Chapter 53 - Making Memories of Our Own
Preet lay in bed holding Meher in his arms. The sun's rays filtering through the window blinds had woken him up a while ago, but he had been in no rush to leave the warm bed with his new bride in it. His bride. His very own Cinderella. He looked over at her and smiled, listening to the soft sounds of her breathing as she slept leaning against his chest. So beautiful and soft. Tailor made just for him. She fit perfectly in his arms. He reached out and gently pushed back the wisps of tousled hair that had fallen over her eyes. She was usually an early riser, but was sleeping soundly, probably still exhausted from last night.
Ah! Last night. Preet thought about what it had felt like to have her warm body fully pressed against his. He slowly slid his hand down the curve of Meher's back and felt her snuggle up closer against him. He smiled remembering the bliss they had shared in each other's arms. Fighting the urge to wake her up and start all over again, he reached out for his phone lying on the bedside table and checked the time. It was almost noon. Nope. He definitely didn't want to leave the bed, but he had to if he wanted to surprise her. Besides, they had plenty of time to be together. "I love you Cinderella," he whispered. He kissed the top of her head, then carefully slid his arm out from under her. He stepped out of the warm bed, collected his clothes, and headed for the shower. On the way, he stopped by the window and peaked outside. It had started snowing. Perfect, he smiled. This meant they wouldn't have to go into town to sight see or anything. Which also meant more time for just the two of them to be together.
A short while later...
"Mmm...Preet...," Meher mumbled as she stretched her arms out in bed. She reached out and felt the side of the bed next to her. It was empty. "Preet?" she whispered. She slowly sat up, rubbed the sleep from her eyes, and looked around. She was alone in the room. What time was it, and where was Preet? Carefully wrapping the sheet around herself, she got out of bed. Clothes. Where were her clothes? She found a grey t-shirt lying around, quickly pulled it on then went to look for Preet. To her surprise, he wasn't in any of the other rooms. That's strange, she thought. Where would he go without telling me? Was something wrong? Had something happened?
Just then the front door of the cabin flew open, and Preet walked in with an arm load of firewood. "Hey, you're up!" he smiled, as he dumped the wood by the door and took off his gloves.
"Preet!" Meher ran up to him and hugged him tightly. "Where were you? I was so worried?"
"Worried? What for?" asked Preet. "I just went to get some firewood."
"I see that now," sighed Meher. "But when I woke up and found you gone, I thought...something had happened...that perhaps...you had left me."
"Me leave you? Not a chance Cinderella," Preet shook his head. He put his arms around her waist and drew her close. "Especially not after last night." Meher dipped her head and gave him a shy smile. As her cheeks grew red, he grinned and placed a kiss at the top of her head. "You know, I love the way you blush. It's so cute and innocent."
It was then that Meher noticed something on his jacket. "Preet!" she broke away from him and ran to the window. "Is it snowing outside?"
"It sure is," smiled Preet.
"Wow!" she cried excitedly. "I've never seen real snow fall before."
"Meher wait..." Before Preet could stop her, she had run out the door.
As soon as she stepped outside, the cold wind slapped her face. "Eeekkk!" she cried as she ran back inside with frozen toes and chattering teeth. "It's c-c-cold out there."
"Yeah, no kidding," chuckled Preet. "What possessed you to run out there with nothing but a T-shirt on?"
"I guess I just got excited. They make it look so romantic in the movies," complained Meher.
"You mean with the heroines wearing nothing but silky saris?" Preet shook his head. He took off his coat and put it around her. "Yeah well in reality snow is quite cold, but you can enjoy yourself if you're properly dressed for it. We can do that in a little while. How about we get something to eat first?"
"Good idea," said Meher. She handed him his coat back. "Just give me a little time to shower and change first."
"Okay," said Preet, as he followed her to the washroom.
"Where do you think you're going?" Meher turned around and asked.
"What...don't you want me to join you?" He teased.
"Preet!" giggled Meher. "You look like you already had a shower."
"Yes, but I don't mind having another one," said Preet. He leaned in close to her, but she pushed him back and shut the door. "Oh come on Meher! Just think of the water we'll conserve."
"Go away Preet!" Meher called out from behind the door.
Preet chuckled to himself then headed to the kitchen.
A short while later...
Meher stepped out of the bathroom, towel drying her hair. She could smell the aroma of fresh food being prepared. Is that coffee and eggs? She found Preet hard at work in the kitchen. He wore a 'Kiss the Chef' apron and grey pajamas that looked like they matched the T-shirt she was wearing. Preet was cooking?!
"Hey, you're just in time," he smiled as he held out a cup of coffee for her.
"Thanks," said Meher, but as she tried to take the cup from him, he pulled it back and pointed to the words written on his apron.
"You're supposed to kiss the chef, remember?" he said.
Meher laughed, threw her arms around his neck and gave him a quick kiss. She took the coffee from him, leaned back against the counter and took a sip as she watched him cook. "You know it's almost time for lunch. We could just warm up some of the food we brought back yesterday."
"I know, but I wanted to eat something fresh not left-overs," said Preet. "Besides, it's not often that I get to test out my cooking skills in the kitchen."
