Iyer House

An unexplainable gloom has taken over the house. The entire Iyer family is in a state of shock. Bala, Kiran, Adi and Ruhi and sitting in the drawing room and their eyes are glued on the main door. After what feels like ages the door finally opens and Madhavi comes in.

Vishwa: Kya hua Madhu?

Madhavi: Maine koshish ki Mihika se baat karne ko but woh kuch sunne ko ready hi nahi hai. Upar se woh Santoshi bhi usko support kar rahi hai. Yeh sara idea toh Simmi ka tha toh woh bhi usi ki side le rahi thi aur kisi ne mujhe Raman se directly baat karne hi nahi diya. Mai jaise hi usko kuch bolne ko jati Simmi ya Param interrupt kar dete. Aur Raman ne last mein mujhko bola ki hum Mihika ke family hai aur humko udhar sare functions ke liye aana chahiye.

Bala: Hamari Mihika aisa kaise kar sakti hai?

Vishwa: Hamari koi nahi lagti hai woh aaj se. Sab sun lo. Hamara ab usse koi rishta nahin! Aur hum kisi function mein nahin jayenge.

Romi: Aapko aana chahiye!

Everyone looks up to see Romi standing at their door. Romi then walks in.

Kiran: Yeh tum keh rahe ho Romi...tumhari ex-wife tumhare bhai se shaadi kar rahi hai!!

Romi: Mujhe Mihika se koi matlab nahi hai. Mujhe matlab hai toh mere bhai aur bhabhi ki khushiyon se. Isliye keh raha hoon aap sab ko wahan aana hoga.

Vishwa: Matlab kya hai tumhara Romi?

Romi: Main akele is shaadi ko kaise rokunga? Hum sab milke shayad kuch kar bhi paye. Simmi Di bahut clever samajhti hai apne aap ko- sari rasmein Punjabi style se karna chahti hai kyunki bhai-bhabhi ki shaadi to Tamilian style se hui thi na so unko lagta hai aisa karne se bhai ko kuch yaad nahin ayega. Lekin hum har function mein kuch na kuch aisa toh kar hi sakte hai na ki bhai ko kuch yaad aa jaye.

Bala: Not a bad idea Romi!

Madhavi: Vishwa Romi is right! Hume apni Ishu ke liye yeh toh karna hi hoga.

Bala: Tumhare pass koi idea hai?

Romi: Haan idea hai toh but first Ruhi tum Pihu ke pass abhi jao. Usi ke pass sona aaj. Main nahi chahta ki yeh Mihika aur Bhai wali baat use Simmi di se pata chale. Aaj dekha na divorce wali baat kaise bataya unhone Pihu ko. Woh already shattered hai. To tum uske pas raho and kal tum use batana aur samjhana ki hum yeh shaadi rokne ki puri koshish kar rahein hai so that woh aaj ki tarah upset nahin ho.

Ruhi: But mujhe bhi planning sunna hai.

Adi: Pihu ke room se humein call kar lena. Chachu is right. Pihu already bahut pareshan hai aur humein use protect karna hai.

Romi: Bhabhi kaisi hai?

Kiran: Room mein baithi hui hai. Kisi se baat nahin karna chahti.

Romi: Main unse milkar aata hun phir ek idea hai woh batata hoon. Baki aap bhi socho- most importantly yeh socho ki ring ceremony mein aisa kya karein ki woh dono ek dusre ko ring pehna hi nahi paye.

While everyone is thinking of ideas Romi goes to meet Ishita. He comes back after 5 minutes and tells them that Ishita just wants to be left alone. By then Ruhi has joined them on call and everyone starts planning ways to ruin the engagement.

February 8th 2018:

Bhalla House:

The house is buzzing with activity since early morning. Because the decision to have an engagement ceremony was taken just the previous evening there was no time to book a fancy venue. So Simmi decided to use the apartment community hall. Param had managed with great difficulty to find some caterer for food and snacks the previous evening.

Pihu walks in dressed in her school uniform with Ruhi. She ignores all the activities happening in the house and goes sits on the dining table. Ruhi quickly goes into the kitchen and gets a bowl of cornflakes each for Pihu and herself.

Toshi and Raman who are overseeing arrangements in the drawing room notice Pihu and go sit on the dining table next to her. Pihu ignores both of them and silently eats her breakfast.

Toshi: Pihu! Puttar ek kam kar..aaj school mat ja. Dekh Papa aur Mihika ki aaj engagement hai. Tu humein help karegi na puttar sab tayaari mein?

Pihu gives them a deaf ear.

Raman: Mummy main kya soch raha tha aaj main Pihu ke choice ke kapde pehnunga. Aur Pihu ke liye toh aaj sabse special dress aana chahiye. In fact sare functions mein Pihu ke liye sabse special dresses hone chahiye.

