Ch 13

{A New Morning}

It would not be false if we say that Khushi was not a T.V. person. For the first time during her stay with Arnav, she had picked up the remote of the television, but it was put back in its place within ten minutes of switching channels. She tried to distract herself, or rather say, occupy herself in something, because apparently, an idle mind brought back negative thoughts.

She stood from the couch and wandered about to Arnav's room, where the servant was cleaning the room.
She decided to help him, at least in cleaning the upper shelves of Arnav's wardrobe.

"Hari Prakash ji, I'll do that, please," she politely asked the aged servant, gaining a hesitant nod from him. Arnav had left in the morning after the breakfast, leaving an order to the servant to clean his room.

"Let me do it, Khushi bitiya," the servant insisted, but Khushi had already started her work.

The small stool carried her weight, while she handed over the contents of the uppermost shelf to the servant, giving him time to place it on the bed. Just when the last lot of the files and folders was left to be shifted, a clear plastic pouch slipped from the top and crashed on the floor.

Hari Prakash picked it up and placed it on the bed, and Khushi's eyes followed the movement. She ignored her curiosity to check the packet for the time being, concentrating on the cleaning process.

Once she was done with putting the cleaned stuff back into its place and the servant had occupied himself in cleaning another corner of the room, she picked up the pouch. It had a hospital's name printed over it and she faintly remembered it to be the one where Arnav had taken her when she had fainted in front of his car. She opened it and surprise washed over her. It had some black beads strung together with a pendant into a thread, her mangalsutra.

The moment her fingers felt the rough texture of the beads, something moved inside her. It felt like all the air was being sucked out of her and she immediately let it fall back into the packet, shaking her head vigorously to not let the dark memories find a place back in her head. She took a deep breath, sealed the pouch again and put it back in Arnav's wardrobe, before leaving the room.

She went straight to her room, her breathing deep and difficult. She wondered how at this time, she was so clear about her decision. When she cannot bear the mere sight of her very own marital chain, then it would be foolish to even think about spending the rest of her life with Shyam. When she was so sure that there was not any existence of love between both of them and she hated him for what he did to her, then she would be a moron to expect love to rekindle in their relation. Her vows, her promises were made to a different person altogether, for she knew that the Shyam she fell in love with, cannot be even put at comparison with the Shyam who raped her.

*

"Khushi auntie!" she heard Mish scream from the living room and her face brightened up.

"How was your day?" Khushi asked, picking up Mish in her arms as soon as she entered the living room. She sideways looked at Arnav and smiled slightly.

"Great!" Mish grinned, while Khushi placed her down on the dining table, "You know I came first in sac race. Neena was so jealous. I will beat her in the lemon race also!"

"Don't worry about Neena," Khushi said, taking the plate from the servant to feed Mish, "You only concentrate on running and finishing the race."

"Will you come to cheer me?" Mish asked, chewing the pasta in her mouth, while Khushi uncertainly looked at Arnav.

"Sure, babygirl! We both will come," Arnav answered, ruffling her hair and she grinned. He glanced at Khushi who too smiled. It would be the first time when she would go out of the farmhouse ever since Arnav brought her there. A feeling of irresolution still hovered over, but she was ready to do anything to be at peace.

Mish grabbed the plate from Khushi's hands and ran to the living room to enjoy her food while watching television, whereas Khushi moved back to the kitchen to heat lunch for Arnav and herself.

*

They were seated on the stairs around the ground of St. Mary's School, waiting for the event to start. Parents occupied the whole of the place, cheering for their kids.

"Comfortable?" Arnav asked, handling her a juice can, looking at the stall under which Mish was instructed about the rules of the race. Khushi nodded slightly and took a sip from the can.

The race started, ten girls in a row starting to move forward with a lemon placed in a spoon held in their mouth. Mish's eyes concentrated on the lemon, while the girl just next to her dropped the spoon along with the lemon. Just near to the finishing line, only three girls were left with their lemons still held on their respective spoons. Mish finished second and Arnav stood up and cheered for her loudly.

"You played so well, princess!" Arnav scooped her up in his arms as soon as the parents were allowed to meet the children.

