An Indian Dystopia

I recently stumbled upon an interesting article stating that India was getting ready to make a monitoring program which will enable the government to instill a nationalist spirit to the population, neutralize, counteract or anticipate India's adversaries across media and improve India's reputation across the world.

This program would be polyglottal as it would be able to understand many Indian regional languages as well as English, French, Dutch and Mandarin.

The program will pick up information on social media, forums, news wed sites, will stock them and will then put them in three categories (Positive, neutral, negative). And will also be able to identify influencers who will be scrutinized 24/7.

This program would enable the government to take preventive and corrective measures in the event of a crisis which could be detrimental to the government and/or the country.

This isn't the first time India is using technology to monitor its population.

NaMo (the PM's app) is known to collect its user's personal information without their consent and share them with a third party.

This app has been downloaded more than 5M times and is already present on JIO's mobile phones.

Aadhaar which was first launched by the previous government to enable the destitute to access some services and to prevent fraud and corruption, is now used to collected under a unique ID, citizens (Indian and people residing in India longer than 6 months) fingertips, head shots and iris. This service has since become mandatory (under BJP rule) to open a bank account, declare taxes, open a phone line or have an insurance as well as getting for getting welfare, pension or grants.

(SC did reaffirm that the privacy of information was a fundamental right in India under its Constitution).

After what is happening in China where citizens are rated and shamed thanks to a monitoring program (they can even lose their friends as having friends with low rating affects yours) it's not hard to imagine that it has the potential to go haywire even if using technology to take the temperature and controle the social climate is a smart move.

It made me wonder, are there Indian dystopian movies out there? If not : Is it because it's a genre that wouldn't attract audience or because it would be seen as criticizing the country ?

Matrubhoomi (2003) which is a dystopia about women condition and Paani (shelved?) which is a dystopia on water are the two movies which come to mind but otherwise nothing else comes to mind.

India makes love stories and emotional stories only. Others don't find an audience.
But Big Brother is watching. Search for some item and then every second page will show that item ads.

And media is still trying hard someway to scuttle the internet because social media is blowing the lid off lies.

I think they can depict a love story in a dystopia though. The universe in which it would be pictured could be the background for the love story.
I think it's the lack of good authors. They seem to have similar backgounds and taste in Bollywood and are doing mostly the same things.
And those already established tend to repeat the same formula as to ensure themselves to have a successful product on their hands.

It's true that with Internet people are very visible but are we really monitored. Are people cautious while using social media because of possible repercussions ? Are people's privacy (it's supposed to be protected) really violated while surfing on the Internet ?

Media indeed has multiple roles but their primary duty used to be the propagation of government-fed information. There role has evolved but now and then, one can notice that the information they spread is in accordance with government policies.

Don't expect anything from these guys here. Good movies never do well. They only want emotional drama.
Something big seems to be cooking in the world and Indians are the most clueless whn it comes to knowing much less prepping. That dystopia may become a reality soon.
