Top 10 Actors of 2007
2007 has seen many great performances from the male actors in Bollywood. The year has shown us that we have an abundance of talent in the industry and it spells for a good future. In order to come up with the top actors of the year, we have looked at their performances, success, impact on the industry, and how much they made headlines. Since there were so many actors who made a great impact this year, unfortunately we had to omit some capable candidates. People who just missed the cut are Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Govinda, John Abraham, Shiney Ahuja, Nana Patekar, Kay Kay Menon, Sharman Joshi, Ritesh Deshmukh, Kunal Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Pankaj Kapoor, Boman Irani, and Darsheel Safary. Hrithik Roshan could not be added to the list because he had no films on the year. Well here is the list we here at Bollyspice have come up with:
Akshaye Khanna
Although Akshaye may not have tasted box office success this year, his work has been widely appreciated. Salaam-E-Ishq, Naqaab, and Gandhi My Father all flopped, but Akshaye did not bear the brunt of any of these film's failures. He was considered the best thing in all of these movies, which goes to show he can rise above any film. Also, he was seen in a cameo in Aaja Nachle, for which he was also appreciated. In Gandhi My Father, he gave perhaps the best performance of his career, and that alone warrants him on this list. 2008 is looking even better for him in terms of success, with the releases of Race and Shortcut.
Shahid Kapoor

This was a turning point year for Shahid. He starred in Jab We Met, which was the surprise hit of the year, and what just may have catapulted him into the top tier of the industry. He also had Fool N Final, which failed, but after his mature performance in JWM, producers are lining up to sign this young talent. He was also making headlines for his breakup with long time beau, Kareena Kapoor, so he was not gone from the public's mind. For 2008, he has long delayed Milenge Milenge coming up, as well as Kismet Konnection.
Saif Ali Khan
One man's loss is another man's gain. Shahid lost his lady love, Kareena, to Saif. Saif's hook up with Kareena was one of the hottest gossips in the latter part of the year. It helped Saif stay in the headlines and also helped people keep their attention on him. But it wasn't all fun for Saif, as he did some pretty solid work as well. He starred in Eklavya, for which he garnered much adulation for. He also starred in the Ta Ra Rum Pum, which failed at the box office, but his work in the film was still appreciated. He has started his own production house now and we can expect a film from him within a year or two. As for 2008, he has a nice lineup ahead with Race, Tashan, Roadside Romeo, and Kunal Kohli's next.
Sanjay Dutt
He perhaps made the biggest headline in the industry for the entire year. Sanju was sentenced to jail for six years for possession of weapons way back in 1993 and nothing made a splash in the industry quite like this. As a matter of fact, the industry was at a standstill when it happened. Luckily, he is out on bail now and has resumed work again. Speaking of work, his work this year wasn't too shabby. He started the year with Eklavya, in which his role was small, but many felt he was the scene stealer whenever he appeared on screen. Then he was seen in Shootout at Lokhandwala, in which he gave a terrific performance and helped the film become a success. Then he starred in Dhamaal, which gave him yet another hit and Dus Kahaniyaan, which was a failure, but got him credit for trying something different as he produced the film, along with buddy Sanjay Gupta. For 2008, he has lined up EMI, Mr. Fraud, Kidnap, Aladdin, and Alibaug.

The year was a roller coaster ride like no other for the Godfather. Although he was in the news for all the wrong reasons, his work was as good as ever. He started the year off with Eklavya, which was considered to be one of the greatest performances of his career. Then he starred in the film Nishabd, which because of its bold theme failed, but his work was thought to be wonderful. Then he starred in Shootout at Lokhandwala and Cheeni Kum, which both turned out to be hits. He had a small role in SOAL, but in Cheeni Kum it was his show as he gave a great and understated performance. Then he starred in the all time debacle RGV Ki Aag, in which he was the lone bright spot. Most of his films did not work, but his work was appreciated in all of them. For 2008, he has coming up, The Last Lear, already garnering him superb reviews from festivals, Bhootnath, Aladdin, God Tussi Great Ho, and Sarkar Raj.
Abhishek Bachchan

