Sonam and Rajiv Rai's marriage hit the rocks after they moved back to India and the two decided to part ways after 25 years of togetherness. Rajiv was even quoted by Times of India and confirmed the news of mutual consent for divorce that was filed for earlier this year. The filmmaker said, "We decided to go in for a legal separation in June last year. The petition for divorce by mutual consent was filed on January 21 this year. Sonam and I didn't have a showdown or argument. We've never had any verbal disagreements over this decision. There is no specific reason why things didn't work out for us. We were trying hard to make our marriage work but somewhere along the way it collapsed. It isn't anyone's fault."
Rajiv and Sonam fell in love during the making of Tridev movie, and after three years of relationship, they decided to get married on January 21, 1991. During that time, Sonam was at the peak of her career, but the gorgeous diva gave up her acting career for good. Rajiv is the son of famous producer Gulshan Rai who made films like Mohra, Gupt and Tridev. During the same time, Rajiv was targetted by the underworld and attacked outside his office. Soon he decided to leave India. Later on, Sonam and Rajiv settled in Los Angeles and then shifted to Switzerland along with their son Gaurav. But a few years ago, the two moved back to Mumbai but have been living separately since 2011.
Rajiv added saying, "In these 15 years we went for holidays together where we stayed in separate rooms. We've traveled to different parts of the world for our son's education. Sonam and I held on to this marriage for so long, as we were waiting for our son to turn 18. He is 23 today and has accepted our decision with a lot of maturity. Had he vetoed it, we wouldn't have gone ahead with it. Instead, he said that both of us have every right to live our individual lives. The doors of both our houses are open for him, and it is up to him to decide who he wants to stay with. In fact, right now he is working with my production house. She has been a good wife and mother, and I have no complaints. Don't be surprised if you spot us in a restaurant having lunch together,' says Rajiv.
Sonam who moved to the Mumbai suburbs of Andheri with her son soon met a friend, Murali Poduval in Puducherry, who is a divorcee and a businessman. The two fell in love and decided to tie the knot. Sonam was asked by Bombay Times, if she is still in touch with her ex-husband Rajiv, to which the diva said, "I'm not in touch with him, but I'm sure he knows. I don't want to comment anymore as it's in a personal space and I only want to speak about the happiness that I'm feeling now." Sources say that Sonam wanted to make a comeback in the Bollywood industry, but Rajiv was not happy with this decision.
A close source also said that "A lot of heated arguments happened between the two over her decision to restart her acting career in Bollywood. She had even started getting feelers from big filmmakers and was desperate to come back to Mumbai and start acting again. The couple mutually decided to stay separately. Rajiv is hoping to make a comeback with a big budget multi-starer film and is presently busy with its planning. Sonam meanwhile is trying to negotiate terms with all those who have shown a keen interest in working with her."
Speaking on her comeback, Sonam said that, "Well yes, I have a few offers and I plan to do movies again. There are some projects which are under negotiation, so I will wait before talking about them." She further added saying, "Right now, I'm enjoying love and honeymooning."
