Salman Khan made his first movie appearance with the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi, but many consider Maine Pyaar Kiya, released in 1989, his true debut as in Biwi Ho To Aisi, his voice was dubbed by someone else.

Maine Pyar Kiya became an overnight success, becoming one of India's highest-grossing films. The movie earned him his first award, Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, and a nomination, Filmfare Award for Best Actor. The movie was such a big success that it was dubbed in English as When Love Calls, in Spanish as Te Amo, in Telugu as Prema Paavuraalu, in Tamil as Kaadhal Oru Kavithai, and in Malayalam as Ina Praavukal. Its famous Friends cap became a rage at that time and many of its dialogues have been immortalized in Salman's top 50 dialogues.
For the next few years, Salman starred in several films, but the only other success to his name was the 1991 film Saajan starring Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit along with him. The film was a critical and financial success, but the film did not earn him any nominations or awards.

In 1994, Salman had 2 hit movies: Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Andaz Apna Apna. It took a while for Andaz Apna Apna to be recognized for the quality piece that it was, but today it is considered a cult film. On the other hand, Hum Aapke Hain Koun swept everyone off its feet and is considered one of the biggest Bollywood hits ever, while also being the most popular film of that year. While it didn't win Salman any awards or nominations, it won 3 Filmfare Awards and a National Award.

In 1995, he went on to star in Karan Arjun with Shahrukh Khan. The film became the second biggest hit of that year and got Salman another nomination in Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His other film, Veergati, failed to impress at the box office.
Over 1996 and 1997, Salman starred in 7 films. Of these, Dus was shelved after the director passed away mid-way through the shooting. Of his other 6 films, Judwaa was his biggest box office success and Khamoshi: The Musical was his biggest critical acclaim success, in these 2 years. David Dhawan is returning 20 years later with Judwaa 2 starring Varun Dhawan.
1998 saw 3 successful films: Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya earned him another nomination in Filmfare Award for Best Actor, while he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya was also one of the biggest commercial successes of that year. Recently, Karan Johar revealed that Salman had wanted to appear in torn jeans and a t-shirt in the very popular song "Sajanji Ghar Aaye" from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He had to get down on his knees and beg Salman to appear in the black suit that later went on to steal many female's hearts as they wished their own sajans would appear in that same suit.
Between 1999 and 2003, Salman starred in several films of which the only hits were Hum Saath Saath Hain, Biwi No. 1, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega. Hum Saath Saath Hain and Biwi No. 1 were the highest-grossing films and Biwi No. 1 got him a nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a critical and commercial success, along with its music, and earned him another nomination in the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega was considered ahead of its time and made critics take note of Salman Khan as well. The movie explored the topic of surrogate childbirth and starred Salman in a serious role as compared to many of his previous movies.

In 2003, Salman was at his finest with the hits Tere Naam and Baghban. Tere Naam is considered his biggest critically acclaimed performance till date. Both films earned him nominations in Filmfare Award for Best Actor and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
Between 2004 and 2009, Salman starred in several films with few hits. The hits were Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, No Entry, and Partner. All these films were comedy films and Salman became known for his comic timing. No Entry earned him a nomination in Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role.

2009 marked the turning point in Salman's career. With the release of Wanted, Salman marked his presence as a money making machine. While he still had a few flops to his name during 2009 and 2010, he had made his mark. From that period onwards, Salman starred in blockbuster film after blockbuster film. These are Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012), Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), and Sultan (2016).

Dabangg was released on Eid in 2010 and broke several box-office records upon release, becoming the highest opening week grossing Bollywood film, overtaking 3 Idiots. It became the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2010. It went on to win several awards including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. It was later remade in Tamil and Telugu. Salman was nominated for his sixth Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Ready became the second highest opening day grosser as well as the second highest weekend grossing Bollywood film, after Dabangg. It was also the second highest grossing Bollywood film of 2011. This was followed by Bodyguard, the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2011, thus securing the top 2 spots for Salman.
Ek Tha Tiger broke opening day box office records and marked Salman's first association with Yash Raj Films. The film broke the opening weekend net gross and entered the 100 crore club in just 5 days of release breaking Salman's own record of 7 days set by Bodyguard. Dabangg 2 became the biggest opener for a non-holiday Friday in India, beating the previous record held by Don 2. It also beat the record held by Ek Tha Tiger and eventually emerged as a huge financial success.

While Salman's first 2014 release Jai Ho was an average success at the box office, his second release Kick entered the 200 crore club. The film was the second highest non-holiday opening grosser behind Dhoom 3. It also became Salman's highest grosser in India, beating Ek Tha Tiger. There is a purported sequel in the making starring Salman Khan in double role.
2015 Eid saw the release of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which was a box office blockbuster and a critical acclaim. The film became the 8th consecutive Salman Khan film to gross over 100 crores. It also beat PK's record by grossing the highest amount in the first week alone. It was also Salman's first film to enter the 300 crore club. It is currently the second highest-grossing Bollywood film in India behind PK. On the other hand, Salman's Diwali release, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, was a box office record and became the 9th film to gross over 100 crores. With this film, Salman became the only actor to give 3 back-to-back movies which collected more than 200 crores domestically.
Finally, on 2016's Eid, Salman's latest film Sultan opened to critical and box office success. The film opened to an average of 70% audience occupancy and went on to become the third highest-grossing Bollywood film in India behind PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
