Chapter 12

Two days later Raman finds himself outside Ruhi's school once more. He's a bit early and the crowd of parents are yet to arrive. His eyes search for Ishita's familiar red car but it is clear to see that she isn't there yet. The disappointment hits him hard enough to momentarily throw him off course. He does not remember the last time he had felt such want for someone. It almost makes him turn around and leave, possibly return to Mumbai with its less disruptive offerings.

As the minutes trickle by, the crowd thickens. When the bell announcing the end of the school day is heard, the murmuring of the crowd has reached a cacophonous peak. Raman feels something within his chest settle. There is still no sign of Ishita.

And then the gate opens and the kids emerge, one or two or a dozen at a time. When Ruhi comes out, she doesn't see him at first. Her eyes are busy searching for the familiar face of her Ishita aunty. But when her eyes land on him, she yelps and makes her way straight for him. Raman feels his heart soar. Why doesn't he come here everyday?

Ruhi thinks that they are planning a big surprise for her and keeps asking him where Ishita is. She looks around him and at the car as if expecting the woman to pop out of the bonnet.

A few parents try to come up and make conversation with Raman Bhalla but the terse replies they get for their efforts does not make the exchanges too promising. When the boys, eternal stragglers that they are, emerge, Ishita is still not here. Raman is worried now but hides it well. They hang around him with an air of uncertainty. He reaches for his phone and makes the call.

It rings and goes into voicemail. He tries again.

"Should we head home?" he asks the kids. Ishita isn't answering her phone. He types out a message to her telling her that he is taking the kids.

The boys agree, halfheartedly. Shravan looks somewhat worried. But Ruhi is adamant.

"We can't leave without Ishita aunty! She promised she'll come to pick us up! She doesn't break her promises."

Ruhi's tiny face is red with her earnestness that mixes with anger. Raman looks at her and suddenly he feels like there is a bit too much of him in the child.

"Well, Ishita aunty hasn't come," Raman says, but there is no calming Ruhi down.

Shravan says they could go to the clinic. Raman looks at the boy. The boy meets his eye boldly. Quite the young man then.

They pile into the car and Raman ruefully watches the kids make themselves comfortable with their dusty feet sprawled across the swanky clean seats of his new BMW. He feels a new founded respect for Ishita.

They don't reach the clinic. Half way to the place, they find her car. She has the bonnet open and is yanking at something within. When they pull up, she turns and there is a look of utter shock on her face.

"What time is it?!" is the first thing Ishita says before Raman has taken three steps towards her.
Raman watches her face dissolve into panic followed by relief as the children surround her and peer at the engine parts like a bunch of mini sized mechanics.

"Can you figure out what the problem is?" Ishita asks anxiously as Raman studies the engine.

"Do you have a box of tissues?" He asks her in turn.

She nods and begins to move towards the car but he holds out his hand and stops her. Then Raman brings out the box and takes out some tissues. He hands them over to her.

"Wipe your hands!" he instructs.
As she is busy doing that, he calls Mihir and tells him to arrange for a service truck for Ishita's car. She looks at him bemused. He shrugs his shoulder.

"That's the best I can do for you right now."
"I though for a moment..." she begins.

"What?" He cuts her short, laughter dancing in his eyes. "That I'd fix your khatara car for you!"

Her eyes widen at his choice of words and she opens her lips to protest. But he has noticed a smudge of grease on her cheek and chooses that very moment to raise a finger to wipe it off. Whatever she was about to say dies in her throat as she feels his every ministration like fire on her skin. Raman is too busy wiping at the grease when he suddenly notices the red flush spreading under his finger. He removes his hand as if he had only then recollected himself. He pulls back and enjoys the crimson faced picture of confusion standing before him.

Ruhi tugs at his hand. The children with the certainty of a compass needle have spotted an ice cream parlor. With an unsaid agreement they all head towards the parlor. After all it will be a while till the service truck arrives.
Ishita is busy making phone calls explaining the present predicament to the worried families back in Mayur Vihar as Raman ushers the kids towards the counter. She returns when they have settled down at a table near the window with a good view of the street.

"I ordered for you," Raman tells her. He is already looking forward to her expression when what he has ordered finally arrives. She smiles and sits between Ruhi and Shravan.

