BW audiences are not dumb, neither are rural audiences or North audiences. People can appreciate a good masala movie and a thought provoking social movie.

Is there such a thing as objective "integrity"?

I'd say integrity is very subjective. There is also a fine line between integrity and plagiarism. If a remake/adaptation is the same frame by frame it is considered intellectually lazy and plagiarism. If a remake/adaptation wavers too much from the original it is considered to lose integrity. So remakes/adaptations have to walk very fine lines.

To me, Dharma production will lose the integrity of Sairat. There will be a lot of polish and glamor that is untrue to the original. There will be elements that are larger than life and dishonest to the original. I will hate every moment where it seems to glamorize the original. But that is purely my perception.

Now the movie could be a dud or blockbuster. I cannot predict the future.

But from the trailer, I think the adaptation is true to the audience it is trying to reach. It is not as rustic or simple as the original. But it is not a glamorous hyped-up production either. It is neither dumbing it down nor is it trying to be high art. It is presenting what audiences love - a refreshing love story with fresh faces and unique setting. But there is a social message embedded that will make audiences think.

Karan Johar is not perfect. Everyone knows he is a catty person who favors his cronies. Everyone knows his panache for unrealistic cinema. He is a truly problematic persona.

But Karan Johar is not the ruiner of everything either. He gives audiences what they want. And goddammit I a sucker for the most unrealistic, schmaltziest, cheesiest shit ever. In some ways I'd say romance is Bollywood's fantasy fiction.

And every now and then he does invest in good cinema. I think Dhadak is one example. So are Wake Up Sid, Raazi, Dear Zindagi, Bombay Talkies and now Lust Stories.

I think some people are just blinded by Karan Johar's flaws that they don't see he is a human with some positive traits as well. Its no different from fans who are so blinded by their love for a star that they refuse to see flaws.

Yet you are a big fan of that pretentious hack Bhansali and his dumb movies which are nothing but cosplay involving mannequins with the same 3 act structure that are as old as the hills? 🤔

There is a big audience for Dharma films. Not everyone wants to watch realistic films all the time. There needs to be good balance between all types of films. People like escapist cinema as well..where there's pretty and glamorous people/settings and KJo is a master at that. Given the kind of personality he is and the kind of films he makes, he will always get brickbats.
However when you start making remakes of movies that were rooted in realism and glamorize them, then of course you will get brickbats as people have certain expectations.

When it comes to nepotism, it's been going on since forever. KJo gets the most hate not because he launches only star kids, but because he goes out of his way to limit opportunities for others, convincing filmmakers to cast star kids instead of outsiders. He doesn't do this with his in-house films. He finds out which director is making what and then acts and comes onboard. Woh toh he has absolutely no control whatsover over Adic and YRF, otherwise I'm sure things would like different.

When you limit the talent pool this way, then yes you are eventually going to ruin the industry. All industries and companies only survive and become successful with a good mix of new talent who bring a fresh perspective, but when this is limited to just nepotism..then well eventually the industry will stagnate and no will care as the folks with the good ideas will go elsewhere and develop that as an industry (i.e. online medium now...eventually it will change to something else).

@Bold: That is really the worst thing that he does IMO and I absolutely hate that about him. If he only wanted to launch star kids in his own productions, then fine, that's on him and that's what he believes in. But what kind of man has to go and snatch roles from outsiders and make sure only his pick of star kids get the best opportunities even in the outside productions?! He is certainly limiting the chances a lot of newcomers get to prove themselves. And it's such a huge shame. We as an audience also deserve diversity in the type of talent we get to watch on our screen. I'm so tired of seeing Alia everywhere and now the same problem is going to repeat with Jhanvi and Sara. Ugh.

Karan usually focuses on glamor a lot even when it's not needed :/ choreographed zingaat is such a turn off, >__<.
Even non marathi speakers applauded sairat and watched it more than once and that's not just because of the actors... I cannot say the same about dhadak.
the hate on Janvi, I don't really wanna think about it... Just give her a chance:) She looks plain to me, you'd know what I mean if you watched marathi sairat:)

analytically it was raj kapoor who ruined this industry.
as much as i have read rishi was nt that great nor his other sons.
scriptwise he aped the west.he in particular copied Charlie Chaplin.
characterwise I have read he had no ethics no morality.he reportedly
exploited many ladies.his films were not Indian.culturally he polluted
it with his western outlook n fixations.i find him overrated n the man
who should win this title that kjo seems to win in this gen.

Exactly, we deserve diversity as well and we get limited to some 5 faces rotated in film after film. It's no wonder people switch over to other mediums where there is more diversity, more talent, and it's overall a better use of our time.

Chalo KJo does what he wants to, but I wish the others wouldn't enable him by agreeing to his demands. But how many people can say no to that kind of money and exposure?

At least YRF signs the directors for 2-3 film deals so they're officially making their next few films under their banner, so it's more understandable that there's a collaboration in casting. I remember Sujoy mentioned he had gone with Kahaani to YRF. Adi C loved it and wanted to produce it, but wanted a 3 film deal from Sujoy. Sujoy said no and really struggled to make the film & get finances until TDP released...and then the rest is history after Kahaani's release. Wish there were more people like Sujoy around.
