Mahavir took R&B's darling daughter up for her morning nap
II didnt follow like she usually did many weekends
Akka sent Shravu to M after his cricket camp
Sam sent Nandu, but Manny didnt make an appearance even then
II busied herself fixing lunch and cleaning the downstairs, running load after load of laundry
He called her on intercom a couple times, she didnt answer knowing it was him, but Ranjan answered and handed the phone to her
"Can you help me find my hiking boots please?" he said flatly
"Main yaha khaana bana rahi hoon"
"I thought we had help for things like that"
"And I thought you were self sufficient" she mocked
"Now that weve insinuated I am not, can you find them?" he asked without giving her credit
"Kaha ja rahe ho?" she asked glumly
"Come up" he ordered raggedly
She went up cautiously, Nivi was asleep on the master bed
The upstairs was toasty warm
He was texting leaning on the bed
"Last time you went on a hike with friends, you brought it back saying you no longer liked it" she mumbled
He nodded realizing she was right
"I dont like the blue one either" he told of the pair she now saw in the corner by his backpack
"Which blue one?" she mocked reminding him he had 10s of pairs of "hiking only" boots
"THAT blue one" he said She walked over and peered
"Kal mahavir ne kaha there was a shoe box in the many boxes that were delivered to you" she said preoccupied
On a daily basis, he ordered stuff, from who knew where and God knows what
"That was work shoes II" he said
Ranjan called her on intercom
"Gudiya bread maker shaayad tayar haiga puttar its beeping" he announced
"dad bus usko warm me set kar denge kya?" she requested
"I cant find any harness" her husband waved a short harness pulled out of his backpack
"Kon sa haiga warm?" he asked
Dad control panel mein "Home" ek baar tap karenge? Then aapko Warm Power Off karke 4 5 options dikhenge" she explained
Her FIL looked
She "tcched" at her husband's impatience
"Kidhar ja rahe ho?" she asked trying to sound like she didnt care
He dropped his backpack leaned on the wall and ogled... he wore khakhi cargo pants and a powder blue cotton shirt rolled up to his elbows
She blushed self consciously when she realized she was checking him out
ITS THE BARE FEET DI
IF HE WAS WEARING SHOES HE WOULDNT TURN YOU ON SO MUCH
I KNOW
DONT WORRY
IS HE BARE FEET?
AYYYO
AANDAVA
YIKES
She swallowed with a dry mouth
He didnt respond
"Mainu mileya nahi gudiya" Ranjan was apologetic
"Ayyo" she hissed frustrated
"Dad Mahavair ko bulayenge?" she asked
"Woh ik nalayak hamesha oopar baitha hoya hai, tu kewen saara din oopar?" he was upset
"HE CALLED ME" Ii accused
"Khotha" Ranjan cursed his son loud enough his son heard
"Ruk jara, huney laaya Mahavir nu" Ranjan said hanging up
R&B walked up closer
Their aching was palpable, she lowered her gaze and found his crisp clean toes
"Theek hai mat batao" she whispered "Go wherever"
The scent of soap and after shave accosted her nostrils... his arms/hands imprisoning her form to the wall
HE NEVER SHAVES
"WHERE" DID HE PUT AFTERSHAVE?
NO
DONT TELL ME
TMI
LALALALALALA
"I trimmed my sideburns" he said softly, bending down on her body. Enjoying the helpless gasp her lips let out.
Loud screams of "CHITHIII" and shattering glass floated up to their ears from the front lawn
He refused to step back
There was loud crying
She pushed him away and ran through the room to the balcony, Shravu and Nandu were on the lawn wrestling each other pulling their hair out
She didnt know they had broken the patio french window glass on one side and it had flown and slit Mahavir's forearm
Amma was in the shower, Appa was reading the newspaper on the ground floor patio
Turned out Shravu had flung his tennis ball angrily...
Ranjan was unfazed
R&B wandered down...
"There is no discipline" Appa started to rant sanctimoniously... "There are no rules in this house"
"Koi nahi Iyer saab, they are kids"
"What kids I say? They are almost 15" Appa was horrified
"Ishita Athimber ku pannu" (call athim) he ordered
II squirmed
She looked at R&B
"Dont look at me" R&B said coolly and turned and went back up
The moments upstairs when the two were on the verge of making up seemed like it happened eons ago...
