Actress Saranya Bhagyaraj, the 23 year old daughter of the star couple Bhagyaraj and Poornima Bhagyaraj allegedly attempted suicide late Monday night, by consuming poison. She was later admitted to a private hospital in Adyar, where she is undergoing treatment.

The reason for this extreme step was attributed to a failed relationship. Sources reveal that of late, Sharanya had been mentally disturbed after her relationship with an NRI based in Australia broke up. It is learnt that Sharanya, who started her film career with the film Paarijatham opposite Prithiviraj which was directed by her father Bhagyaraj, was involved with the NRI for the past year.

Even though she got a couple of film offers after her debut, she only signed one Malayalam film and a Tamil film titled Dhik Dhik which is yet to be released.

Sources add that Sharanya had been shuttling between Chennai and Australia quite often and the disheartened actress resorted to this extreme step following a recent split between the two when the man allegedly refused to marry her. Sources also add that this is not the first time Sharanya has attempted suicide. This was reportedly her third attempt. During the previous attempts too she was saved due to the timely intervention of her family. When this newspaper tried to contact her family members, they weren't available for comment.

However, while the doctors at Malar Hospital confirmed that it was a case of attempted suicide, friends close to the family denied this and claim that the actress was down with food poisoning and was admitted to the hospital for treatment.
