...
Zaki coloured his Apple red making sure it didn't cross the line. Then he turned the page and wrote alphabets in bold and capital, making sure they didn't look messy. Who said being a four year old was easy? He had so much to do. But, adults didn't understand that, they always thought being a child was simple. It wasn't though. Zaki was unlike other kids, he knew his duties and fulfilled them with utter perfection. Even while doing homework, his whole attention was on how to make his answers perfect. His mother usually told him that he was too responsible for a four year old. However today, his attention was somewhere else.
Colouring his drawing he asked his mother what was troubling him for some days, "Ammi what is honeymoon?"
Zara who was busy packing Zaki's school bag, looked at her son in surprise. "Zaki how did you come across this word?"
"You know daadi jaan was saying how she plans to send Alina phoopi and her husband on a honeymoon. I didn't understand what honeymoon was and why would daadi jaan want to send phoopi to honeymoon?"
Zara shook her head but before she could answer the innocent question, a childish voice answered, "oh Zaki you're so silly!"
Zara looked around to find her daughter with her hands on her hips shaking her head at her twin brother. Unlike Zaki, her daughter was not a fan of studies and neither had the good habit of taking care of her things. All she wanted was to play and chatter around. And being the youngest and the only girl child of the house, it was not a lie that she was pampered.
"So Kabira you know what's honeymoon?" Zara asked amused at her daughter. Thou naughty and mischievous, Kabira was smart and it wouldn't surprise Zara if her daughter knew answer to the question. However she didn't.
"Yes Ammi. Honey means sehed, the one daadi pours into our milk every morning." Kabira made a pout before continuing,"And moon means chaand, eid wala. So when moon is dipped into honey, its called honeymoon!"
Zara looked at her daughter, who seemed proud of her own definition of honeymoon, before bursting into laughter. She pinched her daughter's cheek.
"No my little princess. Honeymoon is not moon dipped in honey. It's like a vacation."
"Why don't we go on a honeymoon the?" Zaki asked confused.
"Because only married couple go on honeymoon. It's like a vacation for newly married couple."
"So did you and abbu also go on a honeymoon?" Kabira asked curiously as her eyes shone with excitement.
"Yes we did. We went to Kashmir. The one we went on holiday last year, do both of you remember?"
"Of course Ammi! We are four year old, not babies. I don't know about Zaki but I remember everything, I don't have the habit of forgetting things." Kabira stated proudly.
"Says the person who forgot to take her bag to school! "Kabir entered the scene. He looked towards his daughter and tried to look at her sternly but failed miserably looking at her innocent deer eyes that were exactly like her mother's.
"But aba, it was not my fault. I'm so small, how can I remember a big thing such as bag?" Kabira said in a small voice, making a puppy face at her father. And it didn't take a moment for Kabir to melt. Zara shook her head at the scene. Kabir would never admit, but he was wrapped around Kabira's little finger.
"Ammi you were saying about your honeymoon!" Zaki called anxious to hear the story.
"Oh yes the honeymoon! Did I tell you both how much trouble your Abu gave me!" Zara said with a sigh, hinting on all the troubles they had due to Kabir's eating habit.
"Oh right, I gave trouble! Cause I was the one who got kidnapped too right?" Kabir chimed in.
"Kidnapped? Who got kidnapped?" Kabira asked suddenly much more interested in the story.
"What's kidnapped?" Zaki asked out coming acorss a word that was once again not familiar to him.
"Oh Zaki! You're so silly!" Kabira said laughing. "Kid means a child and nap means those afternoon sleep that Ammi makes us take. So when a kid takes a nap in the afternoon, its called kidnapped!"
"You carry a different dictionary than us my dear Habibti!" Kabir said in between his chuckles as Zara giggled from behind.
Kabira huffed and crossed her arms in irritation that her parents were making fun of her. "Continue on please Ammi. Who got kidnapped?"
"How about we leave the honeymoon stories and I tell you an interesting story about a princess and her Prince?"
"Yes please!"both of the children agreed excitedly.
"So there was this princess who once went to visit the beautiful mountains. But while there she was captured by a evil Dragon who went and locked up her in a tower." Zara narrated.
"What happened then Ammi?"
"Yes Zara, tell them what happened, tell them how her amazing and strong Prince came as the knight in shining armour and fought with the Dragon and saved the damsel in distress!" Kabir stated proudly while Zara shook her head, blushing hard.
"Like your Abu said, a Prince came and saved his princess and fought with the Dragon without caring about his own life. And then they lived happily ever after! Story finished" Zara hurriedly said as both of her children clapped their hands in joy.
"But Ammi we were talking about your honeymoon how come princess and Prince were a part of the story?"
"Oh Zaki! You're so silly! Prince is Abu and princess is Ammi. Right Abu? "Kabir shyly nodded his head at his daughter'question.
"But how did you come across a Dragon? When we went to Kashmir there were no dragons!" Kabira expressed her confusion.
Kabir opened his mouth and shut again. This was what his daughter always did to him. Left him with no answers. Maulvi Kabir Ahmed was left speechless each time his daughter opened her mouth.
Instead of answering the question, he went near to his wife and wrappin a arm around her waist whispered in her ears, "Who knew our honeymoon would turn out to be such a good story for the children? You know what? We should go on another honeymoon. You know just for the sake of another story?"
"And start writing a honeymoon diary Maulvi Saab?"
