Track 28 - Demons, Imagine Dragons
Padma sat on her bed, lost in thought. She'd never even imagined that her past would come back to haunt her in such a cruel way, after so many years.
35 years. It had been 35 years since Karthik had left her, without a word, after finding out that she was pregnant with his baby. Had he ever wondered what had happened to them after he left them to fend for themselves in such a brutal way? Did he ever regret his decision? Did he ever try to find them again, to make amends? Or, did he carry on with life, never thinking about them again, never worrying if they were dead or alive?
It was true, that in the first few years after he'd left, Padma had harboured hope that he would see the error in his ways and come back. That he would accept Padma, and maybe even Riddhima. If he did so, she'd get her family back. Yes, Shashank and Smriti had adopted Riddhima, but Padma knew, if Karthik ever came back, the two of them would get their Riddhima back, too.
But, as the years passed them by, and no one heard hide or hair from Karthik, her hope diminished, till one day, there was none left. That was the day Padma really broke. The day she woke up one morning, and just knew that Karthik was never coming back for her, or for their daughter.
Padma had been strong when she found that note from Karthik, she'd been strong, when, with a heavy heart, she'd turned to Shashank and Smriti for help, she'd been strong when Smriti had agreed to the adoption, knowing how scared Padma was of the society. She'd even been strong the day she'd signed the adoption papers and Shashank and Smriti had taken her baby girl home, to raise her as their own.
But, that day, knowing he wasn't coming back, was the day that Padma Bansal was no longer strong enough to handle it all on her own.
For months after that, Padma spent her life in a daze, breathing but not living. Her life was consumed by her work and her loneliness, the only few moments of respite being those when she saw Riddhima at the hospital when she came to visit her father. It was only those few interactions that carried Padma on for so long, her only hope, her silver lining. Nothing else mattered.
And slowly, she learned to live with it. She learned to live with the darkness, the acute sense of being alone, of having no one. It was difficult, but she did it anyway, because she wanted to live. Not for herself, but for her daughter.
She'd made peace that this would be her life. But then, her daughter grew up. And, she found out the truth about her family. Then, Padma got married to Shashank, and her life changed. Completely. Suddenly, it was full of happiness - two daughters who adored her, a mother who loved her and a husband who cared about her so very much. She found a family, something Padma hadn't had in a long time.
In all the years, her family had made her forget the pain she'd gone through, the loneliness she'd lived in, the hopelessness she'd felt. The things that defined Padma Bansal, were but a few distant memories for Padma Gupta. And, she loved that. She loved her new life, with her family, with happiness, with love. She'd never ever imagined, in her wildest of dreams, that one day, so many years later, her past would collide with her. And in such a way.
Padma wanted to hate Shilpa, she really did. But, she still couldn't. Because, what Armaan had said was right. It wasn't Shilpa's fault. Nothing was. However, knowing the truth, all Shilpa reminded her of was the betrayal she'd suffered so long ago. A betrayal she thought she'd moved on from, but was only now realizing she hadn't. Maybe, she never would. And, of course, how could she, after her trust was shattered so brutally? She should have realized earlier that she'd have to live with this hatred and anger for the rest of her life. But, she'd so expertly locked it all away, over such a long period of time, she herself didn't understand she was doing it.
"Padma?" Shashank called her gently, shaking her shoulders, and bringing her out of her thoughts.
"Yes?" Padma asked him.
"Are you okay?" Shashank asked her. "All this happened today... It must have been a huge shock."
Padma shrugged noncommittally. What was she supposed to say? Of course she wasn't okay.
"I'll be fine," she promised him.
"You can talk to me," Shashank assured her.
Padma smiled at him. "I know. But, I'm okay," she told him, not knowing how to express herself to him.
Not wanting to push her and make her uncomfortable, Shashank dropped it and turned to a medical journal that would be his companion for the evening.
Sighing, Padma left. She knew Shashank meant well, but she just couldn't stay with him now. She couldn't let him know the shame she still felt over being so naive and gullible and being manipulated by Karthik. He'd already done so much for her - adopted Riddhima, married her, given them both a place in his family, and in his life. What more could she ask from him?
She went outside and sat by the pit in the garden, looking, but not really seeing, still lost in a world of her own.
"Uhm," Armaan cleared his throat, catching her attention.
She looked up, dazed for a second before coming back to the present.
"Armaan," she greeted him with a small smile, which he returned.
