Day 2- Getting Closer?
Kabir hadn't slept a wink the previous night. He played the previous day's incidents like a movie in his head, trying to confirm if he was dreaming or if it was a reality. He dared not leave the room.
Finally, at 11 in the morning, he freshened up and went to the kitchen to grab something to eat.
"Good Morning, The girl smirked at him.
"I thought you will leave, He scowled.
"You aren't that lucky to escape me, Her smirk grew more menace.
"Waise, I must say, you are hot! He decided to annoy her and make her explain what was exactly happening. He wasn't quite sure if she would fall for it, though. She threw a disgusted look at him and handed him a cup of tea.
He looked at her, eyebrows raised. She sighed and took a sip from the cup. She passed him the cup and walked out of the kitchen.
He followed her to his parents' room. The door was slightly opened. He knocked and entered before she permitted him to do so.
"Look, I really don't understand what is happening here, but I have a question for you, are you trying to protect me, or harm me?
"What do you think? She arched her eyebrows and kept her hands on her waist.
"You didn't poison or hurt me till now, but you knocked me out and have kidnapped me IN MY OWN HOUSE! He threw his arms in the air and sat on the bed.
"I understand if you don't trust me Mr. Singh Rathore, and honestly, I really don't care what you think about me or the current situation, so please, leave me alone and stop asking such stupid questions. All you need to know is that for seven days, I need to keep you here in this house, for your own safety. If things go right then,
"You'll leave? He interrupted her. She nodded, but her expression went grim.
"I don't want to intrude your freedom or privacy, but there are a few things that are damn messed up, He nodded.
"I think my Dad was murdered, He said to her, after a long silence. He didn't know why he trusted this unknown girl, but he felt like doing so. He wanted to share his intuitions with someone, and if she was ready to listen, he would tell her.
"Why do you think so? She said, suddenly getting interested in conversing with him.
"Because I know Dad, he would never drive rashly. The brakes failing seems like an unsolved puzzle, because Dad was quite particular about safety and made sure that the vehicles were safe to drive, She nodded but did not reply for a long time.
"I miss him, He muttered softly as tears gathered in his eyes. She placed her hand on his shoulder, quite awkwardly.
"I understand, She said, her voice genuinely sounding sad and empathetic. Kabir didn't know what came over him as he pulled her closer and hugged her waist. She flinched in his arms, but he rested his head on her midriff and started sobbing.
She pulled away from him and kneeled on the ground.
"You have o be strong, Mr. Singh Rathore. I am sure your father won't like seeing you so broken.
"He won't like seeing me in this mess, too, He wiped his tears and looked at her. She looked away.
"Your secretary dropped a message saying that they have rescheduled the meeting with the Canadian clients in the next month. Here is your phone, you can send her a reply, but be careful with your words, She handed him his phone that was in the bedside drawer.
"You can reply an ok and ask her for further details, He replied and handed her the phone without unlocking it. She was almost taken aback to see that he didn't use this chance to contact anyone.
"I thought you'd ask for help, She said as she unlocked his phone.
"I know I cannot get out of this mess without you leaving me, He replied sarcastically.
She sent the message and kept the phone back in the drawer.
"Promise me that you'll let me go,
"Mr. Singh Rathore, I have said already so, She rolled her eyes and turned to face him and yelped.
"f**k, my toe! She sat on the bed, holding her left feet.
"A year of training and I can't even go about without injuring my toe, damn it, She cursed under her breath. Kabir looked at the toe and gasped in shock to see it bleeding.
"Where is the first aid? He asked her.
"In the cupboard. He rushed to the cupboard and removed the first aid box. He cleaned the blood and bandaged the toe.
"Thanks, She muttered and smiled. Kabir's heart skipped a bit. He nodded and went to the washroom to wash his hands.
He looked in the mirror reflection, his heart was thudding like crazy and his breathing was heavy. He felt so weird. He couldn't explain why he felt so good to be with her?
He left the room without speaking a word to her. She didn't say anything to him either. In an hour, she gave him his phone. His Senior Executive had sent him the required presentations and statics for the meeting.
He worked on the deal for a long time and fell asleep on the table itself. He somewhere felt that he could trust the girl because he was left with no option.
Day 3- The Lost Friend
As Kabir joined the girl for breakfast, he smiled. She had prepared his favorite breakfast, fried eggs, tomatoes, toast and green tea. Kabir had gone to England to complete his education and he liked English cuisine more than Indian.
"Thanks, he mumbled.
"I know you like to work out. I have my gym equipment and since you can't leave the house to for a jog or to the gym, you may use mine, she said.
"Itni meherbani kyun?
"I stole your freedom, not your daily routine, She answered.
"So you do realize you have kidnapped me?
"Whatever! She snapped and left the breakfast table. He munched on the toast, annoyed.
He continued with his office work, like the previous day. This helped him, a lot. Other than music, business deals would somehow make him feel better. As he worked on the deal, he felt strong, as if he had control over something, at least.
After some hours of work, he decided to check on her. He felt an urge to call her "Miss. I-won't-reveal-anything because it suited her mystic behavior but it was too long. He didn't know why he wanted to check on her, but he wanted to do so. Tu sach mein paagal ho gaya hai Kabir, there is no coming back for you, he thought and chuckled. Yes, he was mad. Mad about the girl who shared the house with him.
