Batti Gul Meter Chalu has take a very ordinary opening of around 20% and this is on a partial holiday for Muharram. If the holiday was not there then it would be a poor start for the film. Despite having a boost of Muhharam the opening will not be among the top ten this year even though its one of the films this year to get a holiday start.
The film is similar to the Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet Ek Prem Katha and also by the same director. That film was about the toilet issue facing some of the smaller towns across India and this is about the electricity problem in many towns. But in reality the audience does not really care much for social issues and are looking for entertainment. Toilet Ek Prem Katha had a well itched out love story which could clearly be seen in the trailers.
Here in Batti Gul Meter Chalu there is a younger cast than Toilet Ek Prem Katha but there was no love story in the trailers which just keeps the youth away.
The film will need to show upward momentum and this is despite coming off a holiday and which will not be easy. The film needed a double digit opening day number but that is not going to happen going up the morning numbers unless there is a miraculous jump in numbers.
Manto which was supposed to release was a last minute postponemnet due to an issue between the distributors and UFO.
The Punjabi Qismat took a very strong start and may well be the second biggest opening for a Punjabi film in 2018 and one of the biggest ever. the collections of this film were three times the numbers of Batti Gul Meter Chalu in the cities of Punjab.
The target for Qismat will be a 2 crore GROSS opening day and remains to be seen if it can get there. The film does not have the benefit of Muharram holiday as that holiday is not there in Punjab.