"I didn't know you could cook," smiled Meher.
"Well, I can't. I mean, not really," said Preet. "But pancake instructions were on the box, and eggs...that's no rocket science."
"Let me help," offered Meher.
"No, it's okay," Preet shook his head. "I got this. Actually, I meant to surprise you with breakfast in bed, but...one...I woke up too late...and two...you got up before I could surprise you." He flipped the omelette he was making onto a plate. "Voila!"
Meher followed him to the dining table. "Wow! Eggs, toast, juice, coffee and pancakes. I'm not only surprised, I'm impressed Preet."
"Thanks," he smiled, as he held out a chair for her.
"So, what are our plans for today?" Meher asked. She passed Preet the toast, then helped herself to some too. "I think we should go back into town. There are so many lovely trails that we still haven't explored. And what about sunset point, or is it sunrise point? I don't know, but there is some very nice scenic point we should check out that some ladies in the bazaar mentioned to me yesterday."
"Whoa Meher, slow down," said Preet. He pointed towards the window. "Are you forgetting that it's snowing outside? And I don't have snow tires on the car. That severely limits what activity we can indulge in up here in Kasauli."
"Oh," Meher took a bite of her breakfast. "Then what are our options?"
"Well, we can go out and enjoy the snow," said Preet. "And then we can come back inside and warm each other up. Or..." He gave her a sheepish grin and rubbed his foot against her calf. "...we can skip the snow all together and go straight to the warming up part."
"Preet Juneja! Is that all you ever think about?" giggled Meher.
"Well, you can't really blame me, can you?" said Preet. "I have such a beautiful distraction sitting right in front of me." He piled a small stack of pancakes onto his plate, poured syrup and fruit on it, then took a bite. "Acha sunno, I was thinking maybe when we get back to Delhi, we could get your passport made and go somewhere nice for a real honeymoon."
"Wouldn't you have to get back to work soon?" asked Meher. "Besides, it's so lovely up here as it is, why go anywhere else?"
"Really? No Switzerland? Or Bora Bora?" asked Preet.
"Bora Bora? Is that even a real place?" asked Meher.
"Yes it is," said Preet. "Itni mushkil se tum mere haat ayi ho (I had such a hard time making you mine), I want to make this time of ours together really special, something that you will always remember."
"It's not the time or place but rather the person you share it with that makes it special Preet," smiled Meher. "We don't have to go anywhere else. I have all the memories I want right here with you."
A short while later...
Meher carefully dressed in layers of warm outerwear, muffler, hat and gloves. She looked at Preet. He was dressed simply in his coat and boots. "Are you sure that is going to be enough?" she asked. "It was really cold outside."
"I'm a man Meher," said Preet. "Main yeh sab bardasht kar sakta hoon (I can tolerate all this)."
"If you say so," Meher shrugged her shoulders. She handed him a pair of gloves. "But at least put these on so you can touch the snow without freezing your fingers off."
Outside, a substantial amount of snow had accumulated on the ground, and more continued to fall. Meher ran out ahead excitedly to the glistening white snow filled yard. Preet watched as she spun around with her arms extended, then stuck her tongue out. As the cold flakes land on it, she giggled like a little girl finally being allowed to do all the silly things she had always wanted to do. Preet pulled out his phone and clicked a picture. What he wouldn't do to keep that smile on her face?
Meher looked up at him and found him smiling at her. She waved at him urging him to join her. "Come on Preet, come and help me! I want to build a snowman!"
"A snowman?" laughed Preet. "You sound like Chahat."
"Come on Preet, just humor me," said Meher. "It's my first snowfall."
They worked together to roll the snow into 3 large balls stacked onto one another. They substituted some twigs for arms, and small pebbles for eyes, a nose and buttons. "Not bad, if I say so myself," smiled Meher. "Even if it is a little crooked."
Preet took another picture of her standing next to the snowman, then watched as she ran to another side of the yard and let herself fall into an untouched patch of snow. She waved her arms and legs up and down. "Look Preet...a snow angel!" she smiled. "Come on, you can make one too."
"No thanks," said Preet. He stuffed his hands in his pockets. "I'm not interested in taking a dive in the snow."
"Come on Preet, you're no fun," complained Meher.
"Fun? Meher, it's cold," said Preet. "I mean, snow might be a new novelty for you, but I shoveled plenty of it back in Canada. Trust me, it loses its charm after that. In fact, haven't you had enough too? I really think we should go inside and..." Suddenly a snowball hit him full in the face. "What the...?" He shook his head to clear it of the snow and looked at Meher in surprise. "What did you do that for?"
She gave him a mischievous smile as she picked up some more snow and packed it into a ball.
"Meher, I'm warning you," Preet held his hand out and took a step towards her.
She paused for a moment and stared at the snowball in her hand, then threw it at him anyway. It hit him in the chest. "Ha ha! Gotcha!" she laughed.
"That's it!" cried Preet. He chased after her, stopping to scoop up snow as he ran. He tossed the snowball he had made at her but missed. He tried to tackle her, but missed again by mere inches and wound up landing face down in the snow. He pulled himself up frowning as he dusted the snow off his clothing.