"Do you mind?" He asked, gesturing towards the empty seat beside her. Padma shook her head and Armaan sat down.
The two of them sat there, silently, not speaking a word, for what seemed like an eternity. Armaan desperately wanted to say something, to ask how she was holding up, but didn't want overstep. So, he shut his mouth and sat there, waiting for some sort of okay from Padma, who very well understood that Armaan wanted to talk to her, but was afraid to break the serenity of the moment.
But, sometime later, it could have been minutes or hours and Padma wouldn't have known, she finally decided to put him out of his misery and let him say what he wanted to.
"It's okay, Armaan. You can talk. I won't break," she told him.
Armaan smiled sheepishly. "I... I..." He fumbled, not knowing what to say.
"I ke aage bhi kuch hai, ya bas itna hi?" She asked, making them both laugh.
"I just wanted to check on you," Armaan admitted. "After we spoke in Riddhima's room, I realized just how much you're toiling over it. I mean... It's more your past than Riddhima's that's come back with Shilpa. Riddhima, thankfully, never had to deal with Karthik on her own. She's never even met him. But you... You were engaged to him. I'm sure... I'm sure you had imagined your entire life with him and then he just left you when you needed him the most.
Seeing Shilpa, it must have brought it all back. Everything you felt then - the pain of losing your life partner, and then your daughter. I mean, it can't be easy to deal with that."
Padma smiled. "Your past coming back to haunt you, in any shape or form, no matter how much time has passed, is not something easy to deal with," she murmured. "I'm sure you, of all people, understand what I'm saying."
Hadn't he woven dreams of a happy life with Riddhima? Just like she had with Karthik? They were both betrayed by the one person they'd envisioned spending their entire life with, and though the circumstances were vastly different, she knew that dealing with such a heartbreak wasn't easy. But, he was doing such a splendid job. Padma was so proud of him. She knew just how difficult it was, and Armaan was doing it all with a smile on his face. She didn't think she could deal with Shilpa the way he was dealing with all of them.
They all were a part of his past. A past with painful memories, full of heartache, betrayal, and loneliness. Just like Karthik was for her. Maybe, what Riddhima had done wasn't as grave as leaving her fiance and child, but she'd still turned her back on the man she loved. Yes, it hadn't been her fault. At all. Shashank and Padma had forced her into that marriage, but that marriage was the reason why her daughter wasn't with this man, sitting in front of her, living a happy life, full of love and togetherness.
That marriage had not only caused pain to Riddhima and Sid, but also to Armaan. Padma suspected that his pain was far worse than that of her daughter and ex - son in law, but there was nothing she could do to soothe it. Not then, and definitely not now.
"Hmmm," Armaan mumbled, taken aback by her words. His past had come back to haunt him, too. As had Rahul's. But, they were both trying to stay afloat in this situation, and thankfully, had been succeeding.
"Padma Aunty... I just... I want to apologize. I mean, if you think I spoke out of turn, if you think I shouldn't have said anything. Or maybe, if you think I'm unnecessarily interfering in a family matter. I just... I want to say I'm sorry, for overstepping," Armaan told her. "But, I couldn't help myself. Shilpa is... She's very special," he breathed, not knowing what to say.
How was he supposed to explain to Padma, just how much Shilpa had come to mean to him, in such a short span of time. She'd become one of his closest friends, his confidante. She'd been such an understanding and supportive force in his life, even if for just a short span of 2 years, but she'd been there. She'd helped him work through a lot of stuff.
"I... I told her... I told her that we should have spoken privately with just Riddhima first and then broken the news to you, but she was being so stubborn and ekdum se, usne sabke saamne bol diya. For that also I'm really sorry," Armaan continued. "I mean... I know that everyone knows Riddhima is adopted, and thankfully, Shilpa had the brains to not take any names, but it still must have come as a huge blow. And for that, I'm sorry."
"Armaan, why are you apologizing for her? She was the one who took the decision to speak about it in front of everyone, not you. And anyway, like you said, she didn't mention me. Ab baat mujhe akele mein pata chale ya sabke saamne, dhakka toh utna hi lagega na. I'm not mad at Shilpa. In fact, I'm amazed that she had the courage to say something like that in front of so many people, some of whom are strangers for her. But she still showed the courage to stand up for herself and tell the truth. Whatever issues I might have with her, I can say this. She's brave," Padma replied.
"Will you be okay, Aunty?" He asked her.