She is seated so close to him and every fiber of Raman's body wants to simply reach out for her. His fingers still carry the silkiness of her skin on them and he wants to feel it once more.

The waiter arrives with their orders. The children have all shown great ambition in their choices. Ishita eyes the towers of scoops in shock. But then they place the bowl of kulfi before her. It is comical how her face falls and Raman bursts out laughing.

"That day I tasted your favourite flavour so today am returning the favor," he says between fits of laughter. She doesn't give away anything as she eats a spoonful. He watches her every move. The kids chatter away excitedly but Raman barely listens. It is only a few minutes later it seems to him that Ishita jumps up at the sight of the service truck. Sometimes, Raman curses, Mihir can be too efficient.

Once the car is towed away, Raman has to shepherd Ishita towards his car along with the kids. She looks almost distraught at the loss of her trusty steed. Ruhi settles down on her lap in the front seat while the boys lounge like little maharajahs on the backseat. Sensing Ishita's worry, with the uncanny ability of a child, Ruhi keeps up a continuous chatter of comforting words about the car's swift recovery. Raman listens in on this conversation with little surprise. His champ had done the same many a times when she had caught him in one of his moods. But this is the first he sees her do this to someone who is not her Papa.

Ishita slowly makes an effort to come down from her cloud of worry and by the time they reach Mayur Vihar, she is listening keenly to the accounts of the woes and joys of life in junior school. As they drive through the gates of their complex, Ruhi asks again, "You are not sad any more, Ishita aunty?"

Ishita smiles and hugging the girl close to her replies, "If Ruhi gives me a kiss now, I won't be sad anymore!"
Ruhi does so. The kids don't wait once the car is parked and the doors are opened for them. They race each other to see who reaches the row of buildings first. Ishita is about to leave as well when Raman calls her back.
"I never knew a kiss could work such magic," he says, heady from the proximity they had shared all afternoon.
She looks at him in wide eyed wonder for a second before the flush overtakes her cheeks again. Raman looks on mesmerized. She stutters a little when she replies, "You just have to believe in it a bit more then."

And with that she is gone leaving Raman with a vivid memory of her parting blush. He knows for certain now she isn't unmoved by him and he feels the euphoria of the hunter who knows the prey is his for the taking.

Chapter 13

That evening Raman finds it hard to settle down to his evening's task of reading up on the company's latest acquisition. The leaves on the tree outside his window rustle and he finally gets up from his seat. Stretching, he moves towards the window. The breeze carries on it the whiff of spring. He peers up at the sky. He can make out a few stars. Perhaps on the terrace he would get a better view?
No sooner the thought hits him than he is out of the apartment and climbing up the stairs to the roof. On the way he meets no one. City life has no time to spare for random excursions to the terrace.

However, once he reaches the terrace, it is not the stars that his eyes seek out. There before him, leaning against the parapet is none other than Ishita Iyer.

She is lost in thought and doesn't notice him. Her hair is still tied in the braid she had this afternoon but since then she has changed out of the salwar suit. Now she wears a pale sort of cotton saree that stands out in the semi-darkness. His heart races.

When Raman walks over to her, she gives a visible start.

"Thinking of someone?" he asks.

The distant lights of the lampposts create a soft halo around them.
Ishita feels an awkwardness descend upon her. She doesn't quite understand this man. He is polite to her and yet there is something in his behavior that at once excites her as well as sets her on edge. Something within her tells her to leave immediately but that would be rude and she lingers.

"It's a lovely evening," she says, turning her face away.

"Makes you want to believe in magic," Raman says, his voice gravelly.

The words seem to move under her skin. She feels her face heating up and is thankful for the cover of darkness. The afternoon's exchange is still vividly etched on her mind.

Raman watches her, her face turned away, fingers fidgeting with her saree pallu and something in him feels a surge of elation. He reaches forward and takes her hand.

This makes her look at him. He sees her eyes widen in surprise. She makes a soft sound that could mean anything and he pulls her close without hesitation, till she is flush against his chest. His other arm encircles her waist of its own accord, and she is within his grasp finally. Just the way he had imagined a hundred thousand times in moments both of dreaming and wakefulness. But she feels a hundred thousand times more real now, softer, firmer, less of a siren and more of a woman.