"We are proud of you!" Khushi pinched her cheeks and grinned with her.

*

Khushi looked out of the window, her gaze settling on a particular hotel for some seconds and that didn't go unnoticed by Arnav. They were travelling back to the farmhouse after having lunch with Mish, who had fallen asleep on the back seat of the car.

"You've been there?" Arnav asked, startling her. He felt weird how she would startle every time he called out for her. She would be lost in her own world, yet very attentive.

Khushi looked at him and then her gaze went back to the scenery outside the window, "I used to work there, under a culinary chef. I could work for just a week before that night.."

"Shh, I know," he reached out for her hand and gave it a light squeeze, "Do you want to get back to working?" He thought about it for a moment himself, whether she would be safe or not; but then, she needed some change. Her mind needed to be distracted from going around the same feelings of self-hatred and despair again and again.

"Can I?"

"Why do you think you need my permission? Or, for that matter, anyone's permission?"

"He hated when I worked," her voice choked.

"Khushi, first, I am not Shyam," he stopped the car on a side, turning towards her, "and second, it's your life, your decisions."

She studied the stern expression on his face, realising how different was this man from her husband. She was disappointed by herself to put the two in comparison, because what Arnav was, Shyam would never be.

Arnav sensed the tension and tried to lighten up the mood, "And don't you get tired of sitting idle at home?"

"I'm ready," she said, after a moment, looking straight into his eyes. It wasn't a tough decision, for she loved her job and she needed a way to repay Arnav for everything he had given her in this whole month. And, he was right; she was tired, not of sitting idle, but of thinking about her past life. Some distraction would definitely help her mind to be at peace.

Arnav smiled and tucked a loose hair strand behind her ear, letting his hand linger there for a few seconds. He looked ahead and took a u-turn.

Time to put everything back in place.

*

A week passed in clearing out the formalities. Khushi's earlier job was renewed and she seemed pretty satisfied with it, which lowered down Arnav's level of uncertainty. Anjali and Varun were back from Bangalore and Mish was sent back to the Raizada Mansion.

"I'm waiting for you in the car," Arnav informed her with a knock at her door and swirled the keys around his index finger.

"Just a minute more, I'm coming!" Khushi said out loudly, before picking up her bag and running out of the door. Just as she was about to leave the place, she stopped and walked back to her room, emerging back after a minute, with a brown packet held in her hands. She kept it on the dining table, stared at it for a moment, sighed and then moved out.

"I could have managed," she said, tightening the seat belt around her, "Arnavji?"

"No, Khushiji, it's fine," Arnav replied, holding back a smile.

Khushi looked at him amused, feeling awkward at the new suffix added to her name.

"What?" he grinned from ear to ear, "You call me Arnavji, so I'll call you Khushiji. We're friends, so it has to be same-same!"

Friends.

"But it sounds so awkward!" she wriggled her eyebrows, breaking into a soft chuckle.

"Do you care how I feel? No! You only think about yourself!" He said, mocking seriousness, trying his best to not to laugh.

He looked over to Khushi's side when they stopped at a red-light, and fell in love with her all over again. Her head was bowed down and deep red colour crept up her neck to the apples of her cheeks, the sunlight from the window pane making her shine. She was blushing!

"Alright," she shook her head and looked at him, finding him looking at her already. The blush deepened. "Arnavji.. I mean Arnav.."

"Good" he smiled, clearing his throat to clear out his present thoughts. It surely was not the best topic to think about right then. He stopped the car in front of the hotel, turning towards her. He held her hand in between both his hands and smiled. "All the best, for your new life," he whispered so softly that it was almost inaudible, but enough for her to understand. She flashed a grateful smile in return and opened the door to get out of the car.

He stared at her retreating back for a few seconds, before she entered into the huge glass building. Shaking off any negative thoughts, he drove back to the farmhouse.

*

He was about to go back to his room to get ready, when his eyes fell on a brown packet resting on the table. Confusion filled his veins and he immediately opened it up to reveal the divorce papers. They were the same, with just one change.

It had a signature done on the right corner of its front page.

Khushi Manohar Jha.
