JULLIUS CAESER:

WHEn Caesar read about Alexander's life, he burst into tears. Perhaps the more ambitious of us ought to cry with him.

"His friends were surprised, and asked him the reason of it. Do you think,' said he, I have not just cause to weep, when I consider that Alexander at my age had conquered so many nations, and I have all this time done nothing that is memorable?'

HANINBALL:

Hannibal is often regarded as one of the greatest military strategists in history and one of the greatest generals of Mediterranean antiquity, together with Philip of Macedon, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Scipio Africanus. Plutarch states that Hannibal was questioned by Scipio as to who was the greatest general, and Hannibal replied either Alexander or Pyrrhus, then himself.

AUGUSTUS THE GREATEST ROMAN EMPEROR:

After dispatching of Antony and Cleopatra, Augustus apparently enjoyed himself while in Alexandria. At that time it was truly one of the world's greatest cities. To his credit, Everitt points out Augustus was a tourist and not a looter as other Roman conquerors had been. One of the major attractions Augustus wanted to see was the tomb of Alexander the Great. It stood at the intersection of the city's two main roads and the body was in a gold and crystal coffin. Alexander's body had been embalmed according to the Egyptian rituals and thus would be relatively well preserved.

Alexander the Great was thirty-three when he died. Augustus was thirty-three when he rid himself of Antony and effectively united the east with the west. Everitt tells what happened when Augustus requested to view the body of the Greek king:

The young Roman gazed at the body for a time, then paid his respects by crowning the head with a golden diadem and strewing flowers on the trunk. He was asked, "Would you now like to visit the Mausoleum of the Ptolemies? To which he retorted, "I came to see a king, not a row of corpses.

Doubtless Augustus admired Alexander. However, what happened when Augustus bent down to kiss the forehead of his idol is one of those little weird quirks of history. For in doing so, he accidentally broke off the nose of Alexander the Great. One cannot help but wonder what the reaction of the "son of God was when he did this. Did he say, "Oops, sorry about that,

NAPOLEAN:

Few men could match Napoleon for ambition as well as Alexander III, the 4thcentury BC king of Macedonia. A general of unrestrained skill and ambition, Alexander conquered half the known world, his empire stretching all the way from the Mediterranean to India.

Alexander's youth was doubtless part of his appeal to the schoolboy Napoleon. Inheriting the throne at the age of 20, Alexander achieved all of his spectacular successes before dying at the age of 32.

SCIPIO: ''Alexander is the greatest there is no doubt about it. He was undefeated you see.'' Scipio replied to Haninbal

POMPEY: ROMAN emperor declared himself the Alexander the great of Rome.

Roman emperor caracalla: called himself Alexander the great. Tried him military strategies but failed...

Cleoptra: ''if only I was as strong as Olympias'' Cleoptra to his son before sending him away from the fear of Augustus...

ROMAN EMPERORS Nero calingula and others all visited Alexander's tomb...
