IT was a work of fantasy of which J K Rowling would have been proud.

The Sun's 'exclusive' page three lead on Monday told how Hertford classmates of Harry Potter star Rupert Grint had been banned from asking him for his autograph.

Senior staff at Richard Hale School had apparently held a special assembly warning pupils not to pester the young thespian, who plays Ron Weasley in the Potter movies.

"Anybody flouting the rules gets a lesson-length detention," a source told The Sun.

All good fun, except for one minor detail — Rupert left the school in July 2004!

A bemused Nigel Grint, father of the star, told the Mercury: "It's all a bit of a mystery — I don't know where it's come from.

"He left the school last summer after completing his GCSEs, and even when he was there, there were never any strict stipulations about that [signing autographs]. It's a bit bizarre."

The story was quickly picked up by other news organisations, including the Scotsman newspaper and web-based Ananova.

Richard Hale also received calls on Monday from journalists on four national newspapers and from the BBC hoping to follow up the story.

Rupert's agent, Chris Harris, said: "It always amazes us when we get these stories, but it's the timing of this one that's really strange.

"We weren't contacted by The Sun. I can only assume they were rummaging around for stories and found this one in their files.

"It's not true anyway - he spent very little time at the school because he was filming so often. So there was never a ban."

He said Rupert was "slightly surprised" by the story.

Richard Hale headteacher Steve Neate said: "Rupert had an untroubled time here because the boys respected his privacy. The headteacher at the time, Dumbledore [Mike] James, made an informal request to the boys in assembly ahead of Rupert coming back from filming just to give him space and treat him normally.

"There were no written rules about it and there wasn't any case of detentions being given because the boys showed good sense. Once Rupert was in school, he blended in. When I came to the school it was hard to pick him out because he didn't have a big following at break or lunchtimes.

"We do follow his progress, but we were amazed to see our name in the press again. There were a few wry smiles here about how out of date their story was."

The next instalment of the Harry Potter series is released on November 18. The Goblet of Fire is expected to follow in its predecessors' footsteps and become a massive box office hit.

Biography

We know him as the red-headed loveable Ronald Weasley from the Harry Potter films, but who exactly is Rupert Grint?

A shy, never outspoken sixteen year old who can slip into character at the snap of a finger. That's Rupert Grint. Not only has Rupert gained the credibility of the Harry Potter films to his name, he also has a variety of radio, movie and television appearances which recognise him as one of the UK's up-and-coming stars.

Rupert is the eldest of five siblings, and was born on the 24th August 1988. Rupert seems very much the "big brother" to his brother James, and sisters' Georgina, Samantha and Charlotte. Often, at Harry Potter premieres more-so, you will see him with one, or all, of his brother and sisters.

The place where Rupert grew up, Hertfordshire, is very much a classic English county. Before Rupert was cast as Ron, he attended an all-boys school in Herts, which still proudly displays a picture of him upon their website. It is no doubt that his hometown, where his family and friends live, has played a large part in Rupert remaining so level-headed.

First Time Around

From an early age Rupert loved the Harry Potter books and this is the likely reason for which he got into acting in the first instance. It is certainly no secret that Rupert found out about the auditions for the very first Harry Potter movie through British children's news programme "NewsRound". It turns out that if dressing up as your drama teacher (who is a woman), and then rapping about why you want the part of Ron won't get you the job, not much will!

When he got the part of Ron, Rupert was elated, after all, who better than a Harry Potter fan to make sure that one of the books most key character's remains true to form? Harry Potter and the Philosopher/Sorcerer's Stone was wildly anticipated by the fans, and the world waited with baited breath to see the first film adaptation of JK Rowling's bestseller book series.

Like most of us would do, Rupert was very excited that he was going to be one of the most famous child stars in the UK – if not the world. When speaking to Lizo on NewsRound – the very show which helped him on his way to the famous part of Ron – Rupert said: "It's going to be really weird to know that people are going to actually know my name, that's going to be strange." But the extent to which Pottermania, and the success of the following films would generate, we don't think even Rupert could have anticipated.