Padma smiled. "I don't know," she answered truthfully. "This is... This is not something I ever imagined would happen, Armaan. How can I be okay with it, when I haven't even been able to wrap my head around the fact that this is actually happening and isn't some bad dream that'll end when I wake up?"
Armaan sighed. "Maybe revealing it wasn't the right thing to do. Sab toh achcha chal raha tha. And then, like an idiot I had to jump up and say, Riddhima deserves to know the truth. Gods! What was I thinking?" He muttered out loud.
Padma chuckled half heartedly at his words. "You were thinking that it wasn't right to lie. And, I think you're right. All of us deserved to know. Shayad, shayad yeh baat bohot pehle ho jaani chahiye thi, hum sabke beech. But, ab jo hua so hua. Uske baare mein zyada mat socho. We can't change it."
"I'm really worried about you, Padma Aunty," Armaan admitted. "I know, that you'll not say anything, bas andar hi andar yeh baat aapko pareshaan karti rahegi. But, you'll not say anything to Riddhima or Anjali or Dr. Shashank, because you don't want to add to their woes. And... I understand, to some extent. But, agar... I mean, if you're okay with it, and you feel like talking... I'm always here for you. No matter what. You can come up to me and talk about this. Shayad... Shayad utna satisfactory aapke liye na ho jitna yeh baat Riddhima ya Anjali se share karna hota, but... Main aapki thodi help toh kar sakta hu," he told her.
Padma smiled widely. "Thank you, Armaan. That means a lot to me. Maybe I'll take you up on your offer sometime. But, not today."
"Whenever you need," Armaan promised.
"Thank you," Padma repeated.
Armaan took a deep breath before continuing. "I... I want to talk about something else, too. Maybe this isn't the right time to say all this, but I still want to say this."
"What is it, Armaan? You can tell me anything," Padma assured him.
Armaan smiled. "I just... I want to tell you that I've really missed you, Padma Aunty."
Padma grinned brilliantly on hearing that. "I've missed you, too, Armaan. You know something? Right from the start of your internship, I'd always been so fond of you. Your charming smile, your helpful yet easy going persona, all of it. You were this completely overgrown manchild and seeing you at work everyday, I didn't even realize when I started thinking of you as a son, in many ways.
It was only after you left all of us that I realized just how much you'd come to mean to me. Woh kehte haina, you only realize what you have after you let it go."
Armaan was in tears after listening to her. "Can I give you a hug?" He asked.
Instead of replying, Padma wrapped her arms around him in a motherly hug. Feeling her close to him after so long, remembering all the times she'd supported him, understood him and been a mother to him, Armaan couldn't help but feel overwhelmed.
After Bua Maa & Bi, she'd been the third woman who'd loved him like a mother. He'd always adored her so very much.
"You're the best, Padma Aunty," he blubbered.
She gave a disbelieving laugh when she heard how he was choking on his words and pulled back to see tears falling from his eyes, just like they were from hers. Hugging him after so long had meant so much to her. He'd been her son. And she'd missed him.
"Armaan! Why are you crying?" She asked, a little surprised. The only other time she'd seen him crying was when he'd told Shashank the truth about his parents and assumed that doing so would be the end of his relationship with Riddhima.
"I just really missed you," he replied. "You've always been really important to me, Padma Aunty. And I really missed you when you weren't around."
It was true that Mummy (aka Rahul's mom) was the one woman who he put on a pedestal right next to his Bua Maa, but, Padma Aunty was up there somewhere, too. It was only after seeing her again, and interacting with her now that he realized just how much he'd missed her.
"Paagal," Padma said, slapping his cheek lightly.
Armaan shrugged.
"Armaan," Padma said after a slight pause. "I know that your relationship with Riddhima has changed drastically from what it once was, and because of that, our relationship has also suffered, but, I want you to know that I've always cared for you, beta. You've always been like a son to me and you always will be. No matter what your equation with Riddhima is, I don't want our relationship to change because of it. You'd always been so close to me, even before you and Riddhima started dating. Our relationship, the bond we shared, that wasn't dependant on what was happening between the two of you, before it all ended. And I don't want it to happen again. I've found you after all these years, and I don't want to lose you again."
Armaan grinned widely when he heard that, silent tears falling from his eyes again. He rested his hand on Padma's cheek and wiped away her tears, while she did the same for him.
"But, Dr. Shashank?" Armaan asked. "I know he's not overly fond of me right now."
