Chapter 52 - A Night to Remember

Preet and Meher strolled down the scenic lanes of Kasauli, along with the few other tourists there. They stopped briefly to take pictures of the mist covered Himalayas in the background, as well as one of themselves standing before the statue of the Indian field hockey legend Major Dhayan Chand. They continued on their way to the Heritage Market on Mall Road. The street was lined with shops and eateries.

"So, what do you want to eat?" Preet turned to Meher and asked.

"Anything," Meher shrugged her shoulders. "I'm too hungry to be picky right now."

"There is a Fast Food Corner up there," Preet pointed to a shop nearby. "We can grab something from there really quick, and then have a sit down meal at another place up ahead."

"Okay," agreed Meher. She followed him to the eatery, where they each ordered a burger. They decided to eat while walking, but it wasn't long before a stray dog started following them. "Preet! There's a dog right behind us." She clung to his arm as the dog barked at her.

"Hey you! Get lost!" A shopkeeper shouted at the dog. He picked up a pebble and threw it at the animal. "Stop bothering the customers!"

The dog dodged the stone and ran whimpering to one side.

"It's okay Meher, you don't have to be frightened," Preet patted her hand. "It's just a hungry stray. You'll see a lot of them around here along with the monkeys." He took a few steps towards the dog then broke his remaining burger into pieces and tossed it to him. Two other hungry strays immediately joined him.

"Kya Saab, aap bhi na," complained the shop keeper. "These dogs are just a nuisance."

"Don't you listen to him Preet," Meher smiled at his sweet act of kindness, and tossed her food at the dogs too. "I think that was really sweet." She linked her arm with his and they continued to walk on through the market. They found plenty of shops selling warm clothing and blankets. They purchased outerwear suitable for the cold weather and put it on right away. They also made other clothing purchases. Preet was ready to go back to the summerhouse after that, but Meher wanted to explore the town further. There were lovely trails to walk through, and shops featuring Tibetan handicrafts, carpets, and items made from wood. She picked out some souvenirs for her family. In between shopping, they stopped to admire the architecture and stained glass at the Christ Church, then grabbed a bite to eat at Anand's Dhaba and enjoyed hot chocolate and snacks at Cafe Mantra.

Later...

Meher picked up a pair of earrings and held them up next to her ears. "What do you think about these Preet?" she asked as she simultaneously checked her reflection in the small mirror the shopkeeper had held up for her.

"They're nice," he replied Preet.

"You said that about the last three pairs too," complained Meher. "Are you even paying attention?"

"Yes, but come on Meher, they're just a pair of earrings," said Preet. "Pick anyone you like, or get them all. I mean, they all look good on you." He checked the time on his watch impatiently. This little stroll into town was taking forever. When were they going to get back to the cabin?

"What's the matter Preet?" asked Meher. "Why do you keep checking your watch?"

"I guess I'm kind of bored," admitted Preet. "Shopping has never really been my favorite activity, and we've been walking around for several hours."

"Oh," said Meher. "And you're tired? You want to sleep again?"

"No!" said Preet. No way was he going to fall asleep again! "I mean, if we stay out the whole time, when will we get to spend some time...alone?" He gave her a sheepish grin. "We can come back tomorrow if you like, but perhaps we should head back to the cabin now."

"Okay," said Meher. "I think I've got everything I needed anyway." Just then she spotted a phone booth. "Preet, the signals aren't so good up here. Would it be alright if I called my parents from here instead? I just want to let them know we're okay."

"Sure, why not?" said Preet.

Moments later...

Meher placed a call to her parents' home. "Hello, Papa-ji," she said happily into the phone as Blaraj answered.

"Meher Beta, how are you?" asked Balraj.

"Oh my Rabs! Is that Meher? Put the phone on speaker," Kuljeet cried as she raced to the phone. "Meher! Is everything alright? And Preet, how is he? Is he still with you?"

"Yes Kuljeet Ma," smiled Meher. "He's right here with me. Where else would he be?"

"Oh, I don't know," said Kuljeet. "You're married into the Juneja family. Who knew that would happen? It still seems like an impossible dream. Put Preet on will you?"

