Who is Anthakasur? What is Parvati's role in his life history?

This was the story given in Siv Maha Puran

Siva and Parvati were enjoying a very pleasant day at Mandara parvat. Parvati closed the eyes of Siva playfully and darkness descended on the universe.As she removed her hands from the eyes of Siva, the universe emerged out of darkness. Yet, from the droplets of sweat of Siva that fell on ground, a child was born and he was blind.

As soon as he was born he cried and laughed. He is very ugly in looks.

Parvati removed her hands and universe got rid of darkness.

Siva asked Parvati with a smile." You are the one who closed my eyes and caused darkness.Why do you look terrified now?"

Parvati replied with hesitation." I see this ugly being before my eyes roaring fiercely. Who is this?

Siva said " Uma..he is our son born from my sweat caused by your touch. He is born blind because he got life when you closed my eyes. He will be called Anthak. Be merciful and save him from ganas since he evokes terror."

Parvati nodded her head and nourished him with the help of her maids . Within a short period Hiranyaksha did penance seeking a son for him.

Siva gave away this blind child to Hiranyaksha, the Daitya king .

Note :Nowhere it is described that Parvati cherished this son and wanted to bring him up. It is Shiv who declared the boy as their son. No objection raised by Parvati when he was given away.

Andhakasura grew up to be a competent warrior, faced jealousy in the palace from his siblings and did rigorous tapas to earn attention of Lord Brahma. When Brahma appeared he asked for a life of victories . And a life without death. The second part was not granted. Andhakasura then requested he should die when he would try to grab the unattainable If he desires a mother like woman that should lead to his last moment.So that was the boon given by Brahma.

Andhakasura conquered the universe. . Devas were subdued.
Vishnu , who vanquished Andhaka's foster father Hiranyaksha asked the Devas to wait for an opportunity to see the downfall of Anthaka.,who is invincible to him even.

Once Andhaka went to Mandar Parvat with his ministers and soldiers. He heard from them about a Yogi and his beautiful wife who dwell in a mountain cave. .Andhakasura wanted to possess the beautiful woman of Mandara caves.

He demanded the Yogi to offer the woman for him. The Yogi was Siva and the beautiful woman was Parvati.

Now, Siva was drawn into a fierce battle against Andhakasura. He , according to one account, had to go for a long tapas to augment his vigour to the level required while Brahma, Vishnu,Varahamurty, Indra, Kartikeya and Yama held fort. Siva, on his return from his tapas, joined the battle. But he found killing Andhakasura was not possible as each drop of blood from his body that fell on the ground gave birth to another Andhakasura. In this battle, Andhakasura was helped by Shukracharya , the guru of the Daityas.Siva swallowed Sukracharya who started misusing " mrita Sanjivini" by giving life to demons who were killed.( Later he released him)

In the meanwhile Vishnu got angry and took the form of Yogeswari who came out of Siva's ear.

Devi Yogeswari joined the Matrikas created by the warring seven gods. Each of these Matrikas was identically endowed as the god she was representing.

Yogeswari and the Matrikas started to drink each droplet of blood of Andhakasura, thus stopping him from multiplying

Gradually, Andhakasura was cornered. He could not multiply further and his strength started getting depleted.Siva , then, struck his final blow. He pierced Andhakasura's chest with his trident and held him up. After a thousand years' in the suspended position, Andhakasura realised his mistake and prayed for forgiveness. After his death he wanted to be with Siva and serve him with whole hearted devotion.

Siva blessed him to lead a reformed life among the Pramathas and Ganas.

Note: In this story Parvati did not hold any attachment with Anthak . She is the reason for his birth.Incidentally she became the reason for his death also.

Thank you for the post dear Lakshmi .

Is the story of Andhakasur mentioned in other texts like Shakti puran and Devi Bhagavatham or is it mentioned only in Shiv puran texts .

Because some months ago I noticed someone claiming that this show follows the Devi Bhagavatham ( REALLY ??? 😆 ) & so I want to know what MahaKali had to do with Andhakasur story .

Andhakasur story is almost the same with very little variations in Matsya puran,linga Puran Varaha Puran but it was not mentioned in Devi Bhagawatam as far as I know. Prahlada was a cousin of Andhak who tries to dissuade him from his immoral desire. But Andhak won't listen. As per those sources Prahlad reveals his origin..that he is the son of Siv Parvati ...but Andhak won't change his mind.

Since it is Siva who subdued him it won't come under Devi's exploits though some sources say Siva asked Chandika Devi to suck the blood. May be UN will show Mahakali doing major part in defeating Andhak. Quite possible.

Wow I didn't know about Prahlad's role in andhak's story ! Thank you for mentioning it ! He's one of my most favourite devotional character 😊

Lakshmi, you did a great job of sharing Andhakasur story and mentioning the source before UN makes a total mess out of it with his so called "creative liberty' .

Lakshmi utti giving andaka Mommy syndrome here. Utti loves major boo hoo stuff.

I just watch for the lovely leads.

Gannu face also looks bad. We actually see the cracks on the trunkk at times where it is attached to his face

Yes Agree. Kartik and Ganesh are not enough for UN to explore mother sentiment.

As for Ganesh he is not looking good Ganeshas of all recent shows are cute speciallythe boy who stars in the presently running show. Sorry for comparison but this Ganesh is not that convincing that includes his make up.