Armaan had been wondering about what had made Shashank change his stance on their relationship ever since he'd come to New York. After Armaan had returned to Mumbai post the shootout, Shashank had been an anchor for him. He'd been so lost after he found out about Riddhima's marriage and he remembered just how Shashank had taken care of him then. It made him think that Shashank was happy to see him, that he (Shashank) still cared about him. So, what had changed between then and now that Shashank was back to disliking him?
"Don't worry about that," Padma replied, bringing Armaan out of the memories of Shashank hugging him at the basketball court as he cried his eyes out.
"I know that Shashank is apprehensive right now, but a lot has happened in these few years. All of it has changed him. He'll come around, I promise," she assured him.
Padma knew that Shashank had a soft spot for Armaan. After Armaan had left Mumbai again, not wanting to be a hindrance in Riddhima's marital life, she'd seen Shashank worry about the boy often. In fact, Shashank had even tried to locate him, just to make sure that he was doing okay, but hadn't been successful.
It was only after the annulment that Shashank's aversion for Armaan had come forth. He'd found it easy to blame Armaan for Riddhima not wanting to give Sid a chance. It was better than admitting to himself that he'd made a mistake in forcing Riddhima to marry Sid in the first place.
Padma knew that, somewhere, Shashank still cared about Armaan, and a small part of him was happy to see Armaan again and proud of all that Armaan had achieved, but that part was so deep and locked in so tightly that Shashank wouldn't give it a chance to show. His stubbornness and his ego had always been a huge negative aspect of his personality, and sadly, the ones that were the most dominating traits that defined him.
It was the same stubbornness and ego that had driven Riddhima away from him. Shashank couldn't bear that Riddhima had so actively rebelled against a choice he'd made for her, that she'd decided that Sid wasn't who she wanted to spend the rest of her life with when Shashank was the one who'd suggested the alliance. It was this resistance against her decision about what to do in her own life, her decision to choose happiness for the first time since the day she'd woken up to find out that Armaan had left her because of her paralysis, that drove a wedge between them.
Things had anyway been deteriorating since the time Riddhima had found out the truth about Armaan's condition and how Shashank had hidden it all from her. They escalated when Shashank and her had forced Riddhima to marry Sid despite her numerous protests. But when Shashank refused to stand by her decision to leave Sid was when Riddhima snapped. She couldn't take it anymore and that day, in the heat of the moment, she'd said many things that she'd later wished she could take back, but wasn't able to.
Padma knew that she was equally at fault because she'd supported Shashank in every decision he'd made, but seeing her daughter's life getting destroyed right in front of her eyes, seeing the light leave Riddhima's eyes with everyday she spent as Sid's wife, seeing her smile vanish the day Armaan left, Padma had tried to right her mistakes and had been a vehement supporter of Riddhima during the annulment. It was the only time that she'd disagreed with Shashank on anything, but she was proud of herself for doing that. She'd do it again without any regrets.
"Are you sure that Dr. Shashank won't mind us going back to the way we were before?" Armaan asked, startling Padma out of her thoughts.
"What?" She asked, a little confused as to what Armaan was talking about. She was so lost in the past that she didn't even realize that Armaan was still sitting in front of her.
"Are you sure that Dr. Shashank will come around?" Armaan repeated.
Padma nodded. "Don't worry about it. I'm sure he will."
"If you say so," Armaan replied skeptically.
"I do say so," Padma replied. "And, don't you know better than to question us Gupta ladies?"
Armaan laughed. "You're right. All of you are forces to be reckoned with."
"You'd do well to remember that, Dr. Mallik," Padma replied, smirking widely.
Armaan grinned. "Um, I think I should let you get back to whatever you were thinking about when I disturbed you. Bas, ek baar aapse baat karna chahta tha. Thank you for listening to me."
Padma smiled in response and then, after a quick hug, Armaan walked away, leaving Padma to her thoughts, yet again.

Yay! 2 weeks later, an update! Woohoo! I hope y'all enjoyed this look into Padma's psyche and her conversation with Armaan.
Up next is some Riddhima time. :)
The next update will be the weekend after the next. So, stay tuned till then. :)
When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood's run stale
I want to hide the truth
I want to shelter you
But with the beast inside
There's nowhere we can hide
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
When the curtain's call
Is the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl
So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you made
Don't want to let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don't want to hide the truth
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go
Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save their light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