Meher gave Preet an apologetic look.

"Namaste Mr. and Mrs. Maan, said Preet as Meher handed him the phone. "I mean...Uncle ji...I mean...Papa...Papa-ji...Mom. Uh...how are you both?"

"Oh my Rabs! He called me mom!" Kuljeet chuckled in delight. "Imagine that! I'm a mother-in-law to a Juneja."

"Uh...yes...we're both much better now that you two have called," smiled Balraj. "May God watch over you both and keep you happy always."

"Thank you sir. Uh...I'll let you speak with Meher," said Preet. He handed the phone back to Meher, and motioned to her that he was going to get something from a nearby shop.

"Meher beta, are you really happy?" Balraj asked his daughter.

"What he means is...is Preet taking good care of you?" said Kuljeet.

"Yes Papa-ji," giggled Meher. "More than you can imagine. Preet is so wonderful and kind. We're in Kasauli."

"Kasauli?" said Kuljeet. "You mean he didn't take you to Switzerland or London?"

"Uff-ho Kuljeet! How could they go abroad on such short notice?" said Balraj. "Beside, there is no shortage of beautiful landscapes in India."

"That's right Papa-ji," agreed Meher. "You should see this place. It has gorgeous views of the Himalayas."

"But, what will I tell the girls in my Kittie party?" sighed Kuljeet.

"Kuljeet!" frowned Balraj.

"Don't Kuljeet me Balraj," said Kuljeet. "Don't forget, I was the one who stood up to my sister after these kids ran away."

"Mrs. Rampal? She was in touch with you?" Meher asked worriedly.

"You bet she was in touch with me," said Kuljeet. "She was mad as hell. She told us she'll never let you and Preet be together in peace, but don't you worry, I let her have it too. I mean, it's not our fault Preet chose our daughter over hers. Waise Meher, when are you guys coming back? You're going to invite us over to the Juneja mansion aren't you? I mean, they are our in-laws now. Acha, yeh Preet tumhay shopping kar raha hain ya nahin (has Preet taken you shopping or not)? Did you buy anything for your father and me by any chance?"

"Uh...Kuljeet Ma...I think I hear Preet calling me," lied Meher.

"But Meher," said Kuljeet.

"I have to go. I'll call you guys again real soon," said Meher. She hung up the phone then exhaled loudly. Daljeet Rampal! When was she going to get off their case? And who was she to threaten her relationship with Preet? She should talk to her two-timing daughter not her family. And Kuljeet, she was selfish as ever, but her standing up for her came as a pleasant surprise. Just then she saw Preet walking back towards her.

"Hey," he smiled. "I picked up some more food." He held up a bag with several neatly packed boxes in it.

"That's nice," said Meher.

"What's the matter Meher?" asked Preet. "Your phone call with your parents...everything was okay right?"

"Yes," said Meher.

"Then why the long face?" asked Preet.

"I don't know," sighed Meher. "My step-mother mentioned that she got into a fight with Mrs. Rampal, because she was saying that she wouldn't let us stay together."

"Wow! You're step-mother actually stood up for you?" said Preet. "That's wonderful!"

"Wonderful? What about what Daljeet said?" cried Meher.

"Who cares what Daljeet Rampal says or thinks?" Preet shrugged his shoulders. "She can't manipulate us. And once my brothers and I get done with them, the only place she and her crooked husband are going to be busy in is behind bars. So, don't you worry."

"If you say so," said Meher. Just then she noticed a shopping bag in Preet's other hand that she hadn't seen before.

"What's that?" she asked pointing to the bag.

"That is a surprise," said Preet.

"A surprise? For me?" said Meher.

Preet nodded and smiled.

"What is it?" asked Meher.

"Something really special," smiled Preet.

"Let me see," Meher reached out for it, but he stopped her.

"Na-ah! Not here Meher," he said. He took her hand in his and gave it a warm squeeze. "I'll show you once we get back to the summer house. Come on, let's go."

Later...

When Preet and Meher reached the cabin, the first thing they noticed was how neat and clean it looked. There was a fresh fire going in the fireplace too.