And so the first film was released, catapulting Rupert into the limelight, and he seemed to relish every minute of it. The film itself received some criticisms, but Rupert was quick to defend the work of the Harry Potter crew saying: "I am a really big Harry Potter fan and I've seen all the sets, I've lived Harry Potter and I don't think it's destroyed the books at all, I think it's really spot on."

Working on the set of the first Harry Potter film only proved to give Rupert more of a thirst to advance his acting career.

Back for Seconds

Working on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets presented Rupert with the chance to work alongside more of the best actors in the British industry. Jason Issacs and Kenneth Brannagh joined the Harry Potter cast for the epic second film.

By this time, of course, Rupert had already filmed a non-Harry Potter film, Thunderpants, which gave him the extra experience, and probably confidence, which stars twice his age failed to have. Rupert described filming Thunderpants as, "I think I needed to do another role because I was completely 'Pottered out' by the first one [referring to the first Harry Potter film]. So I think it was good I did a completely different role."

There were only two problems which Rupert faced on the second Harry Potter film- tasking stunts and spiders. Though he holds a mortal fear of the latter, the slug scene proved no problem for Rupert to film, even though they had to come out of his mouth. Rupert said of this: "It was so fun because they had all these different flavours of slug slime. There was chocolate, there was lemon, there was orange, there was peppermint. All these different flavours - they made them taste really nice."

The Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret's film provided an opportunity also, for Rupert to express his intentions for the future Harry Potter films. When asked if he would consider returning for the fourth Harry Potter film (which we know he has) he commented: "I don't know yet - I want to do most of them because I have a really good time doing them. And I want to do this when I'm older, because I really do enjoy it, it's really fun."

Though the fans watched endless interviews with Rupert as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets winged it's way to the cinema, there was also another aspect of Rupert's life which he tried to keep as normal as possible. When away from the premieres and interviews, it was a certain truth that Rupert wanted to hang out with friends, and do normal teenage things. He is quoted as saying: "My friends have been great - they treat me normally. The teachers suck up, they really do. But other than it's been fine." Most of us can understand exactly the reason why his teachers would have been star struck!

Return of the Trio

There was a small break between the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and when the cast returned for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban there was an evident change in the three leading cast – they were all grown up.

For the third film, Rupert had the features of a pool table and darts board in his trailer. Though he and Dan also tried to make a crazy golf course... "We made a six-foot windmill out of these massive cardboard boxes and it looked really good.... We had plans to expand it out to the main studio, but it never really got past one hole." Emma, Rupert and Dan's friendships were growing and they seemed more at ease with one another than ever, which showed in interviews promoting the new film. The bond which had been made filming the first two films, and handling the media frenzy afterwards would not be easily broken, it seems.

Rupert found the experience of filming the third Harry Potter film just as fun as the previous two films, and listed his favourite scene, the Shrieking Shack, as, "...I was supposedly being dragged along by a dog, but this guy was pulling me along the set". He also found the boggart scene (where Snape is dressed as Neville's grandmother) "very funny".

When the third film hit our cinema scenes, the trio were again in almost every magazine and newspaper on shop shelves. Once again, all three actors handed the attention with grace and professionalism, and when at premieres of Prisoner of Azkaban, their pride and excitement for the film shone.

It's A Wrap

Now we wait to see the fourth Harry Potter film, Goblet of Fire, which is due out this fall. Though we don't know much at the moment, it's obvious from press photo's and such that Rupert has had an amazing experience working on what will be the most expensive film of the present day.

Aside from Harry Potter, Rupert most recently appeared on Comic Relief and An Audience with Al Murray. He is also scheduled to appear in Driving Lessons, a film by Jeremy Brock which will also star his Harry Potter co-star Julie Walters. As we have said, Rupert certainly wants to broaden his horizons. And with his talents, we are sure that there will be many doors open to him in the film industry for a long, long time to come.

Personal quotes
[Answering to "Is Emma Watson actually bossy like Hermione?"] I'd tell you, but she'd hurt me.

"To bad brooms can't really fly. Now if you miss the bus you can't just go in your room and fly to school with a nimbus two thousand!"

"Being famous is wicked, but it's better to be normal."

"Oh, they're scary. To think that people are going to be playing with you!" [About Harry Potter action figures]

"All my brothers and sisters and friends have really helped me. They make my life normal. I still have arguments with my brother. And the little ones don't really understand. They just treat me like Rupert. Which is brilliant, really."

