1 - Ineradicable Mask - Pinky Singh Oberoi
She felt better after years she had put on a simple pink dress, in contrast to her regular richly embroidered and designed suits. No one was home except her. She made her way to the terrace, after giving the servants off for the day. A cold breeze greeted her as she opened the creaking door. She looked at the door, it needed repair.
She walked to the abandoned old swing. It had been rusted, sporadically. She sighed . It used to be her favorite pastime, swinging on it, when she was a young lady. She would quickly finish her chores and when the kids would be playing she would quietly make her way to the terrace, to this specific swing and let her insecurities be kissed away by the cool evening breeze. She found solace in the ever welcoming breeze. She loved to watch the darkness cover the sky and wipe away the light that discriminated.
She gently sat on the swing, that she had abandoned for long. Her eyes were moist. She looked over the night sky, not a single star willing to flash a smile at her. Had she become so repugnant?
The universe at least knew that it was all a facade, a mere mask she had put on.
The memory of those days that caused her to that made her decide to wear this mask came flashing before her. Those words still echoed in her ears.
"Bhaabhi, aap please guest ko welcome kariyega, aap toh jaanti hai Pinky...!"
"Don't, worry Shakti, I will welcome them."replied Jaanvi smiling
"Badi Maa, could you please review my economics assignment? Cause you are simply the best."
"Of course Shivaay, but I know it is already the best."
"Learnt it all from you Badi Maa!"he smiled.
"Mrs.Oberoi, how do you manage business, kids and family at the same time?" (buzzing reporters)
"It's the family, that's my support!"
"Shakti where is your wife, never seen her on any party or function?"
"She isn't well today and she generally doesn't prefer, so I don't force. Anyway you enjoy the party Samanatha. Spoke Shakti cordially to her female colleague."
She covered her ears, tears rolling down her cheeks. This was what she wanted to end. She was suffocating in her own family, in her own home. This was why she loved the open terrace and the appearing darkness. Never did anyone of them see how badly their indifference to her, hurt her. Nor did she try to become better than herself. She simply put on a mask. She decorated that mask with fake superiority, pride and what not.
But, alas, was it a mask she had put on? Or had she really turned herself to being the mask she wore?
Tears seemed unstoppable. She wanted to get this mask off her. he wanted to be herself. Just, herself. Was it too late?
She had slowly learnt to snatch what she wasn't given. Somewhere down she knew it was wrong, but she kept justifying it. And soon she no longer felt it was wrong. Slowly the wrongs seemed right in their own way.
Then came Anika, a free jaunty girl, who at times reminded her of her own real self. She hated the fact that she was loved despite the fact she did not fit the bill. But, way back when she was like that she was not even good enough to be acknowledged?
She hated it that Shivaay liked her like that. She hated it that he let her be the way she was. What she din't see was Anika never saw the indifference towards her, she called it love. She had accepted and loved herself, but Pinky hadn't. Anika had faced a crueler world that had made her what she was but Pinky din't know that.
Her own son din't want to call her mother' today. What could be worse? No one saw the struggle she had with herself. No one saw the bruises behind that smile. No one saw the wounds beneath that laugh. No one saw that Pinky who was hurt.
The Pinky that lay beneath the mask of Pinky Singh Oberoi. The Pinky that was now lost.
Was it that mask that had killed her? She wanted to take it off, tell the world she wasn't what they saw. She wasn't the one who cared for name, or wealth. She wasn't the one who wanted to break hearts and snatch away happiness. She had just wanted the respect and love that she should have rightfully got.
Perhaps, Wearing this mask was the biggest mistake she had done!
Cause no matter how hard she tried the mask wouldn't come off.The mask was ineradicable! What lay beneath the mask, was forever lost !?
