PART 7

Arjun arrived at Raizada house in the evening.Khushi was watering the plants in the open verandah.Payal was helping her.Arjun got down from the car and went straight to them.

Arjun:Hai..

Payal:Hai..Arjun

Arjun:We just met on your wedding day,didn't get much time to talk.

He was looking at Khushi.

She was still watering the plants.

Arjun:I forgot your name..

Khushi:Khushi..

Three of them went inside.Others joined .Arjun became friends with Payal and Khushi and they were comfortable with him.When Arnav returned from office he saw Khushi and Arjun chatting at ease.

Arjun hugged Arnav and Aakash.

Ankitha :Arnav,please don't cheat me like yesterday..please do join us for dinner.

Arnav glared at Anjali.

Khushi felt uncomfortable.

Aakash tried to control laughter.Arnav went to his room,picked up the phone and called Aman.

Arnav:Aman,we'll have dinner outside.Get ready

Aman:Why..?

Arnav:No questions

Aman:Ok Boss

After a few minutes,he heard a knock on his door.

He opened it and saw Ankitha standing there.He could not control his anger.He asked:what do you want?

Ankitha:Why are you cross?

Arnav:I've some work to do.

Ankitha:Ok,,do your work..I'll keep company.

Arnav was fuming with anger.

He said politely: I want to be alone.

Ankitha:Why are you avoiding me Arnav?

Arnav:It's nothing like that.

He saw Anjali coming towards his room.

She said: Ankitha..Please do join us in arranging the table for dinner.

Anjali managed to send her down.

Arnav:Di..this is too much..her mother has not taught her manners.I know her intention.It won't work.And I'm going out with Aman.

Anjali:What can we do Arnav?They are our guests know?

Arnav:Then Di..I want to talk to you about Khushi..I intend to give her work in our firm.

Anjali was too happy:really?

Arnav:Yes..let her work from home.She can come to the office in the initial stages and later weekly once only.

Anjali:I'm happy chote..she is a good girl.

Arnav:And You and Raj have to shift here.Raj's health also is adversely getting affected.

Anjali:I was thinking the same.

Arnav:We'll arrange a care taker at his home.Please contact his parents and tell me.

Anjali:Ok,chote...Then one question..why did you decide to give work to Khushi?

Arnav:I saw her work and I liked it.

Anjali:Or her?

Arnav was embarrassed:Di..don't have any false ideas.

Arnav decided to go through the back door.While moving through the corridor to the steps leading to the back door,he heard Khushi talking to someone.He listened.He understood that she was speaking to someone in mobile.

Khushi: Yes..I know...but I can't..never...I know that both of you are sad..but I can't...please try to understand me...It's not that I don't wish...no..She cut the phone.

Arnav slowly came down through the steps.He saw Khushi sitting on a small cushioned chair a little away from the steps.The lights were dim but he saw her wiping the tears from her cheeks.He stood there looking at her.Suddenly she became aware of somebody watching .She looked up and saw him standing on the steps.She stared at him and could not control her tears and she turned around and left.

Arnav was disturbed and was eager to find out the reason for her sadness.Aman found him absent minded throughout dinner.

Aman:Arnav,you are not your usual self now a days.What is wrong with you?

Arnav:Nothing..I'll tell you later.

Khushi was given materials by Arnav and she started her work at AR office. Latest machines were given to her.One week passed by.She saw how the staff was afraid of him.He was never angry with her but she was afraid of him.

One day Arnav found her working even after the working hours. She was trying a new design. It started to rain heavily and Aakash and Aman were out of station.Raj was with the auditor throughout the day.Arnav watched her slim figure .The purple colour saree was matching her skin.She wore a matching earring.Her hair was plaited.He very much wanted to see it open.The low cut blouse clearly revealed her beautiful neck.Arnav watched her intently.She looked beautiful.His heart began to beat faster.They were alone in that big office.

Arnav thought:No...I should behave normally..I can't embarrass her. He called:Khushi...

She suddenly looked up,then looked around.

Arnav:We're alone here.Is your work over?Shall we go home?

Khushi:I didn't know.My god...let's go.Then she exclaimed:Rain...?She was excited.

The security brought the car to where they were standing but before getting inside they got wet.Arnav asked her to put the seat belt but she couldn't.So he helped her to put it.While helping his face went very near to her.The smell of his perfume,the smell of his skin,his breathe on her face,the rainy night...increased her heartbeat.Arnav looked into her eyes while doing the seat belt.They were quiet during the drive.There was water logging all over the road and there was severe traffic block.Arnav saw Khushi resting her head on his shoulder and sleeping.He reached home.He called her thrice.She didn't respond. He undid the seat belt and while doing so he kissed her on the forehead and as he couldn't help himself he pressed his lips on hers lightly. He whispered:Sorry Khushi...He picked her in his arms and reached the front door.The security in the entrance pressed the bell and Anjali opened it.

Anjali:What happened chote?

Arnav:Nothing..she slept in the car.

Khushi opened her eyes and was totally embarrassed to find her in his arms.She got down.

Ankitha was very angry and said:How can you sleep like that?Didn't you know that he was carrying you?

Khushi:No..I was tired and slept..Sorry Arnav...Arnav ji...

For the first time he heard her calling his name.

Arnav had a sleepless night.Actually it was the beginning of his sleepless nights.

Riya came for the function.She was becoming cosy with Arnav.Khushi's concentration wavered and the hot tea fell on Arnav's hands.

Arnav stood near the open window looking at the sky.Khushi was standing nearby.He asked:What makes you happy?

She said:The happiness of the people I love

He asked again:What makes you sad?

