Turmoil and triumph on STAR Plus

It was undoubtedly an eventful year on the small screen- SRK replaced the Big B on KBC, Smriti Irani quit Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Renuka Shahane made a comeback.
tar Plus began the year with Shah Rukh Khan hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati amidst speculation whether he will be able to effectively replace Amitabh Bachchan and weave his own spell. Not only did SRK connect with his audience, his KBC created a record of reaching 47 million viewers in the second week itself. Even as the SRK show was rocking on the channel, news came in that CEO Sameer Nair, the man who brought SRK on the show, was quitting. Within a month of the show coming on air, first Nair and then Peter Mukerjea quit.

Next in line was Smriti Irani who left Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. While Smriti alleged that she was asked to leave by Ekta, Ekta maintained that Smriti could come back anytime she wanted. In the meantime, Gautami Gadgil has neatly stepped into her shoes.

Another Ekta show that started facing problems is Kasauti Zindagi Kay when Shweta Tiwari's (Prerna) marriage was in trouble. Even Cezanne Khan quit the soap early, which itself will be going off the air soon. Kaahin To Hoga went off the air and was replaced by Kayamath. A couple of new shows Bidaai and Santaan too were launched this year.

With Gajendra Singh moving from Zee to Star, it was but obvious that he would launch musical shows. Star Voice Of India, a la Sa Re Ga Ma Pa was the first to roll out on the channel. He got with him the anchor of Sa Re..., Shaan to host Voice... Judges Alka Yagnik, Jatin-Lalit, Aadesh Shrivastava also swapped channels to be the judges on Star Voice... The contest had some good finds in Toshi, Abhas, Harpreet and Abhilasha. He's followed it up with Chhote Ustaad, the equivalent to Zee's Lil Champs. Abhas, a contestant of Star Voice... is hosting the show.

Nach Baliye which hitherto was aired on Star One for the first time moved to Star Plus in a bid to grab more eyeballs which was being lured away by rival channels. Though the season three couples were not as exciting as the first two, the show managed to capture eyeballs and was rated amongst the top five shows on the channel. Malaika Arora Khan and Saroj Khan gave the show a miss and were replaced by Isha Koppikar and Vaibhavi Merchant. David Dhawan came in place of Kunal Kohli.