Toshi: Haan Puttar! Yeh changa gal kiya tune! Puri shaadi mein sabse pyaari toh hamari Pihu hi lagegi. Arey log Pihu ko dekhkar Mihika ko dekhna bhul jayenge itni soni lagegi meri bacchi!

Pihu looks at Ruhi. Ruhi adds some more milk in her cornflakes bowl and Pihu resumes eating.

Raman: Pihu beta... Papa shaadi sirf aapke liye kar rahe hain. Papa chahte hai aapko mummy mil jaye. Aur Mihika toh tumse kitna pyaar karti hai aur tum bhi use kitna pasand karti ho just like mother-daughter. Please Pihu beta Papa se baat toh karo. Itne dino se tumne papa se koi baat nahi ki aur time bhi spend nahin kiya. Papa misses you a lot princess.

Pihu: Ruhi Didi aap Mr. Raman Kumar Bhalla se keh do ki aaj se mere koi Papa nahin hai. So agar Mr. Bhalla kisi se shaadi karte bhi hai toh woh meri mumma nahi hongi. Aaj se Pihu akeli hai- 2 years main hostel mein akeli thi so mujhe akele rehna aur sab kuch karna bhi aata hai. Mujhe na nai mummy ki aur na hi apne purane Papa ki koi zaroorat hai. Aur Pihu Mr. Bhalla ke shaadi ka koi function attend nahi karegi. Aur jab Mr. Bhalla apne liye khud ek new wife choose kar sakte hai toh surely woh apne clothes bhi khud choose kar sakte hai. Mera breakfast ho gaya aur mere school ka time bhi.

Ruhi: Come Pihu. Aaj main tumhein drop bhi karungi aur baad mein pick up bhi.

Raman: Pihu...beta...listen to Papa...

Pihu takes her school bag and walks off with Ruhi.

Toshi: Abhi thodi naraaz hai puttar lekin dheere dheere samajh jayegi...tu chinta na kar...sab thik ho jana hai...

Raman: Maa yeh shaadi sirf main Pihu ke liye kar raha hoon. Agar Pihu hi mujhse door ho gai toh... dekha aapne woh keh rahi hai ki main uska Papa nahin hoon...Mr. Bhalla bula rahi hai mujhe...jab se maine shaadi karne ka faisla liya hai Pihu ne mujhse baat tak nahin ki hai...

Simmi: Bhai maine kaha na...starting mein resist karegi...after all use lag raha hai ki use apne Papa ko share karna hoga...but ek baar shaadi ho gai na aur woh dekhegi ki aisa nahi hai phir woh khud samajh jayegi...aur Mihika uska dil jeet legi...already kitna pyaar hai dono mein...sab thik hoga...aap bus shadi pe concentrate karo...

Raman sighs hoping that Simmi is right. He decides to get dressed and step out for a bit and maybe buy Pihu a gift. But there is so much preparation to do that there is no time... before he knows it it is almost time for the engagement.

He goes up to his room to get dressed. Once he is alone in his room he feels restless and agitated. He looks at himself in the mirror and tells himself it's because Pihu has distanced herself from him but his reflection in the mirror is shouting back at him and saying no it's because he has distanced himself from Ishita. Frustrated because he is feeling like this Raman goes into the bathroom and goes turns on the shower and stands under the cold water. He takes a few deep breaths as the cold water soaks him and his clothes. Once he is calm he grabs a towel and dries himself enough so that water isn't dripping from his clothes. Once he is back in his room he turns on the tv to a random channel and increases the volume as if trying to block himself from hearing his own thoughts and he quickly gets dressed.

Apartment Community Hall:

Because the engagement was planned less than 24 hours ago there wan't any time to invite guests so it was just the Bhallas, Iyers minus Ishita, Shagun and Mani who were present. The Bhallas welcomed the Iyers with much enthusiasm.

Toshi: Ye dekho kal jo Madhavi aa ke Mihika ko lecture de rahi thi aaj khud chalke aai hai use aashirwaad dene! Girgit ke tarah rang badalte hai in madrasiyoon ke toh!

Madhavi: Aiyo Santoshi... is galat fehmi mein mat raho ki main yahan Mihika ke liye aai hun... usse ab hamara koi wasta nahi...main Raman ke liye aai hun...usko kuch yaad nahi hai toh kya hua maine usko saloon pehle apna beta man liya tha...usi ke bolne pe aai hun...

Before Toshi can reply Mandhavi walks away. Adi and Aliya are standing very close to Param and following him everywhere. However he is so engrossed in getting things organised that he does not notice that he is being followed.

