Chapter One
Three years later...
Arjun paced the room angrily, talking on the phone. "Saanjh... look you're irritating me now."
Saanjh replied through the phone. "Arjun, I told you I can't be there. My flight has been delayed, yaar. I won't get there until after 10 tonight, if it doesn't get delayed again. I may have to spend the night here."
"Dusky... I swear to God, if you're not here I'm postponing everything." Arjun finally stopped pacing, "I am getting married tomorrow. And you're not gonna be here? Nope... I'm postponing it. And I'll tell Maya it's because of you so you can suffer the wrath of Maya Mehrotra."
"Arjun, don't be stupid."
"Saanjh, don't be irritating. You have to be here for the wedding nahi to wedding canceled."
"Arjun!"
"Saanjh!"
"Oh my God, tu hamesha duffer ka duffer his rahega na?" Saanjh exclaimed.
Suddenly there was a deafening silence. Neither said a word, as Arjun raked his hand through his hair with a sigh.
"Arjun?"
"No... please call me duffer again. I had not realized how much I missed you calling me that." Arjun sat on his bed with a teary smile. "Please Dusky... you can't not be here for my wedding. Please aja. I miss you."
"Duffer... do you even know how to do anything but make me cry?" Saanjh sniffled. "I want to be there... I really really do. But flight is delayed. I can't do anything about it."
Arjun got up and started pacing angrily again, "I was not kidding Dusky. I am not doing this without you. If you're not here, no wedding!"
"No... wedding?" Maya paused at the doorway, with shock in her eyes.
Panicked, Arjun got up swiftly and walked over to Maya to stop her before she stormed out angrily. "No Maya... I-"
"Maya? Arjun, you're talking to Saanjh." Saanjh said from the phone.
"Dusky, shut up. I'm talking to Maya." Arjun replied, then looked at the hurt and anger in Maya's face. "Maya, look. I didn't mean no wedding like I don't want to marry you. I do... I really really do. But you know... Saanjh's flight got delayed and so she may not be able to make it until late tomorrow or even the day after and so I was just""
"Arjun, give me the phone." Maya interrupted his ramblings, and held her hand out.
"Hello, Saanjh?"
"Maya... hi. Please don't be mad at Arjun. Like he said, he really really""
"Saanjh, you don't have to be Arjun's lawyer. I know we're going to get married tomorrow, and I know he really REALLY wants to marry me." Maya replied, with venom dripping from her voice as she emphasized the really. She was also glaring at Arjun the whole time. "He also really wants YOU here so I'm going to send my private plane to come get you. I will have Rahul call you, and give you the details. You should be able to get here before the wedding."
"Oh... Thank you Maya. I uh""
"Goodbye Saanjh." Maya hung up on Saanjh and gave Arjun the phone back. "She'll be here before the wedding." Maya tried to turn away from him, but he was still holding on to her wrist tightly. "Arjun... let go of me."
"Maya..." Arjun almost whispered her name. He pulled her to him slowly, but she refused to turn towards him. So, he pulled her back to his chest, and then letting go of her arm, wrapped his arms around her waist. "I love you. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."
Gritting her teeth, she tried to squirm out of his arms. But she could feel her anger fading away, and felt herself leaning against him. "I hate you. You were willing to cancel our wedding for HER."
Arjun smiled. "I love you." He pressed a kiss to her head and trailed kisses down her face and to her neck. "I love you."
"Now you're just trying to distract me." Maya closed her eyes and moved her head to give him better access to her neck.
"Mmm..." Arjun continued to trail kisses along her neck and her shoulder. He slowly turned her around to face him. The anger in her face was replaced with something softer. She looked happy, but he knew his Maya and even though she may look calm, there were things going on in her head that would blow up later.
"Now..." he said as he took her arms and wrapped him around his neck, and pulled her closer. All of her was touching all of him. He lifted her slightly, making her stand on her tippy toes so that her face was level with his. "How dare you, future Mrs. Maya Sharma, for thinking I would actually cancel our wedding?"
Maya's eye widened as she was expecting romance, and not to talk about what happened just a few minutes ago.
Arjun watched as anger crossed her eyes, and she was stiff again. He smiled internally.
"Let me..."
"In this lifetime, I will not be letting you go." Arjun said, pulling her even closer to him. "So, you may as well stop struggling."
Maya fumed. "Arjun" She squirmed some more.
"Yes please... squirm some more. You can feel yourself what is happening to me when you squirm like that, can't you?" Arjun chuckled as Maya blushed profusely. She finally stopped struggling and gave him an icy glare.
"Ah, my ice queen." Arjun leaned closer to her, and kissed her. "I do know how to melt her though." He leaned in for a second kiss. "Now... Back to what we were talking about. How dare you think I would cancel our wedding."
Maya was disoriented. Her emotions always went haywire when she was with Arjun. In the last 10 minutes, she had gone from extreme anger, to bitterness, to relaxation, back to anger, and then utter bliss. At this very moment, she had no idea how she felt anymore.
"Arjun Sharma, you confuse me." She pressed a face to his chest, and breathed in his scent. He was wearing the cologne she had gifted him for his birthday last year. "You know I need constant validation, and I hate myself for it. But it's really hard to think you care about anyone or anything else." Maya wrapped her arms closer around him. "I don't know if I will ever be completely okay with your friendship with Saanjh. That insecurity will always be there. So, the fact that you were talking to her..." Maya sighed, "And... and you said..."
"And I said No wedding... I'm sorry." Arjun pressed another kiss to her head.
Maya closed her eyes and thought about the past three years to herself, three years ago she had confessed her love to this man, a year ago they had moved in together, and now here they were, the day before their wedding.
