CH4: The Big Reveal
Shivaay Singh Oberoi would come to his Anika like a thief in the night. She had hardened her heart against him long ago. But it was getting difficult to keep up her walls. They hadn't gotten much farther than the living room floor. She would chop him fresh fruit and he would nibble at the bits between breaks of nibbling on her.
Shivaay had taken his time with her education. No bedroom yet, just little kisses and caresses to ease her discomfort. He was hoping she would open up with time. Never in his life had Shivaay Singh Oberoi worked so hard to get a girl into bed and a gold-digger at that. She had no problem with him paying her bills but come night time and she was acting uptight! He was not having it. But what else could he do? Not like he could rescind the offer after all this hassle.
"Did you try the clothes I ordered?"
"No, mine are just fine".
Would this woman ever just shut up and give in?
"I told you and I not saying it again, I require a certain type of dressing sense from my woman".
"Yeah, the type that shows off what kind of trophy you've won. Well, I have got news for you. I am nobody's trophy", she retorted.
"You are mine, bought and paid for. Now have those clothes on your body tomorrow night or I will force you into them myself".
Anika didn't what she'd smoked the day she said "yes" to this beast.
The first night they were seen together, she'd done as he'd asked and dressed to the nines. Hair upswept in a do, a choker armed to kill. He'd looked once and kept on looking. There was so much nuance to a girl dressed in so little. He'd made her change right away.
"This is too little, for my eyes only. Go back and cover up".
"No", she replied.
"No?"
"No, not unless you say, 'Anika you were right. You should have worn your own clothes. I am sorry'".
"In your dreams". Shivaay Singh Oberoi apologized to no one, certainly not to a two-bit...He halted his thoughts. Even if he wasn't married, he never wanted to turn into his father. It was one thing to have fun with a girl and a whole other to treat her this way.
"I am asking for your own good Anika. The men around me will not stop staring and the women will through you daggers with their eyes".
"So?"
"So, you will be the cause of a major riot when I spoon the eyes out of every man who dares to look at what's mine".
Uff! Why did have to say things like this? Now she was blushing to the roots of her hair.
"Okay, fine. I will change. Next time, try to give me advance notice".
The drama back at the apartment was nothing compared to the drama that was about to ensue at the club. As soon as they walked in the venue her eyes with those of a glistening Greek god with hair straight out of a shampoo advert. The good old Fabio-from-a-harlequin-cover brought to life. Dear heavens take her now!
Following the Greek god on his heels was a Pinocchio-esque cutie with overgrown muscles that oddly suited him well. She'd never thought of falling for a gymrat. But thing 1 and thing 2 were now officially part of her imaginary harem.
"Om, Rudy, oh shit!" Shivaay was clearly baffled.
"What? You know them?"
"They are my brothers".
And there went her dream harem. Bhabhi-mode was on. Or whatever the equivalent was for a half-girlfriend aka kept woman.
"Hi", the gym rat named Rudy waved. What kind of name was Rudy? He looked more like a munna to her. The kind of neighbourhood munna all the aunties kept around exclusively for pinching cheeks, expect he had muscles and lots of them.
"Hello, I am..."
Shivaay interrupted her, "we just met. We're having some drinks at the bar. Gotta go now. See you at home". He started tugging her away from them.
"Not so fast bhai. Let the lady introduce herself", Om said.
Anika didn't know what came over her. She was on a mission to take Shivaay down. Caught up in the moment, she spilled more raita than she should have.
"I am Anika. No naam, no khoon, no khandaan. That's why your bhaiyaji isn't too keen to introduce me to you. But you know what? We do just fine at the fall of night. In fact, he's spending every night at my apartment. Correction, the apartment he bought for me. Told me, I am good enough to sleep..."
"Enough!" roared Shivaay. "We're leaving Anika. Om, Rudra, I will see you guys at the mansion tomorrow. Let's go Anika".
Anika felt so much lighter now that she had bared her secret to another soul. Come what may, she could be proud she had cleared her conscience.
"If you think for one minute you will get any more money out of me with the stunt you pulled, you are mistaken. With one phone call, I can take away every you've earned so far", Shivaay threatened.
"I have earned nothing. Not on my back. You are welcome to your riches. As far as I am concerned, this was a mistake. One I am eager to rectify".
How she wished she could leave all this behind and just run away, never to see him again.
"If you turn your back on me now, it does not bode well for your family, your EMI, your brother's treatments, his tuition fees. The city is expensive Anika. Where will you go? What will you do?"
"Everything I had been doing before you walked in".
"Shivaay Singh Oberoi is the kind of storm that takes lifetimes to recover from. I will only leave destruction in my wake. Are you prepared for that?"
"Try your filmy dialogue with some other girl, I find you irritating at best. Now move along. I have to get my shit sorted".
"This attitude better only last as far our ride to the apartment. Then, I am setting you straight. Nobody speaks to Shivaay Singh Oberoi this way and gets away with it".
When they entered the apartment, there was trouble waiting in the form of Dadi, Jhanvi and Pinky all weeping on the top of their lungs like some giant tragedy had befallen the family.
"Oh my mata! You brought a rakhail to the family? I never thought I would see the day that my son would turn into his own useless father", Pinky moaned.
"Mom, what are you saying? She is my gi...girl...girlfriend", Shivaay tripped over the word and Anika knew the circumstances had forced him into it. Had it been up to him, Shivaay would never accept her as his girl. Whatever this was, he was simply playing around to appease his family.
"Puttar, if you really love her then you should have dated her, brought her to meet us, and then married her. Things do not progress this way in our family. We do not do live in relationships, not when you know what your mother has been through", Dadi berated.
"Dadi, I am not married and I certainly not my father. We were just taking our time, getting to know each other". Now he was straight up lying. Who was the idiot who'd opened their big mouth to dadi? Must be one of his two ullu bhais, probably Rudra.
"You should have done that before you moved her in with you. Now there is only one option. You will marry her", Dadi declared.
"Marry her? Dadi I barely know her!"
"Puttarji, you know her enough to live with her. So, you know her enough to marry her. Besides, I like her and that's that". That marked the end of conversation from Dadi.
Anika was dumbfounded and a little excited. Never in her wildest dreams had she thought she would marry into such a vibrant family. The men were adorable, if a little foolish. The women were clearly loved and indulged in their dramatics. Her inner drama queen (every girl has one) was jumping for joy at thought of being accepted into their fold. The only problem was the would-be groom. He was an as###le of the first order. Oh well, she supposed she could ignore him most of the time in a big house. If she were to ever get married, this would be the household to do it. She couldn't deny money played a part in her decision but it was their joy that won her over. She was ready to be hitched to Billu Singh Oberoi.