"Wow!" smiled Meher. "Are you sure this is the same place we came to last night?"

"Yes," laughed Preet. He took off his coat and helped Meher out of hers before putting them away in the hall closet. "Ramu Kaka and his team did a great job." He walked over to one of the bedrooms and peaked inside. A big smile appeared on his face. "Wait until you see what he did to this roo..." His voice trailed off as he saw Meher run out to the balcony excitedly.

"Preet take a look at this." She waved at him to join her. As the evening fell over Kasauli, the sky had become dotted with stars. Down below lights from the town twinkled like a blanket of lights. Preet joined her outside to admire the view. "It's so beautiful and peaceful too," she smiled. "Wouldn't it be nice to have dinner out here on the balcony?"

"Yeah, if only it wasn't so cold." Preet pulled her into a hug from behind. "Speaking of which, I know of a perfect way to get us warmed up."

"Me too," Meher smiled. She reached up and placed a hand on his cheek. "Dinner."

"Dinner?" said Preet.

"Yes. We had a nice long walk back up here, so you must have worked up an appetite. I know I sure did. I'll go heat up dinner," suggested Meher.

"Dinner," Preet sighed as he watched her walk back into the cabin.

He slowly walked back inside and headed straight for the fireplace. He threw a fresh log onto the fire, then helped Meher set the table. During dinner, he watched her chat animatedly, but his own replies were brief. Exposure to the cold weather had turned her cheeks rosier than they normally were. Did she even realize how pretty she looked? Her hair was pinned up into a neat little bun. He wondered how she would react if he suddenly reached out and raked his hands through her hair, pulling out each pin one by one and let her long brown hair fall open. Some of it would fall back and swing down her back, some would sweep over her shoulders, while the rest would fall forward down the curves of her front...Oh those curves! A smile twitched at the corner of his mouth as his gaze became fixed on her, mesmerized by the steady rise and fall of her bosom.

Meher caught him staring at her then smile to himself. Had she spilled something on her shirt? She looked down. Nothing. So, what was he staring at? She fidgeted in her seat. "Preet?" There was no response. "Preet! Tumhara dhayan kahan hai (What are you thinking about)?"

"Huhn?" Preet's eyes snapped back up.

"Is there a problem?" asked Meher.

"No," smiled Preet. He wiped his mouth with his napkin. "Uh...I mean, I'm done."

"Okay, I'll start clearing the dishes," said Meher.

"Just leave them Meher," said Preet. "We can take care of them later."

"Leave them?" said Meher. "But they're just a few plates. I'll have them washed in no time." She picked up the boxes of leftovers and put them in the fridge, then picked up the plates and took them to the sink. She had just started to wash them in hot soapy water, when she felt Preet come up behind her and put his hands in the water from around her waist. She giggled as he kissed her behind her ear. "Preet what are you doing?"

"Who me?" asked Preet. He rubbed his cheek against hers, kissed her in the crook of her neck, then placed another kiss on her shoulder. "This is what is known as bartan dhoney wala romance (dish washing romance)."

"What?" laughed Meher.

"Yeah, you know...it's what guys in a predicament like me wind up resorting to," sighed Preet.

"And what predicament is that?" asked Meher.

"The kind where their better half forgets that we just got married," explained Preet. "And that even though we are technically speaking on our honeymoon, we have yet to do anything honeymoon-ish."

"You mean, because the husband decided to fall asleep," teased Meher.

"Wait a minute," protested Preet. "That was due to circumstances beyond my control. I drove for 5 hours non-stop, remember?" He placed his hands on Meher's waist and turned her around to face him. "But I'm wide awake now."

"I see," smiled Meher. "And just what is it that you would like for us to do? Something...like this?" She put her arms around his neck, then never taking her eyes off his, inched her face slowly towards him, and kissed him on the cheek. "Or something...like this?"

Preet's heart beat faster than ever, as she inched towards him again, but this time he only felt a small splash of water on his face.

"Ha-ha!" chuckled Meher, as she darted from the sink back to the dining table. "Gotcha!"

"Why you...!" cried Preet, as he ran after her.

