Kunal did not leave Maa or Dida

He left his wife, because maa and dida sided with her,

If I remember correctly they welcomed him with their heart and he left without a thought, he didn't even look at them, he ran to Nandini.
He did not come back to his house, he doesn't think so high of Mauli, he thinks she is a giri hui aurat yet he left responsibility of his mom and grandmother on her.

If he really didn't leave them, he would have come back instead of calling to wish them Diwali, can you imagine someone wishing you happy Diwali after giving you pain of a lifetime? Then again after listening to his mom, he did not think about her pain, he said - Mai Nandini ko aur dukh nahi de sakta
And left the country for 6 years.

A son who never cared for his own mother or grandmom ... Wonderful guy

And now he wants to unite not cuz he loves them but pari needs family..