Bala looks at Romi and gives him a thumbs up. After a while Adi and Aliya come and wink at Romi, Bala and Kiran. They smile mischievously.

Shagun: Romi yeh kya chal raha hai?

Romi: Bus dekhti jao. Yeh shaadi toh hum kisi hal mein hone nahin denge. Simmi di itni aasani se Bhai-Bhabhi ko alag nahi kar payengi.

Shagun: Arey please mujhe bhi batao na... main bhi help karungi...

Romi is about to tell Shagun but just then Mihika and Raman arrive at the venue. Mihika is dressed in an elegant pink and golden lehenga. Raman is wearing a grey suit.

Toshi: Raman tune kurta pajama nahin pehna? Koi gal nahin... but phir bhi changa lag raha hai...

Simmi quickly goes to Raman and Mihika and makes them sit on the stage.

Raman eyes are wandering everywhere as he is looking for someone. Adi notices this.

Adi: Dekho Aliya. Papa kitne restless hai.

Aliya: I know. Aise kya dhoondh rahein hai?

Adi: Kya nahin...kise dhoondh rahe hain...

Aliya: Amma? Unko seriously lagta hai ki kal jo hua uske baad Amma yahan ayengi?

Adi: Woh khud jante hai ki woh nahi ayengi par phir bhi unka dil Ishimaa ko hi dhoondh raha hai.

Simmi: Kya hua bhai? Idhar udhar kya dekh rahe ho?

Raman: Woh...Pihu...Pihu kahan hai?

Ruhi: Woh nahi ayegi Mr. Bhalla. Maine use kaha par usne mana kar diya.

Raman: Par ghar se toh last main aur Mihika nikle the...wahan bhi nahi thi.

Ruhi gives Raman a look and he immediately understands that Pihu is with Ishita.

Part of him wants to scold Ruhi for letting Pihu go but another part of him knows that no matter how hard anyone would have tried Pihu would still have chosen to be with Ishita over being here at his engagement.

Simmi: Yeh aurat na...

Mihika: Rehne do Simmi. Dekho bacchi pe zabardasti karne se kuch nahi hoga. Usse infact aur zada lagega ki koi uski feelings ko nahin samajhta. Already woh Raman se ukhdi hui hai... agar hum use space nahin denge toh woh baki sab se bhi naraaz ho jayegi. Waise bhi I think yeh meri responsibility hai ki main uske kareeb jaun uski mummy banke. Main baad mein dekh lungi. Abhi woh jahan hai wahin rehne do.

Simmi comes and whispers to Mihika: Yeh kya bol rahi ho?

Mihika (also whispering): Samjho Simmi. Yahan aa gai toh rona dhona aur natak kar ke woh kahin engagement hi na rukwa de. Raman waise bhi use pareshan nahi dekh pate. Sab chod ke Pihu ko sambhalne mein lag jayenge. Jab tak shaadi nahi ho jati use dheel de do. Uske bad main kas dungi.

Simmi nods and walks off the stage.

Toshi: Chalo sab rasam shuru karte hain!

Toshi comes on stage and does Aarti and Tika for both Raman and Mihika.

Toshi: Chal oye Simmi. Rings kahan hai?

Param: Mere pass hai Mummy Ji. Main aaj khud Tanishq gaya tha aur maine rings kharide hai dono ke liye.

Param hands over one box each to Raman and Mihika. The both open the box and look very confused.

Raman: Yeh kya hai Param?

Param: Kyun? Design pasand nahi aya kya? Arey Raman Bhai abhi ke liye yeh pehna do. Waise bhi ab toh puri life padi hai- Mihika ko rings gift karne ke aur bhi mauke ayenge tab aap apne pasand ka koi ring de dena.

Mihika: Nahi woh baat nahin hai...yeh kya le aye aap...yeh rings nahi..toe-rings hai!!

Param and Simmi: Kya?!?

Simmi comes and checks.

Simmi: Haan Param Ji yeh toh toe rings hain.

Param: Arey maine rings hi kharide the. Ek miunte mere pass bill bhi hai.

Param takes out his wallet and pulls out a bill.

Param: Yeh kya...toe ring ka bill?!?

While all the Bhallas are looking confused at each other Aliya, Adi and Ruhi are secretly giving each other low fives.

Flashback to a few hours ago:

Param informs Simmi that he is going to buy rings. Adi follows him closely in another car. He watches Param buy the rings and then clicks a picture of the ring box. Once Param leaves Adi goes to the same shop and buys two hideous looking toe rings and asks them to pack it in the same ring boxes that Param had got for the rings.

