Chapter 4
Om tucked his rolls of paper securely under one arm and carried his art supplies in the other as he followed Brijesh to the Raja's study. After his encounter with Gauri early this morning in the garden, he hadn't seen her. The women folk ate after the men so she was not at the breakfast table. He had hoped to see her at the morning aarti to apologize to her if he had offended her in some way, but had been disappointed to find out that the Panditji was performing the aarti and not Gauri. His thought process halted as they stopped in front of the Kaali Thakur's study. Om recognized the room from some of the other portraits he had seen in the hallway. Apparently, this was a popular spot for the Maharajas to have their painting made. "Om! Please come in, Kaali Thakur ushered Om in and asked him to take a seat. Om set his supplies carefully down on the large mahogany desk and took his seat. He quickly looked around to take stock of the lighting in the room and where he would want Kaali Thakur positioned to be able to get the right kind of light. "If I understand correctly, you are just going to do outline sketches today, right? Kaali Thakur asked. "That's right Thakurji. I'll just be doing sketches for the first couple of days. I'll start with the face because that's what normally takes the longest. Once the face comes out right, the rest should be relatively easier, Om explained.
As Om pulled out a blank sheet to start the basic sketches, a thought occurred to him and he turned back to Kaali Thakur, "Thakurji, did you want your portrait to be in your kingly avatar or the more common man avatar like that of Raja Bharmal Singh? Kaali Thakur's eyes darkened with something akin to anger but it was there for a mere fleeting second. So fleeting that Om wondered if he had imagined it. "A king has to follow the traditions, doesn't he? If not, how can he expect his people to have faith in him that he is the true heir, Kaali Thakur said as he sat down. Om was puzzled by Kaali Thakur's reply. What did he even mean by what he said? Om wondered. Realizing that it was probably Kaali Thakur's way of avoiding the topic, Om decided not to pursue the matter, for the time being. Of course, once the sketch of the face was complete, he would need a more straightforward answer and he would get one then too. With that thought in mind, Om picked up a piece of charcoal from his art kit and started sketching. Slowly, every other thought evaporated from his mind as his art engulfed him.

"Gauri
At the sound of her mother's voice, Gauri closed the book she had been pretending to read and went to greet her mother.
"Why weren't you at aarti this morning? Even Babasa was asking about you, Jahnvi asked, lovingly caressing Gauri's cheek.
"I.. Actually, Maasa.. I.. I overslept, Gauri lied. She sent a quick silent apology to her Shankarji for lying. How could she tell her mother that she felt way too flustered around that artist? That she wouldn't be able to perform the aarti with devotion and sincerity knowing that he was watching her. Just the thought of him brought heat to her cheeks. She was afraid she'd make a fool of herself in front of everyone with the way she reacted to him.
"You overslept? Jahnvi asked, completely surprised. "Are you feeling okay? Your cheeks are kind of flushed. Do you have a fever? Jahnvi touched Gauri's forehead worried. "That's strange. Your cheeks are all warm and red but you have no fever. Do you want me to call the palace physician so he can take a look at you? "No Maasa! I am fine, Gauri said quickly. "I am fine. I was just up late reading last night.
"You are such a bookworm! Jahnvi commented. "Don't you ever get tired of burying your nose in books? "My books are my only window to the outside world Maasa. I've never been outside of Ratangarh and the only friend I have is Richa. Even when I went to college, everyone maintained that respectable distance from me because I am the princess. These books are my escape to the world where I have no restrictions and limitations, Maasa, Gauri explained.
Jahnvi knew Gauri wasn't complaining or anything but as a mother, her heart ached for her daughter. What she said was true. Though Gauri had never been denied anything be it her desire to go to college, or learn sword fighting, or learn the ancient history of their family it was true that she had not lived the life of a normal girl. Her friends had always been her maids and once she had grown old enough to understand, Gauri had willingly let go of all of them so they could pursue an education for themselves. She had even talked Raja Sahib into sponsoring their education. Only Richa, her ever loyal friend, had refused to leave her side. So Gauri had taken it upon herself to educate Richa. Gauri had gone to the local college for her graduation where everyone, from the lecturers to the staff had treated her with polite respect. Despite the fact that the Raja Sahib was a progressive man and did not place any restrictions on Gauri being friends with anyone from a different caste or religion, man or woman just the fact that she was the crown princess came in the way of her ever being able to form a real, no-holds-barred friendship with anyone.
"Well, maybe you should get your nose out of your book and go out into the world, Jahnvi said. Gauri frowned as she tried to decipher what her mother was trying to say. "You know Babasa is hosting that painter from Mumbai? Jahnvi asked. Gauri felt her heart stop for a whole second before it started thudding again. "Well, Babasa has asked me to make sure that he is well taken care of and entertained. They should be done with their sketching session before noon and I was thinking it would be a great idea for you to show him around, Jahnvi explained.
"Me? Gauri asked, swallowing nervously.
"Why not? Well, ideally, we would have had Brijesh or someone else accompany him but you know Babasa is going on a tour of the villages to hold court and address their issues. So his entourage is going with him. I wouldn't know what to talk to a city bred young man and he would be bored to death by my company. You, on the other hand, are the perfect match for him, Jahnvi commented.
Gauri's eyes widened in shock at what her mother said. Perfect match? Did her mother just say the jatadhari artist would be a perfect match for her?
"Gauri! Jahnvi placed a hand on Gauri's shoulder and gently shook her. "Are you sure you are okay? You seem a little.. lost.
"Uh.. Umm.. What? Gauri asked, trying to get rid of the image in her head of how perfectly she might fit in the jatadhari's arms. Her mother was right, at least on that account. Their height difference was just perfect so that when he took her in his arms, her head could rest perfectly against his beating heart. Wait, what? What was she thinking?
"I.. I don't think that is a good idea, Gauri finally managed to say.
"What isn't a good idea, Rajkumarisa? Richa asked as she came into Gauri's room. She greeted Jahnvi and turned to Gauri.
"Richa! Achcha hua tum aa gayi, Jahnvi said. "I was telling Gauri that she should take our guest on a tour of our kingdom, or what used to be our kingdom.
Richa's eyes lit up with mischief at the mention of the palace guest. "Arey Ranisa! That's a great idea. Rajkumarisa was telling me just yesterday that its been so long she hasn't stepped out of the palace. This would be the perfect opportunity for her to go out. Kyun Rajkumarisa?
Gauri shook her head vehemently as Richa winked at her. Jahnvi smiled at Gauri, "Gauri beta, there is nothing to be so shy about. You know how you were just saying that your books are your only window to the world outside Ratangarh? Maybe this is your chance. You have someone here who comes from a world that is so entirely different from yours. He is not from here. He is not bound by obligation to see you as princess. Maybe he can be your one true friend apart from Richa.
Friend? Would she ever be able to see him as just as friend? Gauri wondered. The sparks between them had been so instantaneous, the possibility of anything else had evaded her completely. Maybe it was worth a shot, she decided. At least she would know if there was anything more to what was between them than a physical attraction.
Making up her mind, Gauri said, "Theek hai Maasa. If that is what you want, I will take our guest sightseeing.
"Good, I will go tell Om to be ready, Jahnvi said, patting Gauri's cheek lovingly before heading out the door.
Once she was away from earshot, Jahnvi let out a deep breath, then she raised her eyes heavenward to the almighty powers and said a quick prayer, "I am doing what I can, Devi Maa. Now its all in Your hands. Meri beti ki zindagi ka sawaal hai. Uski Raksha karna!
