I heard you are getting into politics?
Mmm...Yes.

When are you planning to take the plunge?
In two or three years.

But the last time you said...
Actually I don't know, may be now.

What do you know about politics?
Nothing!

Then why are you getting into it?
My father wants me to.

Why does he want you to get into it?
Because his brother, that is my uncle, was an M.L.A.

You can't jump into something like politics only because your father wants you to.
I do everything that my parents want me to.

What will you do if you win the elections, how will you go about it in the parliament?
I will seek advice from my father. After all, every politician has an adviser.

What would you do if you became the Prime Minister?
I'll never become.

What if you did?
In our country, some people are rich and some are poor. I will see to it that everyone becomes equal.

How do you propose to do it?
I don't know.

I also heard that you are building a five-star hotel?
The building is already under construction but it's not a five-star.

Is it a three-star?
I don't know, ask my mother.

What do you plan to do after your film career is over?
want to settle down in abroad' (Then adding hastily) But my mother does not like the idea.

Why do you want to settle down there?
So that I can have ice-creams and milk-shakes and watch movies.

Don't you have ice-creams and watch movies in Bombay and Madras?
In Bombay, I have no time to do anything, and in Madras, I only sit at home and watch TV (she meant the idiot box.)

When do you plan to get married?
I don't know.

What kind of a man would you like to marry?
(A glazed look and a five-minute long pause)

Should he be ntelligent, understanding...?
No, no. I'm not such a complex person.

Should he be handsome?
Naturally!

Should he be wealthy?
I have lots of money.

Your husband may not like to be called Sridevi's husband'?
But that is only natural.

How much time do you give yourself in the industry?
Ask my mother.

Why are you so dependent on your parents? Why don't you make your own decisions some times?
They are experienced. They know more than me.

But aren't you old enough to make your own decisions?
No.

When will you start making decisions?
When I have children, I'll make decisions for them.

Don't you have any friends?
I don't allow anyone near me.

Why?
I don't trust anyone in the industry.

There must be at least someone in the industry who you like?
Yes, Amala(Southern actress) ! She is very sweet to me.

Who is your favourite co-star?
Kimi Katkar.

What do you like about her? Her sense of humour?
I don't know. She doesn't crack jokes with me but she talks nicely with me. And whenever we are shooting at the same studio, she drops in and has lunch with me.

Who is your favourite male co-star?
Everyone!

Who are you most comfortable working with?
Anil Kapoor.

Why?
Because he talks a lot! And he takes great interest in discussing the scene before the shot.

I believe you do a lot of charity?
Yes.

What do you do?
Ask my mother... I give pens and books to the blind on my birthday.

Pens and books to the blind'?!
Yes, some I distribute in schools in Andhra Pradesh and some in Madras. I also give lunch to the deaf and blind on my birthday.

Do you find male company interesting?
I don't know.

Any particular attractive guy you would like to date, go out with?
Sylvester Stallone!

Have you met him?
No!

Do you want to meet him?
No!

Why?
Just...

Have you ever been out on a date?
No, no, that happens only in films. We are conservative people.

Suppose you meet someone attractive on a plane, would you go across and say hello'?
I sleep in planes.

If someone asked you out, would you go?
If I do, my family will also come along.

As I left Mehboob Studios, Bandra, where I had had the pleasure of meeting
the most sought-after heroine of the decade, Miss Sridevi, I was even more jumbled than when I had entered the studio floor. I couldn't decide what was more outrageous, what I had heard about this extraordinary lady or what I had just witnessed. As I got into the rickshaw, I was an even more twined, twirled and twisted knot. Phew!

😆 Na hi intelligent or understanding, na hi handsome ya wealthy. Mila toh 2 bachcho ka baap fanny pack tummy wala Boney.

BTW she was married to Mithun from 85 to 88. In 88 she was in her mid 20s but she sounds like a dumb teenager here.

Urmila's character in Mast was inspired by Sridevi.

I actually felt sad reading that. Whatever her choices were in life she was screwed over by those who were meant to support and love her. A child should be a child not made to act to feed the family

Clearly they controlled her every move and limited her education.

People who abuse sridevi and call her names for marrying boney should read this interview first ..She was way too immature or dumb to decide anything in her life.Once her parents passed away(around 1993) even her siblings left her and her carrier started going downhill. If not for boney she would have killed herself . Everyone from her parents to boney used her and not the other way round.

Q: Judging by your emotional responses, yes. Obviously you look like a full blown woman but the fact that the only ones you can bring yourself to trust are your parents and sister indicate a frightened, clinging child, not a mature person. Why is it that you instinctively distrust everyone? Why are you afraid to love?

Sridevi: There are many reasons. Basically, I suppose these are the after effects of growing up in the studios, like you said. Normally, children benefit from attending school, mixing freely with other children and all that, whereas I did not get that opportunity. There was only Srilata, my sister to fight or play with. That is not the same as being with children from different homes because there you learn to adjust whereas on the sets, I was pampered. You see, I was always the baby in the unit. I was playing the girlfriend or wife of very much older heroes like NTR. (Like that Tamil film which I told you about where I was married to Rajnikant's father!). Pampered like a kid by my seniors, doted on by father... I remained basically like a child.

Moreover, how does any child grow to maturity. Either you learn from books or from life, isn't it? Life has been too kind to me. On top of that, my parents protected me absolutely. I was not left alone even for a minute. I think it is very important for a young girl in this industry to have the strong backing of her family otherwise if you are not knowing anything you can fall into the wrong hands, then what?

I am lucky that I did not need anyone else because my parents were always there to look after me. I don't have any friends. See, it's not that I distrust everybody but if my parents would leave me alone for any reason I used to feel very lost. Even it's not true that I have no emotions. I'm emotional about my family. That is why I was totally shattered by my father's death. You say that I do not feel like a woman. Well, I too want to get married and raise kids. No need to waste emotions before the right man comes along. Why am I afraid to love? (Falls silent).

Feel really sad for her..she was so naive. All she wanted was to have icecream and milk shake and lead a simple life.. sadly she never got that..lost her childhood and innocence..
She liked Amla and Kimi Katkar bcoz they talked to her nicely..like talking to her nicely was such a big thing for her. Wonder how others or her family treated her.
Life taught her many lessons..she matured and her expectations from a husband also changed..hope she is in a happy space now