Meher stuck her tongue out at him then ran to the living room. Preet chased her around the sofa, before she made a run for one of the bedrooms. She stopped in her tracks as soon as she opened the door. The bed had crisp new sheets on it with rose petals spread out in the shape of a heart. The rest of the room was adorned with fresh flowers and scented candles, just like a cozy little honeymoon suite.

"How do you like my surprise?" Preet asked as he came up behind her.

"Oh Preet," sighed Meher. "It's beautiful! So this is what you wanted to discuss alone with Ramu Kaka."

"Yes," nodded Preet. "But that's not all. I've got another surprise for you." He went to the living room and picked out one of the bags they had brought back from the market. Meher recognized it as the surprise bag he had brought with him after she had finished speaking with her parents.

"I almost forgot about this. What's inside?" she asked as she took it from him.

"Go ahead and see for yourself," said Preet.

Meher opened the bag and found a fancy looking box inside. She smiled at Preet then lifted the lid off the box. Her expression immediately changed from one of joy to embarrassment. "It's uh...uh...," she stammered. It was a beautiful satin and lace slip in a deep red color. She slowly picked it up by the thin spaghetti straps, turned it around and saw the plunging open back. "Uh...where's the rest of it?"

"It's backless," Preet whispered in her ear.

Of course, it's backless. It had to be backless. Why would it have a back? One day some stupid French tailor was looking at his basket of scraps and said why throw these iddy biddy pieces of cloth out when I can make something to torture body conscious women in instead...and thus lingerie was invented. "...it's...nice." She quickly stuffed it back in the box and was about to put the lid back on when Preet stopped her.

"What are you doing Meher?" he asked. "You're supposed to put that on, not put it away."

"Preet," said Meher. She could feel herself blushing. "I never...I've never worn anything like this before."

He was already looking at her with a smile on his face. "I know," he said. "But I think it will look beautiful on you."

Really? Fat chance, thought Meher. Fat being the key word here. It had been ingrained into her mind by Kuljeet since childhood. Like...what the hell?! We couldn't get good phone signals up here in Kasauli but he had absolutely no trouble finding a lingere shop! She thought about the warm, full-length flannel nightgown she had picked out for herself, then looked up at Preet. He was still smiling at her in anticipation. Meaning there was no getting out of this one. Well, at least there was a matching robe to hide behind. She took a deep breath, picked up the box and reluctantly disappeared into the washroom.

Preet went back out to the living room where the shopping bags still lay and took out a pajama pant and T-shirt for himself. He took the clothes to the bedroom and changed into the pajama bottom. Was he really going to need the T-shirt? Nah! He decided against it and tossed it on a chair by the bed. He lit a few candles, turned down the bed covers, sat down on one edge of the bed and waited patiently for Meher to come out. He was going to spend the entire night making love to her. It was all he had thought about the entire day. If only she would come out of the washroom. "Meher, is everything alright?" He called out. "Do you need help?"

"No," Meher replied in a small voice. The bathroom door slowly opened, and she stepped out timidly into the room.

"Come over here, where I can see you," said Preet. When she didn't move, he laughed out loud. "Come on Meher, I'm not going to bite."

Keeping her gaze lowered, she slowly came over and stood before him. With trembling hands, she tugged at the gown and tried to cover her thighs, but there wasn't enough material to stretch. Preet smiled as she chewed her lower lip nervously. She always did that whenever she felt vulnerable. He slowly reached up into her hair and tugged loose a hair pin and tossed it onto the floor, and then another, and another until her long brown hair spilled down over his hands. His fingers found the knot to her robe and slowly loosened the ties. He pushed the satiny fabric over her shoulders to expose her tender skin, then took a step back. Like a soft caress, his eyes toured her face before running lazily down her body and back up again. His expression changed, his jaw tightened, and the muscle in his temple jumped.

Meher gulped. A light sweat broke out on her skin. Was it just her or had the temperature in the room suddenly risen? She tried to think of something to say but her mind refused to work, so she cleared her throat and then ever so casually, tried to draw the robe close around her.

Preet couldn't help but smile at her attempt at modesty. He shook his head and stopped her.