While everyone else though she was crazy, and too possessive, and could get too angry, Arjun patiently sat through her tantrums, and her craziness and continued to love her. It was strange... and there were times when she suspected he was doing something behind her back and yet... in her heart she knew he loved her and only her. He loved this damaged, bitter, crazy Maya.
"Why..." Maya mumbled later, as the two of them lay in bed cuddled close together. They were facing each other, their faces only inches apart.
"What?" Arjun yawned, then opened his eyes to meet Maya's puzzled eyes. "Why what?"
"Why do you love me?" Maya asked
"Because..." Arjun sighed, "Because you looked at me and saw me. Saw the man I was, and wanted to be when everyone else just saw the man I portrayed to be." Arjun shifted on his back, pulled Maya into his arms, and resting her head on his chest. "Because I looked at you and saw the future I had always wanted, and it felt like all my dreams were right there in my grasp." He cuddled her close, "Because everyone saw you as fragile, needing to be handled with care while I noticed the strength behind the fragility. I want to protect you, and be protected by you."
Maya had tears in her eyes as she wrapped herself closer to him. He never asked her why she needed to know, or get angry about how she's asked him this question every single night the past few weeks. And each time he gives her a different reason. Each night he tells her why he loves her, and for the first time in forever, she believes someone. She takes his word on it and knows it to be true.

"Ayan, go call the caterers, make sure everything is good for the reception later." Vandana yelled from the living room as she was checking the decorations for the wedding. "Suman! What are you doing here? You're in charge of the bridal part getting their make-up and hair done. Go, go check on them!"
Saanjh got out of the Taxi and stared at the house Arjun and Maya had bought for themselves. A year... it had been a year since she'd been here. A year ago, when Maya and Arjun had moved in together, it had been too much for her to handle and she'd just left. A whole year, she had been alone, just skimming through life. Being back here made her feel like she was living again.
She walked towards the house slowly. "Okay Saanjh." She told herself, "You and Arjun are best friends. You are going to go in, enjoy yourself, and then catch a flight back on the weekend. You're just here for a few days so you can do it!"
Just then, she ran into someone.
"Oh shit... I'm--Saanjh?" Ayan froze as he noticed he had bumped into Saanjh.
"Ay...Ayan. Hi." Saanjh said awkwardly.
Ayan swallowed a lump in his throat, and visibly held his head up high as he glared at Saanjh. "Hi."
Before Saanjh had a chance to say anything else, Ayan walked past her as if he had not just seen her in almost a year. Although... it hadn't been a year. She had seen Ayan just a few months ago. A few months ago when he... Saanjh shook her head. No, she wasn't going to think about it. It was about time Ayan grew up and thought things through himself.
"Saanjh, how long are you going to stand here by yourself? Talking to yourself?" She asked herself. "Just... go in. Okay here goes nothing..."
Vandana noticed Saanjh as soon as she walked in. "Saanjh?"
"Aunty.." With tears in her eyes, Saanjh ran to hug Vandana. Behind Vandada, she noticed Suman, and ran to hug her as well.
"Oh Saanjh, my baby." Suman held her daughter tightly. "You stayed away for so long... a year, Saanjh. Didn't you miss me? Miss us?"
"Ofcourse I missed you, Ma. I missed you all so much. Where's papa?"
Vandana and Suman both exchanged glances. "Saanjh, beta, why don't you go freshen up for now."
"But Ma, I wanna see Papa first." Saanjh sobbed softly, "I missed him... I missed him so much."
"He... he's not here sweetheart. He's at home." Suman sighed. "He's also a bit angry, so be patient."
"It's okay Ma, I need to go drop my stuff at home so let me know do that and I will be"" Before she could finish what she was saying. She felt an arm wrap around her waist and she was being hoisted in the air. "EEEKK" Saanjh shrieked. Who? What? Arjun.. It had to be Arjun, she thought.
"Duffer, put me down! Put me down!!!"
Arjun put her down on her feet and she started hitting him with her purse. "Ah, there's my Dusky. All that tears was making me uncomfortable."
Saanjh started laughing, and so did Arjun. Arjun pulled Saanjh in for a hug and hugged her tightly. Saanjh hugged him tightly as well.
Saanjh saw Ayan standing at the entrance of the house, with his fists clenched, and his teeth gritting. She could almost see him snarl at her before he turned around and walked out of the building. She sighed, "Oh Ayan..." she thought.
Arjun laughed as he put her down. "I am so glad you are here. Now go get your dad, and come right back. Okay?"
"Okay."
"Where did Ayan go?" Vandana said, and went looking for him. "Ayan!" she saw him standing outside the house, pacing restlessly. "Ayan, here are keys to your brother's car." She handed him keys. "Go take Saanjh to her house. She wants to drop her stuff off and talk to her father. Stay there until she's done, and then come back with both Saanjh and Prem. Understand?"
"Ma I am not a driver, why can't someone else take Saanjh? I am family, right? I should be here helping out." Ayan argued.
"You're family, that's why I'm sending you. Because Saanjh and Prem are family too." Vandana replied, "No do what I say. I have a lot of work in here." Vandana dismissed him and went back inside to find Saanjh. "Saanjh, I have told Ayan to take you home and bring you back. If you need anything else, tell him, okay?"
"Ayan?" Saanjh shifted uncomfortably. "But Aunty you guys probably need him here. I can just take a taxi."
"Oh please, don't start this with me again. Ayan is doing exactly what he needs to help out here. Now go, and hurry back with Prem."
"Okay..." Saanjh walked outside to see Ayan loading her luggage into the car. "Hi Ayan."
Ayan paused, and then went right back to what he was doing as if he didn't hear her.
"Ayan... I said hi." Saanjh said again.
"Hi." Ayan replied. Without another word he went and sat in the car, and waited for her.
Saanjh took a deep breath and looked at the sky, "Hey Bhagawan, today is going to be a very long day."
