Chapter 7

The stage was covered with soft-colored curtains. The fresh flowers, the lights made up a perfect background for the engagement ceremony.

Taani walked around admiring the beautiful ensemble. Little did she know someone else was noticing a beautiful ensemble that was her.

She was wearing a peach colored silk lehenga with subtle embroidery. She had left her hair open, the soft curls touched the bare skin on her low back blouse. She had the slightest makeup on but she looked beautiful. Rey didn't even realize how long he just kept admiring her.

It wasn't just her beauty that had him mesmerized the way she smiled, greeted people just showed how genuine, kind and beautiful a person she was.

~~~~~~Flashback~~~~~~~~

Mrs Singhania: Rey told me you love baingan ka bharta. Isliye tumhare liye specially banaya maine.

Taani: (confused) Uh..oh..that's so sweet of you aunty. Thank you so much.

This was the first time Taani was meeting Rey's parents. His Dad couldn't make it because he suddenly had some work to attend. It was much later that she understood that was just an excuse he didn't really approve of her.

Taani gulped the first bite of food and sipped some water immediately. She kept repeating this act very often. This did not go unnoticed to both Rey and his Mother.

Mrs Singhania: Is everything alright Taani?

Taani: Yes, aunty, I was just a little thirsty. The food is amazing. Now I know Rey wasn't exaggerating when he praised your cooking.

Mrs Singhania: I am pretty sure he must have exaggerated a bit. He always does that with me.

Rey: No I do not. You don't know how amazing you are and I think it's about time you do.

They chatted for a long time. Taani was able to finish off her food. She seemed odd at the beginning but they bought her explanation of being thirsty because she looked alright later.

As he walked her out he asked.

Rey: Taani are you sure baigan ka bharta is your favorite dish...you seemed a little uncomfortable eating it.

Taani: How did you know that's my favorite dish

Rey: You told me.

Taani: I told you??

Rey: Yea...myself you and Rishi were talking and you said that's your favorite dish.

Taani: (laughing) Oh I remember now. That was Rishi who said that and he was being sarcastic...I hate baingan.

Rey: No way...why didn't you tell me that.

Taani: I didn't know you took t for real.

Rey: I am really sorry...that's why you were literally swallowing it isn't it.

Taani: Well it tasted amazing I am not even lying but I don't know..I have always not enjoyed eating baigan. I didn't want to upset your Mom...she had put so much effort in it.

Rey: You should have still said something my Mom wouldn't have mind.

Taani: That's fine Rey..not that big a deal...plus at the end of it I actually enjoyed eat.

Rey: You are lying aren't you?

Taani: Yea kind of...

They shared a laugh

Rishi: Rey..Rey!!!

Rey: Huh? (coming out of his thoughts)

Rishi: Kya soch kya rahe ho itna..

Rey: Nothing...kya hua?

Rishi: Kya hua matlab...main dulha hain aur yaha mujhe logon ke peecha padna pad raha hain...why aren't you ready dude...everybody will he here in about half an hour.

Rey: Oh..don't worry it won't take long. I will be back in minutes.

Rishi: Okay then leave.

Rey was about to leave when Khanak came there.

She was wearing a lavender colored saree lehenga with off-white pearls. The gap between her blouse and lehenga was just enough to draw attention to her perfect waist to hip ratio. She was dressed to kill and her beautiful big almond eyes were just the perfect addition.

Khanak: Reyansh Singhania...don't tell me this is what you plan to wear at the ceremony..We have to look better than them...ye pehena hain tumne..

Rey was in jeans and a t shirt.

Rey: I am yet to get ready Madam.

Khanak: Toh kiss mahurat ki wait kar rahe ho...go look better.

Rey: I was about to leave but you stopped me.

Khanak: Am I stopping you now? You aren't you leaving?

Rey: Ja raha hoon maate...(he took a step ahead and stepped back) You look good btw..(smiling)

Khanak: Dhanyawaad (smiling back at him)

Rey left

Khanak: And the groom looks better than ever..

Rishi: I am really nervous. I hope everything goes well...

Khanak: Don't worry about that everything will be fine. The only thing we should worry about is looking better than them...except for Damini ofcourse...

Rishi: You are totally mad..I am out of here

Khanak: Aree..why is everyone calling me mad...Weddings are a showdown between the bride and groom's and I want us to win..

Shaan walked out wearing black pants white shirt and black blazer. He had his hair lightly gelled with a few strands lingering on his forehead. This guy was effortlessly good looking; his lean toned abs were an extra. And his dimples could make most girls fall for him.

As Taani stood beside him looking perfect herself. Both of them could easily pass off as the best looking couple in the room. They got a lot of compliments about it as well. The huge rock on her fingers was hard to miss.

The bride and groom exchanged rings, claps and hugs followed.

Khanak stood in front of the cake pieces thinking as Taani walked besides her.

Taani: (grabbing a piece for herself) Kya hua..soch kya rahi hon?

Khanak: I am thinking whether to eat the cake or not..I gain weight really quick.

Taani: Don't worry...thode extra crunches kar lena...you need to have some to celebrate our victory at least...we killed with our appearances.