"Preet...," said Meher. Before she could even try to remember what it was she was going to say, he lifted his right hand and tucked her hair back over her ear. His fingers gently skimmed down her arms and circled her wrists and pulled her closer to him. Leaning in quickly as if not to waste the moment he brushed his lips against hers and kissed her softly as he backed her up towards the bed.

Meher felt the mattress come up against the back of her legs. She climbed onto the bed, then moved over to make room for Preet. As he sat down beside her the mattress jiggled. She moved over further, but so did he. She tried to scoot away further, but wound up falling off the bed instead. "Oops!" she said, as she climbed back up.

"What's gotten into you Meher?" chuckled Preet.

I'm embarrassed and scared as hell, thought Meher. "Uh...Nothing," she lied. "I'm fine."

Preet reached over and pulled her close to him then slipped her robe off and tossed it to one side. "God Meher...you are so beautiful," he said.

"I am?" she blushed.

Preet nodded. "Trust me...you're doing some major damage to my self-control here." As if to prove his point, he leaned forward and kissed her lips and then her neck, brushing fluttering little kisses all the way down to her shoulder.

She moaned in delight at the exquisite feel of his lips on her skin. Her pulse quickened as his hand trailed down the outside of her thigh and began to drag her dress up. Wait! What was he doing? Stop! Panic threatened to set in again, but quickly faded under the tingling sensations from his touch that promised to drive her mad. No...don't stop, she thought. He didn't. He continued to trace his fingertips up her thigh until they reached the crease where her bent leg met her hip bone. He slowly caressed her there with his thumb sending another wave of wild shivers throughout her body. Meher buried her head against his shoulder and ran her fingers down his back. She could feel his muscles ripple under her roaming fingers. God he felt wonderful! She brought one hand forward and slowly ran it down his chest, but he quickly caught it.

"You go any lower Cinderella, and I won't be of any use to you," whispered Preet.

Meher froze. She quickly pulled her hand back. She had no idea what she was doing.

"What's wrong?" asked Preet. "We can stop if you want."

"No...it's just that...I've never...," stammered Meher. "I'm sorry...I've...never done anything like his before."

"I know," smiled Preet.

"So...I...uh...may not exactly know what to do," blushed Meher.

"It's okay Meher," smiled Preet. "I know exactly what to do."

"Right...because you're obviously experienced," said Meher. "I guess that's good. I mean, at least one of us should know what to do."

Preet smiled and leaned towards her but she spoke up again. "So...uh...just...how experienced are you? I mean, were there a lot of...you know...other girls?"

"Really, Meher? Is this something you really want to get into right now? Or are you stalling," grinned Preet. He saw her nervously chew on her lower lip again. "How about if I told you that you're the only one I've ever loved Meher. You are the only one that will ever matter to me." He kissed her lightly on her nose, and a small giggle escaped her lips.

"I'm sorry," said Meher. "I guess I'm just a little nervous. And a little scared."

"It's okay. We'll take it slow," smiled Preet. He kissed her again then rubbed his nose down the side of her cheek. "But first, we need to get this off you." He tugged at her slip.

Meher crossed her arms over her chest defensively. "We do?" she gulped.

"Yes," chuckled Preet. "I'm afraid we do."

"Lekin Preet..." Her feeble protests did little to deter him. He lifted the thin fabric over her head and tossed it onto the floor, then leaned back slightly to get a good look at her. He sucked in a deep breath as he took in the full sight of her. A smile formed at the corner of his mouth as he watched her turn different shades of pink under his scrutizing gaze. She was absolutely adorable when embarrassed. He leaned forward and kissed her, nipping her bottom lip with his teeth in the process.

"I thought you said you weren't going to bite," giggled Meher.

Preet threw his head back and laughed. He pressed her back onto the bed until she was flat beneath him, then kissed her so deeply, she was left gasping for air. As his lips traveled down the rest of her body, in a slow lingering pace, her entire body became wrought with anticipation. Rippling sensations and the exquisite feel of skin on skin contact swept over her, melting away her usual buttoned up restraint. She clawed at the sheets then clutched his shoulders, closed her eyes and let go, willingly abandoning herself to him completely.