He wanted to know her, to understand her. Somehow, hating someone never came to Kabir. His parents had raised him to be an empathetic man.
He peeped through the window to see that she was video chatting with someone. She looked up at him and raised her eyebrow. Excusing herself, she walked to the window.
"What? She asked.
"I am bored! he replied, with a smirk.
"I am not babysitting you, to entertain you with pom-poms in my hand, She snapped.
"I would love to imagine that, Miss. I-won't-reveal-anything he smirk grew wider.
"You know, a short, much revealing dress, like the ones the cheerleaders is some game, He whispered. She sighed and rolled her eyes.
"Are all the men the same? Tharki? She asked, annoyed. He couldn't help but chuckle.
"Yes sweetheart, He said. She looked at him shock for a few seconds and then closed the window, on his face.
Kabir Singh Rathore had his ways with girls. Women threw themselves at him. He was blessed with looks and knew how to flirt and win girls over. For fun, he had tried his technique on her and surprisingly, she had responded, in an unusual way, agreed!
~~~~~~~
He went into the kitchen at 12 o'clock and decided to cook. Cooking wasn't a hobby as such, but preparing a dish reminded him of his parents. His mother was no cook and his dad would prepare meals for them and have started teaching Kabir to cook, initially to annoy Vasundhara, but then the training took a serious turn, after Vasundhara's death.
What would she like to eat? He really couldn't figure out. From all he had understood from the last two weeks, she only consumed healthy food with a very little amount of fat or oil, as if she was on a diet.
So he decided to prepare diet food for her and a good snack for himself. As he selected ingredients, she stepped in.
"I thought I'd help, he said.
"Cooking reminds you of your father, doesn't it? She asked.
He looked at her in shock. "Tumhe kaise pata? He asked. She gulped nervously.
"You knew my father? He asked. She nodded.
"Yes, he was a great man, she said. He could sense pain in her voice as if she was about to cry. His eyes softened and he held her hand. She looked at him, masking her emotions.
"I'll help you. He nodded.
The two cooked silently and had lunch, without sharing any words. She then went back to her room while he sat in the living room.
How did Dad know her? She seemed close to him. After all, she was almost about to cry at his mention. Was he imagining things? No, that was not possible. Kabir's ex-girlfriend had suggested him to be a psychologist because he could easily predict someone's emotions.
Then what was that all about. He needed answers. He went and knocked on the door. She opened after quite some time. She looked as if she had washed her face just now.
"How did you know my father? He asked.
"I can't tell you that,
"Please, I want to know, He almost begged. She ignored him and was about to close the door. Anger surged inside him. He held her shoulders and pushed her inside the door and closed the door. She tried opening it, but he locked it. She stood on her toes to open the door, but his height proved to his benefit as he held her hand, twisting it behind her back and locking her between himself and the door.
She breathed heavily, her eyes wide in surprise. She gasped and almost looked like a baby who wanted to run away.
"Please, let me go, she said.
"No, answer me and I want the truth, He said sternly.
"You won't understand,
"Trust me, I will. After losing my father, I'll trust anything,
"You are too weak, she said, Her other hand caressing his now grown beard.
"Then help me be strong, he whispered as his thumb brushed against his lower lip.
He knew her defenses were falling, and he had to persuade a little more. The cunning businessman in him overtook the emphatic person that he actually was. He knew she had been crying, for there were dry tear marks on her face.
"You won't like it, She said as tears escaped her eyes.
"Doesn't matter, He repeated his words.
He released her hand and she crumpled to the floor.
"I am Ramesh Gangwal's daughter, Nisha.
He looked at her in shock. His Nisha? His Golu? No this was not happening. His Nisha was the almost person he had ever known. The most lovable person to breathe on this planet.
This woman was nowhere close to his Nisha.
"You are lying, He said angrily and took a few steps away from her. Taking this as her chance, she left the room. He sat on the bed, trying to connect the dots
Nisha was his Dad's best friend's daughter. Laxmi Gangwal nee Haider was his father's nanny's granddaughter and Kabir's grandmother had raised her as her own. Laxmi ran away to marry her boyfriend, Ramesh when she was 20 years old, but when he left her, she came to discover that she was pregnant. Nisha was born when Kabir was 3 years of age and they had grown up together till Laxmi decided to shift to Delhi was Kabir was 13 years. He hadn't heard from them ever since. Kabir would ask his father about his best friend and her mother and Arjun would promise to bring her over, but as Kabir grew older, things changed. Kabir was surrounded with new friends, and he forgot his Golu.
The rest of the day, Kabir spent in the attic, searching Nisha's pictures, not even sparing the self-claimed "Nisha a thought. They had so many memories together. Kabir was almost crying when he stepped out of the attic, with their toys and pictures in his hands when he banged into the girl. She looked at the toys and touched them, She looked at him, with tears in her eyes and then walked away.
They didn't have dinner that night. Both locked themselves in their rooms. Kabir still stuck in the past and she struggling with the fears of the future.