Khanak: (laughing) We sure did..having Rey on our side helped a lot I must say ( she said as they both looked across the room at him as he chatted away with a female who looked extremely smitten by him) Half of the girls in the room are gasping at his looks. He does look hot in that tux I must say.

Taani got a tad jealous seeing her call Rey hot. As is she felt it was only her right to call him that or feel like that for him.

Khanak: Okay I think I am going to eat the cake..I do a few extra crunches..

Khanak left and Taani still kept looking at Rey and the girl talking to him. She constantly touched his arm as they chatted away. Taani was getting furious seeing that.

Touching his arm she said I can say you work out..I love men who pay attention to themselves.'

Taani: (Walking up to them and standing beside Rey) Sorry darling..he is taken

Lady: Oh then excuse me...I didn't know and your guy didn't bother to mention it either.

Taani: Well I am mentioning it now so..thank you (looking back at Rey) main 2 minute ke liye kahi chali kya gayi tum dusre ladkiyon se flirt karne lage.

Rey: Main flirt nahi kar raha tha...who ka rahi thi

Taani: Tum rok bhi toh nahi rahe the..

Rey: Who toh main dekh raha tha ki tum kaise react karogi...you were savage girl.

Taani: Oh shut up...bolte kyu nahi attention enjoy kar rahe the..

Rey: Bolunga toh tum jaan na le logi meri..

Taani: What?? You jerk don't talk to me

Rey: Ok sorry sorry...aaj ke baad main kisi bhi ladki ko apne aap se flirt nahi karne dunge..(pausing) tumhare saamne.

Taani: Get lost.

Rey: I am just kiddin Taani...aree liten ti me

He ran behind an acting upset Taani

Taani walked up to Rey and the girl talking to him

Taani: Hey Natasha? Are you Natasha...

Girl: I am sorry you got the wrong person..Main Natasha nahi hoon..I am Preeti..

Taani: Oh Preeti..ya Preeti...I am sorry I am bad with names ...tumhe Damini ki mummyji bula rahi hain..she tried calling you out but then she was called by someone else so asked me..

Girl: Okay...I will go ask..thank you very much...And I will see you later handsome..

Rey: Sure (faking a smile)

Rey: Kya sachem use bula rahe the? (Questioning her)

Taani: Of course...why would I lie.. (stating confidently)

Rey: I don't know...you.

Taani: Okay..I don't have time for this now..bye

As she turned around to leave..he called her out..

Rey: Taani..

She stopped but didn't turn.

Rey: You are looking beautiful.

Her heart smiled. Many people had complimented her this evening. But she was upset that he would not get to hear it from him. But him saying it made her heart flutter.

Taani: Thank you

She left.

Shaan: My God I am tired. Why do our ceremonies have to be so long? (He said as he took a sip from his glass of scotch)

Rishi: Bachu don't cry about it..you have to go through it again soon..

Shaan: And you know Mom..she is planning the grandest wedding ever. I apologize if I turn you into a window the same day you become my wife because I am going to die. (He took one more sip out of his drink)

Taani: (rubbing his arm) You will be just fine...relax.

Khanak: I love weddings...its so much fun

Rey: You like them only because you get to dress up..You nearly insulted me earlier today...what if that was my final attire...I would have felt so bad.

Khanak: If that was your final attire I would have ripped your clothes.

Rey: Oh really? (Flirtatiously)

Khanak: Oh comeone..didn't you enjoy your fair share of flirting this evening...All the women were going ga ga over you..

Rey: Well none of them were you..

Khanak: Oh I see..thank you then..

Rey: You're welcome.

Taani got up to leave.

Taani: I am going to go sleep...it's been a long day.

She was leaving partly because she was tired and partly because she was getting uncomfortable with the exchanges between Khanak and Rey

Shaan: I will see if you in a few minutes. (He said pointing at the unfinished drink in his hand)

Taani: It's ok..I think I will crash in my bed as soon as I can..

Shaan: Okay..good night..

Taani: Good night...good night everyone.

Khanak: It has actually been a long day..I think I am going to take off as well...Good night everyone

It was few minutes later that Rey left as well.

Rishi: You guys seems pretty comfortable with each other now.

Shaan: Who?

Rishi: You and Rey who else..

Shaan: Oh yea..were once best of friends..I don't know how things got so complicated but it's all not so bad.

Rishi: Shaan...can I ask you something..

Shaan: I think I know what you are going to ask ..but sure..

Rishi: I know Taani is marrying you because you guys are friends already..and you know the history and everything and all of it...but why did you agree..I mean it's clear she still has feelings for him..they will never get together I know..but she might always have something for him. And don't you want to be with someone who you really love and get it back the same way. Doesn't that bother you?

Shaan: I have had my fair share of relationships to conclude that love is overrated my friend. You get to know a person for some time you start loving them. You don't be around them and you will get over it simple. I do love Taani..enough to be her friend...enough to be her husband and enough to let her go if she wants to.

Rishi: And what if you start falling for someone enough to want Taani go?

Shaan: I will never leave her alone.

Rishi: I know you wouldn't. But then there will be two of you unhappy instead of just her. Have a good night.
