i got to thinking what is the connection or significance of the Halwa in this story. Maybe the connection is only in my demented mind😆 but nevertheless here is my interpretation of it.
Halwa seems to be a mainstay in this story. Or rather in Dev and Easwari story. They were dirt poor but halwa was made on those special occasions and it was Dev favorite. Mention has not been made about Neha, Riya or Nikki's favorite but let us stick with Dev's favorite the Halwa.

When Easwari is upset she makes Halwa and feeds it to Dev, when Easwari is happy she makes Halwa and feeds to Dev.. She was not very happy when Sona wanted to learn to make the H and was quite happy it turned out disastrously but when Dev criticized the H she came to Sona's rescue.

I tried to put my mother hat on and think what is this H connection. My children don't live with us but when they visit I always make their favorites. I am not sure if they still have the same tastes but I still make them they are happy I made them and eat it and that makes me happy. Makes me feel nothing has changed..not that I am scared of change infact I welcome it. But I am sure if my children say they don't care for the dish anymore because their tastes have changed I will be surprised too

My Mil was old fashioned and used to make a dish for my husband which he used to like when he was a kid..he grew out of it but when my Mil makes them he does not complain and still eats it. She was happy that he did because that dish bonded my husband to her and these were just their special memories and nobody else's

I know I am rambling but bear with me I am getting there..Easwari does not want change in her and Dev equation she is fighting tooth and nail for it but change is happening. But the halwa still ties them together to the past where the changes have not occurred yet. This maybe deeper than what the makers intended but I was just trying to think why so much importance to a sweet?

The day that Dev will refuse to eat the halwa or tell Easwari he does not care for halwa very much will be the day Both Easwari and Dev can accept that change is indeed here.

Thoughts or brickbats welcome

Dev has already refused to eat Halwa once! Remember after Neha's wedding when Sona asked him to watch his diet?

But didn't he eat a whole bowl full because his mother was upset?

I love Halwa. Suji ka halwa is my all time favourite. But Ishwari is by God ruining it for me.
Everytime she makes Halwa, she pours shudh desi ghee in her insecurity and blows up every situation.

And considering how Dev and Mama reacts after eating them, she might even add brain-eating bacteria or mind-altering drugs in it. Not that Dev needs much help in that situation.

Why doesn't she make Kheer for a change? Huh? For our peace of mind? Pretty please? With cashews on top?

Sabita,

You actually made a post on Halwa? The title got me thinking...oh gosh Ishwari has taken the remote control of our minds too with her Halwa 😆

Doesn't she make besan halwa and not sooji halwa? And every time I think of the recipe, I ask myself - how different would be a besan halwa than besan laddoos? Halwa is unbound (free form) besan laddoos? And yeah sooji halwa with pineapple / bananas is my favorite too, especially the kind made on Satynarayan pooja, because that special occassion sooji halwa has the kind of ghee that Easswari liberally uses. Though I literally puked everytime I saw her putting lumps of Dalda kind of ghee instead of shuddha desi ghee. Oh well... this much dissection of I's halwa goes to show how much impact her halwa has on us 😆

But, I get your point. I am sure irrespective of age and financial status when kids visit the family, mothers do not forget to make their favorite recipes. And between Dev-Ish I can understand the reason for Ish making the halwa on all those occassions in the past. In the present, I think that's one of her MAIN ways of assuring herself -"kuch nahi badla" 😒

I wonder many times - were Nikki and Riya or even Neha her unwanted kids? Like Ish & her hubby weren't aware of family planning? What was the hurry of having 4 kids back to back when there was not enough income to support all. Perhaps that B-Halwa was Dev's father's favorite too and the frequent making of that halwa resulted in this phooli phali goad of Ishu? 🤪

Sorry, don't mean to divert from THE HALWA 😃

I have actually made a post about family and retirement planning of Ishwari and her husband. The family planning methods are very well advertised in India and poor people have access to free stuff that is distributed through government channels. Even the middle class families can't take care of having 4 kids these days so I am not sure why did they have three more kids after Dev. Sometimes, in uneducated families they keep having babies till they have a male child but it was not the case for them either. Iswari tries to keep Sona and Dev apart with all her 9 day Pooja, tulsi puja etc. only if she had practiced some abstinence herself ! 😆

I personally don't like halwa but I feel sad for others who wud be reminded of Ish everytime they wud eat halwa 😆
Everyone has a fav dish n only their Mom can make it right..it happens with my husband too n I never try to compete with my MIL for tht as I fully understand coz for me no one can cook better than my mom.

One of mother's way of showing love is by cooking fav dishes...so Ish prepares halwa for Dev ..both Ish n Dev enjoy d moment. Dev listened to Sona once n did not eat halwa but the repercussion of this was way too big for Dev to deal. So halwa is Ish's sure shot trap to bring Dev back to his devi Ma...Sona can't even think of beating Ish in this dept n I hope she doesn't even try now.

But the bigger problem is both Ish n Dev dnt want to include Sona or any other family member in this special halwa ritual...n unless they include Sona...Sona wud try again n again n then if Dev wants to let go of the ritual...Ish wud take it as a betrayal n the guilt trip wud begin.
