You have misunderstood the article, you should read it again. Between September 2016 and May 2018 he slid into her DMs, they were talking on and off via text, saw each other for the first time for 5 minutes at Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2017, went on one date and went to MET Gala 2017 for Ralph Lauren. This went nowhere... they didn't meet between May 2017 and May 2018, so if he made out with another girl in March 2018 it doesn't matter, not like him and Priyanka were together. They saw each other at MET Gala 2018 on May 7th and after that Nick asked her out again. The knowing after 3 dates part was after 3 dates in May 2018 when they officially started dating.

The whole thing is about their relationship and wedding... would've been nice if the focus was on her career instead seeing as she was one the first BW stars to make it relatively big in HW. But alas, at least this relationship is useful for something.
