I quickly read up my own story (and a lot of other stories too!)

The explanation is this -

The events were all sudden. When Abhijeet was caught at Ananth's house, Daya was not there. He came later. By then the gun, everything was in the forensic lab.

Daya went home and then with a cool head tried to think over what could have happened. That is when he wanted to know about how many bullets were remaining in Abhijeet's gun. In the lab maybe he had a glance but he didn't open it and count. Even if he did, the number won't be correct.

Salunkhe would have anyway taken out the cartridge, tried to match bullet with the one in Ananth's body...he would have shot another bullet (into water) to check the markings, etc isn't it?

So the number won't match. Daya specifically asked Salunkhe how many bullets were there at the time he got the gun. I hope this is clear.