Adi and Aliya had been following Param non-stop ever since he got back home. When Param went to the washroom to get ready for the engagement Adi snuck into his room and switched out the boxes. He then also replaced the bill in Param's wallet. After that too Adi and Aliya kept following Param everywhere just to make sure that he does not get a chance to check the rings.

Flashback ends.

Simmi: Ab engagement kaise hogi?

Mihika: Ek minute Simmi... main abhi aai.

Mihika walks out of the community hall and after a few minutes she comes back. She goes to Raman and shows him two threads in her hand.

Mihika: Raman matlab toh rishta judne se hai na phir chahe woh ring pehna ke ho ya koi aur rasam nibha ke. Yeh dhaage main hamare ghar ke mandir se lai hoon-aap mere writst pe baandh do aur main aapko baandh dungi.

Raman nods appreciatively and ties a thread on her wrist and Mihika does the same.

A few people start clapping. Raman goes blank as in his mind a few blurry images flash in quick succession.

Raman: Mihika yeh pehle bhi hua hai kya?

Mihika: Kya?

Raman: Ki engagement pe ring nahi ho? Mujhe aisa lag rahi hai ki yeh ho chuka hai par kuch clearly yaad nahi aa raha...

Before Mihika has a chance to answer him Simmi and Param come on stage to congratulate them followed by Raman's parents. No one else comes up to congratulate them. Mihika and Raman go to Madhavi and Vishwa and touch their feet. Both of them don't utter a word but put their hands on Raman's head blessing him and completely ignore Mihika.

Param: Mubarak ho sabko ho gai sagai! Ab chaliye kuch khaana pina ho jaye. Khane ka arrangement hall ke dusri taraf hai. Chaliye sab.

Everyone follows Param and they are all pleasantly surprised when they see that the setup for the meal is in traditional Tamilian style just like it was set up during Raman and Ishita's engagement.

Simmi: Param Ji yeh kya hai?

Param: Maine toh yeh sab karne ko nahi kaha tha.

Just then the caterer comes and welcomes them.

Param: Yeh sab kya hai? Maine toh Punjabi style aur Punjabi khana bola tha.

Caterer: Par Sir kal raat ko hi toh aapka phone aya tha ki sab kuch Tamilian style mein hona chahiye.

Param: Par maine...

Raman: It's ok Param. Actually I like it- engagement hamare riwazoon ke hisab se aur khana Mihika ke hisab se. A little bit of both. It's good. Chalo let's eat.

Bala and Romi looked at each other and winked.

Flashback to previous evening at Iyer House.

Bala: Haan Romi toh kya idea hai tumhara?

Romi: Basically humein aise situations create karne hai ki Bhai ko cheezein yaad aane lage. Ab engagement toh yeh Punjabi rasmon se kar rahein hai. But aap sab ko yaad hai Bhai ke engagement pe hum sab ne zameen pe baith kar patoon wale plate mein typical Tamilian khana khaya tha?

Bala: Of course yaad hai.

Romi: Mere pass us caterer ka number hai jise Param ne bus abhi abhi hire kiya hai. Hum use Param banke call karke bolenge ki ab Punjabi nahi but Tamilian style mein khana hoga kyunki ladki wahan se hai. Mere pas ek photo hai us din ke setup ki. Aur main chup chap Param ka phone bhi le aya hun. Issi se call karenge aur usko picture bhi isi ke number se bhejenge taki woh bilkul waisi hi arrangements kare. Aur agar kisi ko exact khane ka menu yaad ho us din ka toh hum same dishes bhi banwa sakte hain.

Madhavi: Mujhe yaad hai. Main tumhe paper pe likh ke deti hun phir tum caterer ko wahin banane ko bolna.

Bala: Excellent plan Romi! Hopefully isse Raman ko kuch yaad aa jayega.

Flashback Ends.

They all sit on the floor. While Raman is waiting to be served once again a blurry image flashes in his mind.

Raman has this unsettling feeling that this has happened before. But before he can ask anyone food is being served and everyone is busy talking to each other. Raman shrugs off the feeling and eats his dinner quietly.

After dinner everyone leaves. Raman is also about to go back when he remembers Pihu.

Raman: Ruhi, please Pihu ko ghar le aao.

Adi: Actually Sir, Ishita Ji Pihu ko dinner ke liye bahar le gai hai.

Simmi: Dekha Bhai phir bina bataye...

Adi: Puri bat sun lijiye meri please! Sir ne apna phone mujhe diya tha kyunki woh engagement ke dauran disturb nahin hona chahte the. Jab engagement chal raha tha Ishita Ji ka call aya tha inform karne ko. Unhone uske bad Sir aapko immediately message bhi kiya hai taki aapko pata ho ki Pihu kahan hai. Infact every now and then woh aapko updates bhej rahi hai. Aap khud hi dekh lo...
