How many times had she dreamt of, imagined, and spoken about hitting him whole heartedly, and heavy handedly with her beloved Chandni and Chameli for multiple reasons?
How many times had she threatened him as a way out of listening to his harsh criticisms of her?
And yet, her heart almost stopped at the gut-wrenching pain of his family when he was supposedly not going to come back home, ever.
She prayed to the God she barely believed in to bring him back safe, sound, and most importantly, completely unharmed.
'uss sab ka koi matlab nahi tha'
says she about the night that registered consciously in her mind. She saw colours not just in his eyes, but also in him: he was not a boring man, just a rigidly coiled one.
Seeing him unfurl different shades, she was forced to admit today that he was not pakau.
Not even a little bit. Not at all.
Sharing a sweet memory with people perhaps brings them closer to us.Or maybe, she knew when she looked at him that the changes she was going through, he felt them too. In that short distance between then and now lay trust, concern, and unexpressed, barely understood intense emotions.
He will not be the protective kind of person who will not give her a chance to prove her bravery and strength, both mental and physical. They would do this, together.
And then, he was hit. On the head. With a stick.
She felt rather than heard him scream as he knelt down, his head reeling with pain. And she said she could not leave him alone like this: Unprotected, vulnerable, alone.
She would not abandon him, not for a moment.
And yet, he trusted her to, he needed her to.
Because they do not belong to each other. They belong to their families, one of which needed her to leave him.
He could not afford to let them both get weak.
Perhaps it was the urgency in his voice that demanded she leave him be. She understood what was unsaid: I'll be fine. That is more important for me than my pain.
She understood perhaps in the same moment what it meant for her: Their pain did not matter. Family came first, and he trusted her to carry out his, their responsibility when he could not.
Equal partners in crime-solving, as equal partners in life.
