I always thought that Abhishek was a good supporting actor but he's also been absolutely fantastic in some films as the lead (Guru is one that immediately comes to mind, along with Bunty aur Babl and Bluffmaster).
I mean up until Drona, he was doing really well and his star was rising rapidly.
I think he just needs to work on the roles he chooses more. He's always phenomenal when it comes to comedy. But he tends to go for dramatic roles in which he is a hit or miss b/c its not his strongest suit.
