If you haven't seen it yet, please watch it. It is really important that we are aware of the horrible reality of gender-based violence.
I'm sure I don't need to explain why I linked this video to GK. I don't expect her to watch it, but maybe, if a miracle happens. There is no guarantee that it will impact her in any way, though any decent human being should be outraged by the statistics. It is so disheartening and infuriating that women around the world are so severely disrespected and abused.
TV shows should have a social responsibility to promote content that is progressive. This is very relevant in the Indian context, given the rate of assault (sexual and otherwise) in India. Yet, Indian television shows, like Ishqbaaz, continue to portray how acceptable it is to intimidate, threaten and subjugate a woman.
Irrespective of how strong and defiant Annika is depicted to be, the entire scheme of the forced wedding, the threat of rape, the physical manhandling was so completely inappropriate. Worse still, eventually, Annika will be shown to fall in love with her abuser. This, in my opinion, is so utterly disgusting.
Ishqbaaz sets a poor example for young men and women. It is not remotely sexy to blackmail and intimidate a woman into marrying you. It is not acceptable, for said woman to remain as his loyal, dutiful wife and continue to bear his neglect and emotional/physical abuse. It is depraved and sickening. And apparently a recurring theme for a majority of 4Lions shows.
So much for female empowerment, GK.
I don't watch Ishqbaaz anymore. I detest it so much that I don't even watch Star Plus, and nor do I visit the forum. I've only posted today because I can't take it anymore. I hate what they've done to Shivaay and Annika. I don't care that Shivaay will one day realise how terrible he is, and likely repent dearly. It would not redeem him at all because every time I think of Annika, I put myself or my sister in her shoes and I feel sick to my stomach. I feel nauseous at the thought of being forced to live with a man, who threatened to violate me.
In any case, I never had many expectations from GK. We can't change the way the writers have portrayed Shivaay and Annika, but I wish that the PH would watch that video and realise how important it is to respect women. I wish they would realise that from their position of power, they could positively influence viewers by educating them about the harsh reality of violence against women and why it is so completely unacceptable.
What happened to "Nayi Soch," anyway? 🤔