The first half of the year clearly belonged to him on screen, as well as, off screen. He gave what was perhaps the performance of the year in Guru. Then, he followed that up by announcing his engagement to Aishwarya Rai. After that, the only news you would hear from Bollywood was of the golden couple and their marriage announcements. When the marriage day finally came, they were the only news in the industry, and Abhishek was in top of the world personally and professionally. His wedding caused much controversy and that brought on a bit of a dip for his year. Next he starred in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, which was a total failure, even though he was thought of being solid in the film. After that, he had a small cameo in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, which also failed at the box office. A year that started off as a bang, but ended with a whimper caused him to fall on our list, but a fantastic performance along with the biggest story of the year cannot be ignored. 2008 has him starring in Sarkar Raj, Drona, Delhi 6, and the next for Dharma Productions.
Irrfan Khan

Here is the man who was quite the international star this year. Although he may not have caught many headlines, he was the only actor who made it to the big league of Hollywood this year. Along with a successful Metro, for which he won great accolades, and a small role in Aaja Nachle, Irrfan also starred in The Namesake and A Mighty Heart, along with a small role in The Darjeeling Limited. All three of those films were Hollywood productions. Irrfan made a huge impact in both The Namesake and A Mighty Heart, and is now a known commodity in Hollywood. A man who is quite the underrated actor, he just keeps on doing his work and keeps on delivering fine performances. He has recently bagged Mira Nair's Shantaram, in which he will star alongside Johnny Depp and Amitabh Bachchan. As for 2008, he has Sunday and Krazzy 4 to look forward to.
Aamir Khan

Aamir was a three in one this year, as he played the role of actor, director, and producer- all for the same film. Taare Zameen Par has become a landmark film in our industry and it is because Aamir has his fingerprints all over it. Although, he was involved in only one film this year, it was, arguably, the best film this year. Aamir acted effortlessly as always, but it was his direction that caught everyone by surprise. Aamir showed that he is fully capable of being one of the top most directors in our industry and it just goes to show how much of an impact he is having in the industry. Other than that, he was in the news for the ailment and treatment of his mentally ill brother, which was perhaps the only low point for him this year. Aamir known for only doing one film at a time, has only one film lined up for 2008. It is the remake to Ghajini.
Akshay Kumar

No one smelled success this year quite like Akki. He had four films this year and all four films were huge hits- a 100% record. We haven't seen a success rate like that since the glory days of Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Oh yes, Akshay is definitely in elite status now. Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Welcome all proved to be big money spinners, but they also brought much praise for Akshay for his performances. He has become the most dependable actor in the industry as anything he stars in now becomes a hit. It was a peachy and rosy year for Akki, as there were no headline controversies to speak of. Akshay hopes to build on a superb 2007 with an equally impressive 2008 when he will feature in Tashan, Singh is Kinng, Eight by Ten, and Chandni Chowk to China.
Shah Rukh Khan

The king has reclaimed his throne. After a couple of years in which he was not the top dog, SRK is once again on top of the mountain. In terms of making headlines, he made big news for the little joke he pulled on Manoj Kumar in the film Om Shanti Om, as well as his ongoing "cold war" with the Big B and the legal notice he received for smoking in public. But none of that affected him as his films gather bigger headlines than anything else, especially the heated Diwali competition he had with Saawariya. Professionally, this may have been SRK'S most successful year ever. The two movies he featured in, OSO and Chak De India were the two biggest hits of the year. Not only that, but OSO is about to become the biggest hit of all time. As for performances, OSO was SRK playing to the masses, but it was CDI that caught everyone's eye. SRK delivered one of the best performances of his career and the whole nation started chanting Chak De! 2007 is a year SRK will never forget. 2008 has SRK in cameos in Bhootnath and Dulha Mil Gaya. It seems it will be a quite year for SRK, as no full fledged films are scheduled for him. But for 2007, he is on top of the mountain!
