Porus' launched as 'Digvijaya' in Sri Lanka

MUMBAI: Siddharth Kumar Tewary's gambit to own the IP for the historical drama Porus which is currently airing on Sony appears to be paying dividends. The show has, according to sources, successfully travelled to Sri Lanka. The buyer for the 260-episode series is Maharaja Television (MTV). Swastik Productions, the production house driving the show, also owns the intellectual property (IP) rights for the series.
A source close to the development said that Porus has been renamed as Digvijaya in the Sinhala-dubbed version and has been launched on channel Sirasa TV in January 2018. The show was launched with a big screen premiere with industry leaders and advertisers, two days prior to its first telecast on the channel. Through the channel's online platform, Digvijaya would be also reaching out to the Sinhalese diaspora worldwide. According to another source, Maharaja TV has paid USD 5000 to Swastik Productions for an hour-long episode of Porus.

My dear Priya,

This is excellent news. Though the show does get my goat of late, as a professional diplomat who has been marketing India abroad for all of my 38 years in the IFS, I am always delighted when something from our mathrubhoomi does well abroad.

I made a mistake, and thought that the Sri Lankan deal was for just USD 5000/- in all, which was far too low. Now that it has been clarified to be USD 5000/- per one hour episode, or for 130 in all, Swastik should get USD 650,000/-, which is a good, round sum. Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand too should be able to pay well for Porus, though Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia would not be able to afford to pay so much.

All told, Swastik should be able to rake in
at least USD 5 million, or Rs.32.5 crores, if not more. Nice going!👏

Two asides.

One, the Sri Lankan dubbed version is called Digvijaya, or world conqueror, which clearly refers to Alexander the Great. This reinforces a point I had made on another thread, about the importance of the Alexander connection for this show.

Two, I very much hope that they get really good translators and dubbing artists. Before the National Films Development Corporation took over the subtitling of Indian films sent for film festivals abroad, the subtitles were very poorly done.
