect in couples. But it is implied in their interactions and actions.

They were lovers. It was partly inspired by the Urdu short story called 'Lihaaf' which deals with the theme of lesbianism.

Who cares what Madhuri thinks of the role?

As consumers, we are free to consume the movie however we desire. 😆