"Ha-ha!" Meher laughed.
"Preet Juneja 6 feet tall.
Came from Canada shoveling snow and all.
The practice really did him no good today.
Because he fell face first in the snow anyway!"
"That's not funny Meher," frowned Preet.
"Yes it is," teased Meher. "You just fumbled or should I say tumbled like an amateur." She threw another snowball at him, this one hitting him in the head.
"Ah!" he cried as he fell down.
"Oh my God, Preet!" Meher cried out worriedly. She ran over to where he sat in the snow holding his hands over his face. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. Are you okay?"
"No," he said. "I think you got me in the eye."
"Here, let me see," said Meher. When she moved his hand she saw that he was smiling.
"Fooled you!" He grinned. In an instant, he grabbed her by the arms and rolled over so that he was on top of her.
"Preet Juneja that's cheating!" Meher protested as she squirmed underneath him.
"Call it what you want," chuckled Preet. "But now it's your turn to eat snow." Sitting astride her he rubbed the cold snow in her face as she tried in vain to turn her face away.
"Ugh! You're dead meat Preet Juneja!" She pushed him off her then got on top of him, grabbed a fist full of snow and stuffed it down his collar. She jumped off and out of the way as he tried to grab hold of her, then kneeled in the snow and started tossing nonstop waves of it at him.
"Mercy Meher! Mercy!" said Preet as he used his arms for cover. As soon as she stopped, he leapt towards her. They tumbled in the snow laughing out loud. They had been outside for only an hour but their faces were red. Preet stood up first then offered his hand to Meher. "Had enough?" he asked as he helped her up. She nodded and smiled at him. "Come on then, let's go in and get warmed up."
With arms linked together, they slowly walked back to the cabin. They brushed the snow off their coats, stomped their boots on the welcome mat outside then went inside.
"That was fun, but I'm soaked through and through," said Meher.
"Me too," said Preet. He went to the dining table, picked up a chair in each hand and brought them back to the fireplace. He peeled off a layer of wet clothes and spread them out on the chair. "We can let our clothes dry by the fire."
Meher nodded, took off her coat and handed it to him, then went inside the bedroom to change. Preet added some more wood to the fireplace, then looked around for something to change into. He found his pajamas where he left them, neatly folded on one side of the sofa. Now where did I put the T-shirt? He wondered as he looked around for it. Oh wait...Meher had it on this morning. I'll ask her where she put it.
Just then the door opened and Meher came out wearing his T-shirt. She saw him staring at her. "Uh...were you looking for this?" she asked pointing to the T-shirt. "I hope you don't mind. It's just so comfortable."
"No, go ahead. Why would I mind?" said Preet. "It looks better on you than me." He tilted his head and stared at the length of her shapely bare legs. "And your legs are definitely more beautiful than mine."
"Preet!" Meher shook her head and smiled. "I'm going to go make some hot chocolate."
A short while later...
Preet had changed into his pajamas. He walked into the kitchen and found Meher stirring a pot on the stove. "What are you making?"
"Well, I was just going to make hot chocolate, but I decided to start a batch of soup too," said Meher. "We had breakfast for lunch, so I figured it would make for a nice light snack."
Preet leaned over her shoulder and sniffed the aroma coming out of the pot. "Mmm, it smells wonderful." He rubbed his cheek against hers, and kissed her behind her ear nipping softly at the lobe. "And so do you." His lips brushed along her neck tickling her. It made her laugh. It was a wonderful sound, soft and light. He liked it. It made his own heart feel light and happy. Besides, she looked beautiful when she smiled.
"Preet," giggled Meher. "Here, take this." She turned around to face him and handed him a cup with hot chocolate. "It'll warm you up until the soup is ready."
Preet took the cup from her and placed it back on the stove. He placed his hands on her waist and pulled her close to him. "I can think of much better ways to warm up Cinderella." With his forehead against hers, he smiled into her eyes.
The affection in his gaze brought a blush to her cheeks. "Preet...tum bhi na...," stammered Meher. She tried to turn back but he held her in place, then surprised her by lifting her up and seating her on the counter. He turned off the stove and took her hand in his. "Preet...what are you...?" Before she could finish she felt him place something in her hand. She looked down to see a little red box in her palm. "What's this?" she looked up at him questioningly.
Preet smiled at her then gently opened the box. Inside was a ring with a stunning oval shaped ruby at its center framed by sparkling diamonds. "This was my mother's ring," he explained. "She always wanted me to give it to the woman I fell in love with. So now it's yours."
"It's beautiful Preet. I'll cherish it always," said Meher. "I wish your mother was still alive so that I could meet her."
"So do I," smiled Preet. "She would have been very happy with my choice." He took the ring out of the box and slid it on her finger, then kissed her hand so tenderly that Meher thought she might melt into a puddle. "I love you Cinderella," he whispered, before leaning forward and kissing her on the mouth. The taste of her soft lips stopped all thought in his head. Heat ripped through him as she wrapped her legs around him and kissed him back deeply. That was all the invitation he needed. He lifted her off the counter and carried her down the short hallway to their bedroom.