"Fans asking for my autograph is really weird. It's hard to get used to."

"I've tried several disguises and stuff but that doesn't work. I do get recognised sometimes but it's cool,"

"Things at home didn't change much. I still have to clean my own room!"

"When I read the books, I imagined that the family of Ron Weasley was my family. After reading the books, I knew the Weasleys inside out."

[Rupert would also like to play Malfoy]. 'He's pretty nasty all times, and that would be quite fun. It would be cool to have the audience against me'.

"It's really weird to get recognized and people call you 'Ron'."

"I am the biggest Harry Potter fan, I even was before I knew there was going to be a film. I read all the books. The fourth one is amazing. It's scary. But I like all the books. You've got to read them all to get the complete Harry Potter experience. In the third book I like all the bits about scabbers being an Animagus. And I like that Ron gets an owl."

[about don't be an assiduous student in school]"There is some truth in that statement. [laughs] I don't like school, which makes it easier for me not to do my homework. Evidently, my professors aren't very happy. And being in the Harry Potter movies doesn't give me any special treatment. For example, when I returned to school after Prisoner of Azkaban shooting, I had several hours of detention because I hadn't done my schoolwork."

Personal quotes
After being cast as Harry Potter: "I think I'm a tiny bit like Harry 'cos I'd like to have an owl. Yeah, that's the tiny bit, actually."

"I don't know. People tell me I look mournful. They say, "Cheer up, Dan, it's not that bad!" Sometimes I just look into space, which freaks people out. If I was ever required to do anything other than look haunted, I could. I'm a happy person. Though I don't, like, dot my "I's" with hearts or anything - that would be too happy."

"I'm not much of a cake person."

"But I don't think it's going to happen. I don't think I'll do all of them - I'll probably get too spotty or too tall or I'll shrink or something."

"Absolutely. 100 percent." [on believing in magic]

"I was in the bath at the time, and my dad came running in and said, 'Guess who they want to play Harry Potter!?' and I started to cry. It was probably the best moment of my life."

"I'm not clumsy, I'm just accident prone."

Upon seeing the movie: "I'm a bit nervous about whether people will like it, but I've seen it, and I'm sure they will. It's really good - it's quite scary, it's quite emotional. Even I cried and I don't cry easily! I cried at the end credits when my name came up, and I was, like, Oh my God! I can't believe that's my name! I've met so many people since we started filming and it's been wonderful. I've progressed so far and changed so much since the beginning. It's been like a real journey."

On considering himself as a heartthrob: "Personally I can't see it, but if other people can, fine. Cool!"

"I would consider doing any part as long as the script is good and the film has an interesting director."

"I like them, but it's hard to concentrate when the bats fly about, and they pee while they fly." [about the bats on the set]

"I've never been one of the cool people at school, but then again, I don't get the people who are cool. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that they don't interest me."

"Too many little numbers on one page!" - about math

"Stage is much more intimidating than going before the cameras, because you can really screw up, and can't do a retake."

"When I go back to school everyone asks a lot of questions. Then, after about a week, when I've answered everything, we get back to normal."

"It's too far down the road to decide about a fifth movie. I'm still the same age Harry is, and I haven't actually grown that much."

"Fans are really important for me. And if they take pains to write me, it's the minimum that I answer myself."

"I think I'm highly normal. I'm attending school after acting, I'm going out with friends, going to the cinema - I'm just doing everything a normal teenager does. People think I can't leave the house without being in a crowd of fans - but that's not true. I'm able to do more things than people might think."

"I'm thrilled of the acceptance I get abroad. The people are so hearty, warm and grateful and I feel privileged having seen so many countries and some of the greatest monuments."

"When I get into trouble at school I'd like to take an invisibility cloak, drape it over me and sneak out the door. Or I'd like to have a 3 headed-dog because then no one would argue with me"

"I played a trick on the make-up department where I put a fake blood capsule in my mouth, pretended to trip on the stairs and let the blood come out of my mouth. They really fell for it, then they chased after me with a water pistol."