She said:When we lose something very dear to us and realize that we'll never get it back...

They looked at each other.

It was Nani's 75^th birthday. The Raizada siblings decided to celebrate it in grandeur. Nani wanted it only as a simple function.But Arnav sent invitation to all the relatives and friends.Most of the relatives were in town for his cousin Jai's marriage.Riya was annoyed as she was not invited.But later she was also invited in order to avoid the nuisance of Ankitha. Ankitha,Arjun and their parents were in Jai's house for a few days.

Arnav purchased dress and ornaments for all. The sales person came home with varieties of dresses and ornaments. Khushi didn't show any interest.Anjali and Payal made her sit along with them.They tried different dresses and ornaments on them and Khushi. Arnav silently watched. They were trying a red saree on her. Arnav found it very matching to her.But she selected a simple one.

At night when she entered her room, she saw two packets on her bed.She opened it curiously.One was a red saree and other was a matching necklace.A note was attached."Hope you like it.If so, wear it.If you don't like it,ignore it."Arnav".

Khushi was in a dilemma what to do.

The day dawned.There was special pooja at home in the morning.Guests started to arrive for the evening function.The Raizada family witnessed the expertise of Khushi in handling the situation.She was helping Anjali along with the members of event management.Anjali and Nani exchanged glances .They were happy. Arnav ,Aakash,Aman and Raj were managing the male guests.

Arnav was observing her and found that she was too immersed in her work.He was thinking whether she will wear the saree given by him.

The Raizada ladies and Khushi went to their rooms for getting ready for the evening session.Khushi sat on the bed confused.She made up her mind and stood up.There was a knock on the door.She opened it.She saw Anjali and Payal standing outside.They got in and saw the beautiful red saree and the necklace lying on the bed.

Payal gasped:Khushi,It's beautiful..from where did you buy it?When?Why didn't you tell us?

Khushi was shocked and embarrassed.She didn't know what to say.But tried to find an answer.

She said: Payal..I ...you know Diya..my friend ..she gave it to me ..she came to meet me after your marriage..But I'm not going to wear it.

Payal:Why?You should wear it.

Anjali:Yes..you have to...and please keep your hair open..

Khushi:No..please di..

Anjali:Then we won't go from here.We'll sit here.

Khushi had to agree.

One hour later Anjali,Payal and Nani came to the living room .Everyone were admiring them.Arnav was impatiently waiting.A few minutes later there was a murmur among the guests,then there was silence.Someone asked:who is she?All looked up to the stairs.Arnav could not believe his eyes.He saw her slowly descending the stairs with grace.The red saree,the necklace,the open hair...She was looking extremely beautiful,ravishing.The hair was open which reached her hips.A few strands were on both sides of her forehead which made her more alluring.Arnav could not take his eyes from her.He was staring and staring.

Khushi's eyes were searching for him.She saw him standing among the guests staring at her.He looked extremely handsome in a blue suit.She suddenly had an urge to be beside him.The voice of Anjali and Payal brought her to sense.

Anjali shrieked:Khushi...marvellous..beautiful..she hugged khushi and introduced her to all the relatives.

He startled when he heard a voice beside him:"Arnav,I'm here.He saw Riya standing beside him.

Arnav was embarrassed.Riya was also staring at Khushi.She asked:Who is she?

Arnav:Eehh?Khushi..

Riya looked at her with jealousy.

Arnav wanted to see her very near.He stole looks at her.Nani was very angry to see Riya among the invitees.

The function started.Ankitha came forward and clutched on Arnav's hands.She remained with Arnav for a long time eventhough Arnav introduced Riya to her.Later Ankitha was very annoyed and angry and moved away.

Riya:Arnav,the girl is really a nuisance.

She dragged Arnav to a corner.Everyone was busy chatting.An elderly couple who was sitting together were asking for tea.Khushi took the tray arranged by Hariprakash and went near them.She heard Arnav calling her:Khushi..one tea for me.

Khushi stole glances at him and he was aware of it. She went near him. she took the tea cup and while she was going to hand over it to him,she saw Riya standing very close to him,her hands clutching his.She felt disturbed and sad.Her concentration wavered and the hot tea fell on his palm.Khushi was shocked.

Riya:You foolish girl,idiot..what are you doing?

The guests who were nearby were shocked at this unrefined response.Arnav was angry and he said:That was unfair and unjust.You are not supposed to talk to her like that.

Nani came to see what happened.

Arnav asked Riya to move away inorder to avoid unpleasant situation.Riya became very angry and left.Arnav didn't stop her.Arnav wiped his hand with tissue.

Khushi was in tears.She left the room.She went to the room where medicines and miscellaneous things were kept.He looked around and saw Aman and others enjoying and chatting.He followed her.He saw her in the room. .She was surprised to see him there.She said:Sorry.

Arnav was watching her.He thought:Mesmerising.He was dying to see her closely.

Khushi could not meet his gaze:She said:Let me apply this ointment.He moved forward and sat on a cushioned chair.She hesitated and sat down near him.He stretched his hand and bend down a little..She started to apply ointment with shaking hands.They didn't talk.He watched her intently.She slowly looked up.Their eyes met.They forgot the surroundings...It was a beautiful moment.He moved the strands of hair from her forehead. He cupped her face. She quivered at his touch.His head began to bend further.She clutched his hands.Their lips were very nearby.Arnav's mobile buzzed.Both of them came back to their senses.

Khushi and Arnav could not sleep that night.They behaved the next day as though nothing had happened.Khushi now decided to keep away from him.She was afraid of her feelings now..