Ishita gasps when he takes her hand. For some time now, she had thought this man different from all her other Delhi acquaintances. That he was a man, was something she had almost always been acutely conscious of. This was nothing like what she had felt for Subbu. That had been homely, expected and grounded firmly to the mundane. This!?! This was something else. When he stood before her, she felt a thrill which she could not explain. This was because from the first time she had laid her eyes on him she had felt just the hint of something deeper, darker lurking within him. It ought to have scared her. Instead it made her savour these brief encounters with this powerful man who seemed to belong to a world very different from hers.

She wants to protest, to take away her hand from his gentle hold. But before she can do so, he has pulled her close and she is in his embrace. His arms encircle her and a distinctly masculine scent fills her senses. The world dissolves away and all she feels is the pressure of his arms around her body and that elusive smell that seems to seep into her very skin. She doesn't protest because the assault on her senses is too over-powering. It sends tremors of some unknown, unfamiliar emotion through her body. She is unable to think, unable to process what is happening.

It is as he lifts a finger and ever so gently tucks a strand of hair behind her ears, that the spell is broken. She twists out of his hold and takes a step back. He doesn't notice the shift in her and simply steps forward, reaching out once more. But now she is alert and ready to attack.

"What are you doing, Mr. Bhalla!?!" she hisses at him. Her breathing comes erratic and her words come out in gasps.

Raman seems unfazed. "You can't deny you want this, Ishita," he murmurs. Is that a smile she sees at the corner of his lips?

"But I'm married!" she splutters out, trying to make sense of a nightmarish situation.

"So?" he asks. How is he so calm?! She looks at him and suddenly feels like she had been playing with fire all this time! This was no ordinary man! He was a monster!

She backs away from him but ends up against the wall.

"I am a married woman, Mr. Bhalla and what you are doing is inappropriate," she enunciates each word forcefully, trying to school her voice into a calmness that she was far from feeling.

Raman stands before her, his hands tucked into his pocket. He sighs as she speaks, as if what she is saying has no logic.

"I don't see why you are making such a big deal out of this!" he says finally. "You being married shouldn't come in the way of you being attracted to me and since I too find you quite attractive, I don't see what stops us from acting on this--" he leaves the rest of his words hanging in the air, unsaid but powerful nonetheless in their unvoiced presence.

Ishita feels hot, cold and then hot again as his words wash over her.

"Attracted to you?!" she bursts out. "Don't nurse such presumptions Mr. Bhalla! I don't feel anything for you! I am very happily married !"

Raman strides forward and she suddenly finds herself caged in by his hands that rest on the walls, either side of her shoulders. He isn't touching her, but his looming presence is too intense to ignore.

"You don't feel any attraction,eh, Mrs. Ishita Iyer?" he asks. He speaks with a softness that belies the menace of his words. "Don't make me call you a liar."

Ishita feels a red hot anger fill her. It is the culmination of everything she has experienced in this cold heartless city. Fraud, cheat, destroyer of families, liar! That is what she had become in the eyes of those she called family. Worthless, ugly, unworthy of love or respect...that's what she was to those she was closest to. And now someone who was practically a stranger thought it fit to hurl the very same abuses at her!

She takes him by the shirt and pushes him back. Raman staggers before balancing himself. Her eyes blaze as she speaks, "I don't care what you call me! There is nothing between us and there is nothing you can do to change that!"

Raman watches her, stunned, as she whirls around and leaves the terrace. His mind races from shock to anger to a need to answer the challenge in her words. The pliancy of her body as she rested in his embrace had set his body and mind ablaze. That was no lie and he is determined to prove it to her.

'So you think you can lie and get away. Mrs. Ishita Iyer,' he thinks to himself. "You clearly have no idea who you are dealing with."

A/N: Thank you all for finding something to like in this story. It is darker than anything I've ever written before and so am a little apprehensive about what I am writing. I would be really grateful if you let me know if I am successfully being able to keep that balance between seduction and undesirable force.

Love you all, everyone who has left those encouraging comments and those who left likes. It does give me so much happiness to know that you find it entertaining enough to read.