"Everyone on the set has a mobile phone, and I found by pushing a few buttons, they could be programmed into different languages. I fixed Robbie's (Coltrane) to speak in Turkish."

"I don't understand girls, but I'm slowly learning."

emma watson quotes

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's / Sorcerer's stone

"I hope you're pleased with yourselves. Now, if you two don't mind, I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed. Or worse, expelled.

"Neville, I'm really, really sorry about this." She raised her wand. "Petrificus Totalus!"

"Books! And cleverness! There are more important things - friendship and bravery."

"Don't listen to him Harry! We all know where his [Malfoy's] faith lies."

"We attacked a teacher... we attacked a teacher... we're going to be in SO much trouble!"

"Ron, you've got dirt on your nose, don't you know?"

"You're saying it wrong. It's Win-gar-dium Levi-o-sa, and make the 'gar' nice and long!"

"Ron, you don't suppose this is going to be like . . real wizard's chess, do you?"

"Stop, stop stop! You're going to take someone's eye out. Besides, you're saying it wrong. It's Levi-o-sa, not Levio-sar."

"You don't use your eyes, do you? Didn't you see what it was standing on?"

"[putting a large book on the table] I got this out weeks ago for a bit of light reading."

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

"At least no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in. They got in on pure talent."

"Twitchy little ferret, aren't you Malfoy?"

"Even in the wizarding world, hearing voices isn't a good sign."

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

"Fine!" said Hermione suddenly, getting up and cramming Unfogging the Future back into her bag. "Fine!" she repeated, swinging her bag over her shoulder and almost knocking Ron of his chair. "I give up! I'm leaving!" And to the whole class's amazement, Hermione strode over to the trapdoor, kicked it open, and climbed down the ladder out of sight.

"Well honestly... 'the fates have informed her'... who sets the exam? She does! What an amazing prediction!"

"Of course I cant be in three places at once; Oh well, pass the marmalade"

"Oh, for goodness sakes, not that ridiculous Grim again."

"There you are, then! They see the Grim and die of fright. The Grim's not an omen, it's a cause of death! And Harry's still with us because he's not stupid enough to see one and think, right, well, I'd better pop my clogs then!"

"A telephone Ron. Honestly, you should take Muggle Studies next year . . "

Hermione: "Hasn't ANYONE ever read Hogwarts: A History????"
Ron: "Why bother? You know it by heart, we could just ask you."

"Don't worry. I'll speak to Professor Snape. You don't have to do the essay," said Professor Lupin.
"Oh no," said Hermione, looking very disappointed. "I've already finished it!"

"Is that really what my hair looks like from the back?"

Hermione : "If you're going to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us, too."
Sirius Black : "Only one will die tonight."

Hermione : "Ancient Egyptians used to worship cats, you know."
Ron : "Yeah, along with the dungbeetle."

"Come on Buckbeak! Come and get the nice dead ferret!"

"At least somebody's enjoying himself."

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

"S-P-E-W" said Hermione hotly. "I was going to put Stop the Outrageous Abuse of Our Fellow Magical Creatures and Campaign for a Change in Their Legal Status - but it wouldn't fit. So that's the heading of our manifesto."

He pointed one gnarled finger towards the door. Hermione went very pink, and muttered something about not meaning that she wanted to leave. Harry and Ron grinned at each other. They knew Hermione would rather eat Bubotuber puss than miss such an important lesson.

"Excuse me, I don't like people just because they're handsome!" said Hermione indignantly.
Ron gave a loud false cough, which sounded oddly like "Lockhart!"

"You can't Disapparate on Hogwarts grounds!"

"I hate that Skeeter woman! I'll get her back for this if it's the last thing I do!"

"What were you going to do, snore at them?"

"I caught her on the windowsill in the hospital wing. Look very closely and you'll notice the markings around her antennae are exactly like those foul glasses whe wears."

"Just because it's taken you three years to notice, Ron, doesn't mean no one else has spotted that I'm a girl!"

Ron [to a Veela]: "Did I tell you I've invented a broomstick that'll reach Jupiter?"
Hermione: "Honestly!"

Hermione: "Her-my-oh-nee."
Krum: "Herm-own-ninny."
Hermione: "Close enough."

"Malfoy's got detention! I could sing!"
