Sujatha Passed Away
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 28, 2008]

Sujatha, the famous Tamil writer passed away yesterday night. The distinctive writer, who has penned dialogues for many distinguished films, has been admitted in Apollo Hospital a couple of days ago. He was in coma before leaving his last breath.

S. Rangarajan (Sujatha's real name) was 73 years old when he passed away. The prolific writer has written over 100 novels, 200 short stories, stage plays and number of essays. He has also been writing regular columns and Q&A series on science in popular magazines. He also served for a short time as the editor of Kumudham magazine. In addition, he has contributed to educational CD-ROMs.

Sujatha and Tamil cinema

The writer's close association with Tamil cinema is second only to his association with literature. He has written stories, screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies. He has been an integral part of the films by ace directors Mani Rathnam and Shankar. His dialogues in Kannathil Muthamittaal (Mani Rathnam) and Anniyan (Shankar) were well received by the public and critics. He had written many film scripts exclusively for cinema and notable among, which was Kamal Hassan's Vikram. Later Sujatha became as a permanent script writer for Mani Rathnam and Shankar. Most of their films including Iruvar, Ayutha Azhuthu, Guru, Jeans, Muthalvan, Boys, and the latest Blockbuster Shivaji were written by Sujatha only.

His demise has come as a shock to the literary circles and the film fraternity. Just like his fresh and unique way of writing has rejuvenated Tamil literature, his contribution to Tamil cinema – in terms of scientific approach and sharp intelligence – has changed the way dialogues are penned in Tamil films. The dialogues have become more practical and shorter after the entry of Sujatha into Tamil films. Aging has never affected his writing, which always used to be smart and young.

He was also the Chief of the team that designed the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) during his tenure in Bharat Electronics as GM of R & D. The machine is now used in elections all over India.

He is survived by his wife (Sujatha Rangarajan) and two sons.

Our condolence to his family and friends. May your soul R.I.P

He is one of my fav script writes, it should to mention that his last movie script will be Robot, very ironically he handed over the completed script of Robot and told Sankar that it will be his last movie One more reason to watch Robot.

R.I.P, Sujatha. I was really shocked to read this. 😭

I believe he was ahead of his time where his writing was oncerned. Did he not write about women's rights and women's emancipation even those days? If I am not mistaken, he also wrote on domestic violence and many of Balachander's stories on women.

What a loss. Thanks mels.

OMFG!!

I DON'T BELIEVE THIS!! 😭 😭

This guy has been my GOD, growing up! I totally love him to bits. He is just too good to be true 😭 I'm yet to come across any writing that has impressed me like his!

There had been several times in the last few years he was so sick and he had been hospitalized, and there was even this one time about a couple of years ago when he had severe pneumonia, and the Tamil world had given up all hopes on his survival, but.... as always, he came back with a BANG! He even wrote jokingly about it in Anadha Vikatan that though he had been hospitalized for very serious health issues, his near and dear, friends and family always think he is immortal and will return home to write more "junk". Too bad, that it is not a joke this time. 😭

I remember when I was a teen, I saw him with Kamal in the Adyar Park Hotel lobby and I ran upto him to get his autograph. Both Kamal and him were very surprised that I was actually asking for Sujatha's autograph, but not Kamal's. Sujatha smiled at me and told me that he will sign my book, but only after Kamal does (actually it was the last page of a romance novel and out of curiosity he turned the front to see what I was reading). To this day, I admire the way he handled the ego issue (if there was any - ie. in case Kamal would be hurt) so tactically.

I would say he had been my HERO, and he is nothing short of AMAZING. I can think of a horde of adjectives to praise his talent. This is a humongous loss to the Tamil World and I mean no one, no one, and no one can fill the void that he would create.

My last hugs to you, Sujatha!! I'm really misty when I'm typing this. And may your soul RIP!

Yes, I am shocked. He had an unique approach
to every issue. His novels are so full of life
and logic. He had an amazing knowledge about
IPC - I have always imagined his Ganesh as a
clone of Sujatha!! His "Karaiyellam Shenbagapoo"
is his master piece, I would say. It is a great
loss to Tamil literature and also to us - ardent
admirers of his prowess in writing. May his soul
rest in peace. My deepest sympathies to his family.
