KJO has lost his integrity. I keep banging on him because he is one of the few who own a studio, who is a taste maker. He could change the narrative. Movies are not a charity, but at least when he "adapts" movies why can't he keep some of the integrity in the little things. Why should everything be candy coated ? BW audiences are not dumb, neither are rural audiences or North audiences. People can appreciate a good masala movie and a thought provoking social movie.
Is there such a thing as objective "integrity"?
I'd say integrity is very subjective. There is also a fine line between integrity and plagiarism. If a remake/adaptation is the same frame by frame it is considered intellectually lazy and plagiarism. If a remake/adaptation wavers too much from the original it is considered to lose integrity. So remakes/adaptations have to walk very fine lines.
To me, Dharma production will lose the integrity of Sairat. There will be a lot of polish and glamor that is untrue to the original. There will be elements that are larger than life and dishonest to the original. I will hate every moment where it seems to glamorize the original. But that is purely my perception.
Now the movie could be a dud or blockbuster. I cannot predict the future.
But from the trailer, I think the adaptation is true to the audience it is trying to reach. It is not as rustic or simple as the original. But it is not a glamorous hyped-up production either. It is neither dumbing it down nor is it trying to be high art. It is presenting what audiences love - a refreshing love story with fresh faces and unique setting. But there is a social message embedded that will make audiences think.
Karan Johar is not perfect. Everyone knows he is a catty person who favors his cronies. Everyone knows his panache for unrealistic cinema. He is a truly problematic persona.
But Karan Johar is not the ruiner of everything either. He gives audiences what they want. And goddammit I a sucker for the most unrealistic, schmaltziest, cheesiest shit ever. In some ways I'd say romance is Bollywood's fantasy fiction.
And every now and then he does invest in good cinema. I think Dhadak is one example. So are Wake Up Sid, Raazi, Dear Zindagi, Bombay Talkies and now Lust Stories.
I think some people are just blinded by Karan Johar's flaws that they don't see he is a human with some positive traits as well. Its no different from fans who are so blinded by their love for a star that they refuse to see flaws.
